Mozilla has a very nice feature that MS never thought of. When you rotate the mouse wheel the window that the mouse is currently hovering over scrolls. This is clearly the right way to do it. In normal Windows apps, it's the Window that has keyboard focus that scrolls.

This to me seems to be a much worse taboo, but maybe it's just because I'm old fashioned (or not Japanese). I mean don't they think the person on the other end is a bit put off by the strange noises? TW was bought partially as stock swap, which forced a valuation of both TW and AOL at the time. It's now worth less, and they declare the amount $80 billion less. In the same way you can say Intel shares were going for around $70 in 2001 and now for about $15, that's a drop in value of $365 billion. So saying AOL lost $100 billion as if that was any real loss, that's a bit misleading. I'm taking some of these figures off the top of my head, so forgive me if they're a bit off, but I think you get the picture.

  10. "Huge losses" - accounting bullshit on Mozilla, Gecko, Netscape, And Their Future At AOL · · Score: 3, Interesting

AOL lost no money in 2002. In fact they made $7 billion. These "news reports" are journalists misleading their readers again because having a headline "AOL looses $100 billion" sounds cool and sells copy. In fact, the "loss" refers to the fact that AOL Time Warner is worth less than when they were valued at the time of the merger. Amazing news! Imagine a company worth less now than at the peak of the dot-com bubble!

Software development should get more and more productive as developers take advantage of class libraries, frameworks, and third party components, unfortunately due to political decisions in various companies things aren't improving as fast as they should be (at least in the Windows world). I see a lot of companies stopping development of the GUI side of things, because they have become "unfashionable". For instance, Stingray no longer make newer versions of their Objective grid product, even though there is a lot of new features that could be added to it. Also, in the latest version of Visual studio, Microsoft has decided to discontinue the MFC framework (I mean no new features will be added, it's still supported as regards bugs). In fact the MFC framework has seen scarce improvements improved since VC 4.2 (at least regarding GUI stuff, like components and doc/view architecture). Even where Microsoft add new components , they often are awkward distribution restrictions like dependency on IE.
