    Already is.

    I'm sorry that i can';t find the link (how dare you state something without a link) but some people have already made something like that. It's even niftier than you imagine now.

    They build a submersible that uses the flow of water as it sinks to propel itself. The difference in water temperature is then used to generate energy. At the bottom, the proces is reversed, again gaining momentum and energy as it raises!

    At the surface it then sends out the research data aquired sofar, and sinks again. Till the end of days.

    Reading some of the commentairies I get the fealing not everybody graps the full level of the achievements made here.

    Imagine having to make / design one of these suckers yourself!

    what do you need:

    Plane (duh)
    Controls: GPS, computer, satelite link!, electric controls + receiver, battery etc
    fuel!!!: lots of it. its only like 3000 miles or so. (40 hours of flying)

    now fit it within these specs to be able to call it a "model airplane":
    max 5 kg
    max size 2x2 meter
    max engine cap. 0.6c
    (there are several more limitations)

    Hope every one graps the achievement here.

    regarding Q3:

    back in the old days (before my time) you had those modems on which you could place the horn of the phone.

    I `don't know how much of the speed achieved in those days was limited by modem technology and phone line quality, but you should be able to get a half decent speed using a modern modem and "speeking" directly into the horn.

    actally, some of that half could be equally dumb.

    But i agree on using the median and not the average.

    Unfortunately,

    whenever you respond, the spammer gets more money, since the "response rate" will rise, and yur e-mail address will be marked as "active".

    compagnies should see that this kind of advertising will not result in any actual orders made.
    but since the cost of spam is for the recipient, selling one viagra pill is likely to make break-even.

    Flooding the compagny with fake orders would:

    a. be illegal
    b. could cause some innocent bloke to receive a package causing him to have to explain alot to his girlfriend.
    c. i'm not willing to even read all the vulgarities in the spam to get to the part of "how to order".

    just get me an easy to set up filter, for free, with 99.9% accuracy, deleting the suff before i have to see it.

    the resulting "weapons race" between spammers and spammies will result in such cost and effort on the side of the spammer, that by the time he/she is smart enough to get through all the filters, he/she is smart enough to get a real job. Hence, the cost of hiring him/her is so high, the market for spamming wil reduce

    Yes margret, we're here in the basement of one of our nations largest ISP's, are we're looking on the screen.

    As you can see, most spam will be concentrated in the north-west, and will slowly decent into the more southern regions of the nation. We can expect particulary heavy downfall of explicit spam, so parents, keep your children away from their mailboxes tomorrow!

    As for the rest of the week, I am sad to say that it doesnt look good. we're likely to see a further increase, as we have seen in the last 5 years in a row now.

    beside's the usual answer: "because i can do it !"

    He still needs a backback to bring along his keyboard, mouse and monitor. Plus 500 meters of power cable so he can sit in the park and eat his lunch (from his other lunchbox) and type some letter.

    and with these specs? get a laptop.
    But i like the whole idea of very small but complete boards. Nice hack.

    Not everyone has a PC.

    But everybody, and i mean really everybody, has an "health"

    "health" by definition is never 100%
    (it only is in Doom and Quake! the first 10 seconds)

    I really like the picture on the sites frontpage.
    i can imagine the small size of the Shuttles being an advantage, not to mention the "coolness" factor looking at it. (i assume the "cool" in the intro refers to emotion and not teperature!!)

    But getting computation done cheap is no longer the challenge. It's getting the data from one node to the other. They still need "custom" expensive equipment for this.

    I see they use 3com gigabit ethernet. having this 300+ gigabit switch capability is not "cheap".

    Until one can buy this kind of networking equipment for really cheap, we shouldn't mention things like "of the shelve Beowulf super computer in the top 100".

    Speed is not always of the essence.

    Today on discovery channel europe was doc. about the antonov 225. worlds largest cargo plane. consumed more than a 1000 liters of fuel per hour!!!

    moving a lot of heavy things with less fuel can be very interesting whilst the entire oil producing (read arabic) world hates you.

    Maybe somebody has already posted this idea as a project on sourceforge..

    There have been too many of these incidents lately, and it's giving OSS a bad odor. We must be carefull. Telling the rest of the world closed binaries are infected often as well does not help. The damage is already done.

    This is my idea to prevent most of these jokers tricks.

    In stead of placing the checksums next to the source on the same server we nead to place it some where safe. A number of centralized servers with a sole purpose to serve these sums, in several locations, on preferably differend operating systems. This combined with the use of eg PGP.

    All distro's, for those who have not already, must apply a simple program ala portage and apt that checks against multiple PGP-key servers before the build commenses.

    Now, how to make sure the admin of the project is the one signing the source on his machine.............

    For all we know,

    maybe Microsoft (or some other big/ritch compagny with anti-OSS feelings) has a "special ops" group somewhere out there, with a sole mission:

    "Make OSS-software look more vulnerable than closed source."

    But let's not get paranoid....

    As far as i know methanol is a very popular "gasoline" in Brazil. All those beetles run on it!

    Using bio-mass, be it seeds, manure or plant rests, is nothing new.

    We even had a robot using bio mass as a source for electricity yesterday !!

    So fly a plane with it, wow!! just like those little remote controlled airoplanes.

    Post a new story when it runs on water.......

    Depends on how "closed"do you want you're machine to be.

    What kind of people will be using them? the guy who wrote the slapper worm while he is in jail, college students, or members of staff who you can slap on the wrist???

    the point is:

    any machine you can fysically access can be tampered with. period. If you make it a thin client you'll still be able to remove the bootP, put in a harddisk and make it your own.

    So de level of security and effort you put into this depends more on the public thats going to use them than on the distribution you use.

    thin clients are very easy to maintain, have few rotating parts, are not very attractive for theft and can be replaced pretty quick.

    Your arguement concerning the system your grandmother can use makes me think.

    yep, elderly can be taught to use a KDE/Gnome desktop with ease.

    But more importantly, after seeing my father mess up his win95 in such a way i have to reinstall the whole bunch again and again, (no hd space or cdrw for image tricks or a more modern win variant, before you flame), i want the rights management of a modern OS.

    So why don't i see OSS desktops in public use? it should be so easy to set up, and maintain them.

    In the hospital i work at, some manager thought it was a good thing to make internet available for the visitors. So, 5 pc's later, all with expensive TFT screens, 256MB, 40Gb HD, etc etc and: Win98 ! (yes we still use 95 and 98) So, within a week, the nightlock never opened again. (and thats already > 1 year ago!) Too expensive to maintain.

    The thing is, for a long while software develpment, hardware dev, and the increase in processing power needed for functions we want was pretty much in balance.

    a new game came out, and you thought:"i should upgrade". NOt just because of this game, but you knew also for a whole bunch of others games and applications. even for that new Win95 OS everbody was talking about.

    Then games were getting faster thanx to GPU's and not the CPU. Office apps were pretty much complete. (No CPU eating functions after real time spell checks.) And browsers are waiting for the data to come through the line, in stead of the data waiting in the cache to be parsed.

    above is 99% of the market.

    All i see now that needs the ultimate systems is sience and video editing. None of my friends even owns a video camera! Mom is no where near the need to run large neural net progs to estimate the best oven temperature for her diamond shaped cake.

    But: ripping DVD could be the next CPU development stimulator! We should make it legal ;-)
