"Still More Tension Between The RIAA And Everyone Else"
These guys won't be satisfied until they are back to being the sole distributor of content, bar none. Now, that doesn't mean that they would like to actually own and operation satellite radio and music download sites, and all the other latest technology-driven distribution methods. That would still be arrogantly monopolistic but at least it would show some progressive thinking. Nope, they aren't that smart: the only solution that is valid in their limited worldview is to eliminate such channels entirely and send us back to the days of shiny plastic discs.
You only need to lose a right once before it ceases to be a right.
A right that can be lost or removed simply because it is inconvenient to some group or organization isn't really a right. The problem is that many of our long-established "rights" are in the process of, or have already been, redefined as privileges. And privileges can be revoked.
The fact that such redefinition is illegal under the Constitution doesn't seem to bother too many people in our various governments, which is troublesome. Doesn't seem to bother many of us ordinary citizens either, which I find even more disturbing.
I suppose it depends upon your definition of the term "closed system". The Earth is "closed" from a biological standpoint (mysterious red rains in India notwithstanding) but given that the energy that drives our ecology is largely supplied by the Sun, the system as a whole is open.

Yeah. And it would help if he would declare a War on Bugs while he's at it.

Please... this is con artistry, or at best fringe science. Combination of both, probably.

But frankly, if what Google keeps track of doesn't bother you enough to stop using it, then this shouldn't bother you either.
There have always been two basic forms of government: ones in which everything is forbidden except that which is permitted, and those where everything is permitted except that which is forbidden. Totalitarian states such as Russia and China are examples of the first... the United States was, by design, an example of the latter. That may not last much longer: at the rate we're going in twenty years or so the United States may be indistinguishable, governmentally speaking, from any other fascist state. Some would say we're already there, and in many respects we are.
Don't leave Ballmer out of this. Save a cartridge for him: any number of Slashdotters would be willing to provide a spare bullet... maybe even two (you know, just to be sure.) Although, now that I think about it, I'm not entirely sure that a wooden stake wouldn't be more appropriate.
Yeah, no shit. People talk about how Bit Torrent downloads are consuming some large percentage of the Internet capacity... but it's also consuming a larger portion of user's hard drives. All RIAA/MPAA bitching aside, downloading is driving the sale of a lot of storage hardware. It's even worse if (like me) you're a packrat and just hate to throw anything away. So, you don't... you just buy a couple more hard disks and jack them into your RAID array.
Not entirely true... you can use a utility such as XPlite and strip out a lot of crap. But it's just not the same as something like Linux, since no matter what you're left with the GUI.
No doubt you're right but one can always hope. Actually, as the gene pool continues to degrade and as average intelligence continues to drop, at some point people won't even be able to figure out how to have sex. The question is whether that point will be reached before or after the fall of civilization.
I dunno... but it fits in a thimble. I think a guy named Kimball invented the nimble gymbal that fits in a thimble, and I believe he lives on the ice shelf Fimbul and plays the cymbal.

News for Nerds. Stuff that's dark.
I stop reading when I encounter any variant of the word "empower".

Yes, they have a device which can store large quantities of plant seeds ... oh, sorry, that was the Flax capacitor. My mistake.

I prefer Personal Area Network (PAN), myself.
Does this mean that a man with erectile dysfunction might be implanted with a peter PAN?
