and yes, it's good to be annoying when it comes to frivolities like TV. I wish more people were annoying in regards to frivolities.
Not to say that violence is good, but it is annoying people that become the target of rage more often that others. So go ahead and enforce your judgments on others. Just don't be surprised when someone does the same to you. It won't be right, but it may be painful.
As far as the software is concerned, any FTP server. However, we offer the service to some clients. Uploads are logged. Directories are backed up. The client does not have overwrite or delete access. What you get here is not fact, but preponderance of the evidence. This picture matches this picture, and I had custody and control of my data.
Mind you, you're talking to a sworn law enforcment officer (yes....really. My part time job is as fire marshal of a small town).
Yes, these things vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction....even judge to judge. But some basic structure remains - most times electronic evidence will not be held with the same level of credibility unless 1.) it is reasonably protected from tampering or 2.) someone is sitting in the court room that can say "Yes, your honor, this IS an accurate representation of what I saw." (which is why I can use a regular old DSLR for documenting scenes - I'm in court to say that I took the picture and that it accurately represents what I found)
And point 1 is satisfied by logs on both the DVR and the FTP server that match time, and image. Often, point 2 can be satisfied by the client watching, or someone remote watching as well. But no system is perfect. A good lawyer can even discredit an eye witness with a movie camera. You do what you can, and cross your fingers.
Too bad that you need one of those lossy, proprietary compressed schemes to be considered evidenciary (as many of those attempt to proove the image hasn't been manipulated).
Varies by location, and there are other ways to preserve chain of custody. You can upload events as they happen to a 3rd party for example. And ZoneMinder does support this.
It is an open (If not free and open) standard, and less lossy than some of the proprietary crap out there. Even less lossy than mpeg. And it is viewable on almost any system, unlike some stuff on other DVRs.

In the spirit of FOSS, http://www.zoneminder.com/ is a Linux based network camera system with built in motion detection. Works very well, and saves images a jpeg, not a proprietary lossy compressed stream.
When you find something work related at youtube, send a link to your boss. Do this often when you work from home. As management makes a business case for it, it will happen.
Since there is no fraud being committed here as far as I can tell, I'm guessing there actually is no crime being committed here...at least in the US?
How about Defamation of character? By using her name, they are disparaging her character, as evidenced by the death threats. Her damages are time and trouble fielding the calls, and metal anguish. Fairly clear case once you identify them.
Traditional peak power hours -- the time during the day when power demand shoots up -- run from 4 pm to 7 pm when air conditioning begins to ramp up
But what about those of us who DON'T live in Texas? I only use my air conditioning 3-4 months a year, and not consistantly then. I haven't had it on for weeks; I ran the (gas) furnace this morning.
Gee... I read that and thought "They must NOT live in Texas. In the summer, my AC runs all day and all night... And 85 degree low means no AC surge at all!
As to "Green Computing" it is mostly just marketing. When it comes down to it, people still buy on performance and price. Green only makes a difference if it is free...
And when the government makes a bad decision, can I fork my government? Of course, no government is all that bad if you can just opt out. Not that effective either...
I see no bumpers or anything resembling a crumple zone that makes common collisions significantly safer in modern vehicles. This car could easily wedge itself under the back of a truck, decapitating the passengers for instance.
I would much rather drive a lightweight compact car, making 50-60MPG highway than risk being killed in such a contraption.
Next time read... It has a space frame, and the entire front end is a boxed in crumple zone designed to go under the car lifting it over the impact. It also has a space frame enclosing the cabin with a ton of airbags. It actually looks to be considerably safer than most of the under $20k econobox set.
But I can't have one. Air conditioning in Houston is Not and option in my car! And the concept of A/C for them is a solar powered exhaust fan? No thanks...
The only thing the motorcycle has going for it is the small size which might let you avoid something without having to move as much. That doesn't mean it's more maneuverable though.
It sure has an edge in blind spots! And being able to fit in small escape holes sure helps... Not to mention that motorcycles drivers generally drive further ahead than car drivers. (At least the ones that ride a while) Lastly, I have never see a cyclist riding while; eating, talking on a non-hands-free cell, texting, using a laptop, reading the paper, or beating his (her) kids. That should stop a bunch right there!
Pit this versus a full size truck or even a semi and it has little chance.
And what small economy car do you want to drive head-on into a semi? Frankly, unless it is another semi, you are going to have a very bad day... And even if it is another semi, the day won't be good.
The problem in making a good survival horror game is that people just aren't scared anymore. We are used to movies with blood everywhere and body parts flying in every direction. Mix that in with the current technology of load times and lag and a survival horror game just isn't going to work. Granted, you can make a fairly good and creepy game, but the tactics that worked in the past aren't going to work today.
But that isn't scary, just nasty... Some of the scariest movies of my life had little or no gore. Now that have traded dread for surprise and shock. I wild love to have some good old fashioned Dread back. This might be it. I just hope the DRM is not the scary part of the game!
How much farther down this rabbit hole must we go before government whistle blowers become folk heroes? Will our grandchildren hear stories of Babe the blue ox, superman, and joe whistleblower? I hope so.
I hope not! That means that whistle blowers are so rare that they must be celebrated. I hope they are more common than bus drivers.
Dear Mr. Blizzard Folks,
The last 5 software titles I have purchased have had native Linux clients. Only 1 had real support, (which I never used) and 2 came from iD software. I just don't really buy Windows software much anymore. I have very fond memories of Diablo 1 and 2, but no plans for 3 at this time. A linux client would change that.
The process, which used to be considered too energy inefficient, uses a multi-step, low pressure, and low temperature biocatalyst to break the CO2 into 'basic hydrocarbon building blocks.
1) Grow a plant.
2) Stick in the ground for a few thousand years.
3) Dig up resultant black goo.
4) Distill goo into reactive liquid and distribute...
How is this new? When did it become more efficient?

Try http://www.zoneminder.com/ which hits everything you mentioned. (If the webcam is Linux supported)

Or at least embarrassed in the locker room...
Not the games as much as the equipment to play them on. PC games need a grand for the computer. Consoles want a HDTV. None of that comes cheap.
I guess you are one of the married ones... :)

I thought one of the great advantages of LCD and plasma displays was their power efficiency over good old-fashioned CRTs. Was that a fib?
I bet a 56 inch CRT would dim the lights of a few homes...

I stopped playing Doom 3 when I realized that I had developed an instinctual tick of turning around and firing every time the lights went out.
All the time, or only in Doom? Remind me not to follow you at night...

I think mine was the Linux question... http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=987005&cid=25276819 :) Anyway;

I was told that to really appreciate music, you have to get inside the head of the musician. This wins...

Remember, remember, the games of November... :) I like it!
