This is not the MEGATON announcement as Nintendo of Europe recently confirmed that there was never planned to be a MEGATON announcement. This is just Nintendo letting the news trickle in.

Take a look at their schedule for the next year and it almost looks blank. They don't want the attention drawn away from the two big games (Zelda and Metroid) that they've released.

Now we're starting to get the news from them in the form of confirmation of Animal Crossing 2, 100 Marios and Pikmin 2, the announcement of Pokemon Gamecube which is due out before the summer, and now the new GBA which was up until this point just a rumor.

I've never actually played either one, but Superman is known for its craptitude and I always remember the story of the friend who bought Lemmings Paintball without the manual and when checking the ingame help files, it gave him the message "Put the Help Files here Mr. Helpfile Man".

Not only did it show how unfinished the game was, but I know I'd be embarassed if I ever wrote a message like that and someone got to read it.

Mario Sunshine is an excellent platformer (as in the best this year had to offer), but people were hoping for so much more (though noone knew what else to expect). It's a great game, but it's no Mario 64 (or it is, but it's not what Mario 64 was when it was introduced).

As for Halo, it was technically rereleased this year so could potentially qualify, but against the shock/fun factor and variety of GTA: Vice City or the experience that is Metroid Prime, Halo doesn't really hold up. Especially with no official online multiplayer.

The reason why it's got so many people playing online is because up until the last few weeks, Xboxers didn't have a lot of good stuff to choose from online.

  6. Re:As a Be advocate of sorts, on What MorphOS Is All About · · Score: 1

While I'd love a usable version of Be to use, I've got to say that this is a completely different situation due to the competition aspect.

BeOS was in direct competition from the very beginning with Apple. When Apple changed up to the G3, they decided that they'd had enough of the competition and decided to not give Be the hardware information that they'd need to keep going. Considering it only originally ran on Apple machines, you're talking a niche market within a niche that was eventually actively opposed by their hardware maker. They stood no chance.

So Be moved ot the x86 market which was already locked up. People had too many choices. They could run Windows and get all the programs they wanted or they could run Linux who is selling their product for free and has rabid fan support. Take into account that they couldn't even give it away by preinstalling on the major computer retailers due to insane Microsoft licensing and they had no chance on that platform.

It's been a long time since I've run Be on my Powermac 7600/132 and I still think it was well ahead of its time (actually, I think the Powermac version is still ahead of anything available today). But Morph isn't exactly trying this. They're breaking into the non-apple PPC market which doesn't have a clear ruling OS. Yes, the actual Amiga OS could ruin it fairly quickly. But from what I've read, it can exist on hardware that isn't automatically intertwined with an OS. That stops it from needing to start over and hopefully will keep it building up rather than having to do a restart like BeOS v3.0 for PC which was a disaster.

I don't know how anyone else views this, but to nearly anyone who's had any experience, a statement like this sounds more like "I'm trying to find something wrong with it". The average user doesn't notice the heat buildup (and I know I've never noticed any heat buildup on my ReplayTV 4000). And his wife can't understand it? Can his wife understand the TV Guide? Yes, I realize that opening a PS2 is different from opening a PC, but the fact remains that it's not remotely difficult. And considering how much wiring the average person has to do to get a signal from their PC to their TV, this is a very useful product.

I however haven't checked the website yet on the one item that killed the Dreamcasts Divx player: reencoding. I know for formatting purposes, Divx needed to be reencoded to play it on the dreamcast. Usually that was time consuming and a general pain. Anyone know if this one needs that too?

  10. Re:What can come of this? on Square To Merge With Enix · · Score: 1

The Spirits Within wasn't a "huge mistake" because it had nothing to do with Final Fantasy, nor was it a mistake because of the failure of video game movies to date.

As was mentioned above, none of the Final Fantasies have anything to do with each other with the notable exception of them always having a character named Cid (which they had in the movie).

Second, video game movies aren't always terrible. Yes, Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat 2 were terrible movies. But Mortal Kombat (which had been released before the Spirits Within), Resident Evil (which had not), and even Tomb Raider (which was released at the same time) are all watchable "popcorn" movies.

Unfortunately, this is where the flaw came in. I just described these movies as Popcorn movies. As in movies that anyone can go to see, see a favorite property brought to the big screen, and hopefully walk away happy. The Spirits Within was /waaaaaay/ too high brow for the average person to enjoy. You had to 1) appreciate the art and 2) digest the thick and less than sexy/exciting plot. It never had a chance.

If you asked a comic book nerd 10 years ago what was the best Marvel comic based movie that they'd ever seen, if they were well informed, they'd say "Howard the Duck". More likely, they'd tell you there was no such thing. Even if video game movies are generally poor, it doesn't immediately condemn them to the realm of automatically terrible.

As for Square getting sloppy, Kingdom Hearts is regarded as one of the best games of the year by many (a poll on Gamefaqs.com just a few days ago put it at third behind Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Metroid Prime). I thought Kingdom Hearts was unpolished on a lot of points, but there was fun in there too. And that's what they were aiming for.

Lastly, it shouldn't be a suprise that they're doing special editions of their games. Square needs the money. It's one of the reasons they're making games for the GBA and Gamecube. Both sides swallowed their pride and so now Square is allowed to make some games for the Gameboy Advance in exchange for some Gamecube support. Square makes money. Starts to pull themselves out of the hole. If they need to get out faster, they just release some special editions of their better selling games and *BOOM* instant money. They have a large fanbase and they're using that (because they're smart) to their advantage.

Then you have to factor in that I don't travel much and a large portion of the GBA's better games are RPGs and you realize why I've only finished a grand total of one of my GBA games.

A big screen would make these games playable without the eye strain. That's what makes this thing worthwhile. On a normal sized screen I could actually play through games like Golden Sun or Castlevania: Circle of the Moon.

The theatrical version had the interference of the studios and five (FIVE!!!?!?!?!?!) unrelated editors. The editors literally pulled setups to jokes out of the movie and left the punchlines at times. The fight scenes seem to be cut of the most exciting and interesting frames (why cut 1.5 seconds when someone's being kicked?). On second thought, these Highlander editors are pretty bad to start.
