I must agree, and add to it that if you haven't read the Three musketeers since High School or before, YOU MUST READ THEM AGAIN. Oddly enough, I actually enjoyed the recent Dicapprio Man in the iron mask, after having re-read Dumas.
Ok, Despite your critique, Rand is a must read. Along with Heinlein, Rand demonstrates what most people do not fully comprehend, that someone who is an anarchist may not be anti government, or even anti Order.
Also, on Rand, Like Tolkein there are parts(the sermons for Rand and the poetry for Tolkein) that can be skipped without making the story incomprehensible or confusing.
I loved the ending of the death gate, although as I recall the fifth and sixth books sucked fairly hard, they can't be skipped or you will get lost in the labyrinth.:) Very much like donaldson in that even the Hero isn't that much of a nice guy/girl. SO it relates more closely to "real life" than fantasy with "good" heros.
I think the big problem with the Gap series was the complete and total lack of a hero, heroine, or even someone you could like just a little bit. But I actually liked that. Of course, I liked David Eddings Losers too... I guess I should read Ring of the Niebelungen to have something to compare it with.
Um Ok, you left out gollum dying, you should have mentioned the number of companions, and Bilbo is his Uncle and Guardian... Not particularly foster father. What are ents? Where did sam go and what about Shelob. Lorien gifts, Battle of helms deep and scouring. Otherwise pretty fair job.

Its not that I do or don't like X, it is that KDE and Gnome both assume that you are running an 800x600 screen. and therefore certain options on large configuration windows aren't visible at 640x480, and I have been unable to discover how to adjust font/window settings to use it correctly, so that was more of an X rant than a KNOPPIX rant.
None of those is even close conceptually to a minister coming to the head of a project and telling him that they will not be permitted to do business locally until he has recieved his piece of the action.

you might do better with one of the roll your own distros, Gentoo, Sourcemage, etc. especially if all you need is a text terminal... you could probably even get something that would fit on a floppy as in kernal and terminal software.

What are the minimum system requirements?
Intel-compatible CPU (i486 or later),
20 MB of RAM for text mode, at least 96 MB for graphics mode with KDE (at least 128 MB of RAM is recommended to use the various office products),
bootable CD-ROM drive, or a boot floppy and standard CD-ROM (IDE/ATAPI or SCSI),
standard SVGA-compatible graphics card,
serial or PS/2 standard mouse or IMPS/2-compatible USB-mouse.
And for graphics mode, you need a monitor that will support 800x600 for reasonable performance. it will run at 640x480, but feels cramped.

Ok, Kidding. I'm actually quite impressed with the wide support Knoppix provides for hardware and functionality. 5 years ago, the network computer theory was being trundled out, AGAIN. Now we have the capability for a truly functional dumb terminal/server configuration and it will run on any commodity hardware/software higher than a 486DX(allegedly). It ran well on my oddball Celeron 300 with a 640x480 monitor, although right now that is my only complaint with the various implementations of X...
U.S. corporations are prohibited by law from offering bribes to foreign governments, which always places them at a competitive disadvantage when competing with European firms.
And which doesn't usually stop them, except that they must figure out creative ways to list it on their books. Although, it does confuse many of them, as it isn't the customary way we in the US do business.
I have a copy that was re-printed from DDJ in a DDJ Collection(bound), But as I understand, it was printed in rather a wide variety of trade publications.
oddly enough, Learning to brew or bake in EQ is fairly intuitively related to knowing how to bake IRL. There are exception, and the whole disposable cooking container bit was annoying, but on the whole, the recipes matched how I would do it IRL.
And when a button pops off your perfectly servicable trousers what are you going to do?? throw them out? wear them without the button, pay $5-10 to have them repaired professionally, or put the button back on?? OR??? could you successfully convert a pair of long trousers into shorts?? these are useful skills today.

If this were the case, MS would have bought SCO. OTOH, IBM also has a first rate legal team, and has rather more experience, so it would be the height of folly for MS to expose itself in that manner.
Ok, guess I should pick up a new copy with all the ammendments included. I think the copy on my desk is in a document collection from the 50s. And thanks.
