It's awfully difficult to do things in the United States, but one has to wonder what sort of things would be required to artificially set this off.. I understand that a volcano has a lot of energy, but I don't think that nuclear weapons are totally out of the question. IMO, the real question is whether you would be able to position a large explosion to cause this slide to happen.
You make a good point. They can't do everything, so they go for the cases that have a high dollar value associated with them. But on the other hand, the corporations with money are easily capable of doing this on their own. In fact, it would probably cost less and get more results to hire a couple of geeks to do their dirty work..
You're better off just robbing a bank and buying the software, if you can't afford it! Less jail time if you're caught!
On a more serious note, these guys aren't in big trouble for using/sharing pirated material, they're into mass distribution. The fellow who's looking at a maximum of 15 years is there because he's 1337 and is distributing tons copyrighted material for the heck of it. If you don't want the time, don't do the crime. Pretty easy to avoid this one.
I'd want the help of law enforcement if someone was stealing things from my place of business. I don't see that it's all that much different to have help with the piracy issue. It's true that the developer doesn't physically lose anything, but surely the developer's license ought to be respected. If you don't like the licensing or cost of Photoshop, use The Gimp. There's really no excuse.
When my best friend died in a tragic hiking accident, I spent about 30 hours trying to hack his hotmail account for his family- after they found out that Hotmail was not going to give it up for us. I never did get in.
I've been heavily into the MMORPG scene over the last few years, and some of my closest friends are folks that I don't have any other contact with. If one of them was to get hit by a bus, I'd never know what happened. That would be odd. I suppose that from my side of the monitor it would be exactly the same as if they had suddenly quit playing the game and never contacted me again. That's an odd concept.
Because sound bytes are what sell right now. When Ballmer released his memo, the key phrases were gobbled up by oodles of gullible execs. How many people are going to see the rebuttal? The rebuttal will repair less than the original memo hurt. Ballmer wins. Again.
OMG, you pig! You obviously don't care about the feelings or thoughts of the stupid people of the nation. Such intolerence. The way I see it, if a good percentage of the nation is stupid, they should be able to vote for their stupid candidate of choice! Otherwise we'd just take Kerry's name off the ballot and get it over with.
It's the character development that makes most games addicting. I play Dark Age of Camelot approximately 40 hours a week. I love the game, it's FUN for me. The point that I feel it becomes an addiction is when you continue to play when it's not fun anymore. Think camping one spawn for 6 days in EverQuest, deleting your characters out of frustration and then starting the 6 month levelling process over the next day because you can't stand to not play. I've felt that, it scared me and I quit for awhile. But to be honest with you, I've been more addicted to text-based MUDs, and I know people who have been more addicted to D&D style board games.
The problem with Adware/Spyware/whatever isn't so much the invasion of privacy part. After all, in most cases, you did click accept at some point. That's what happens when you need your pr0nzor or bikini calendar so much that you don't care where it comes from, you deserve it. The problem is the lousy implimentation of the invasion of privacy.
I helped a friend diagnose his constantly crashing computer remotely one time and found that he had over 18,000 individual copies of some type of CoolWeb in his Windows\System folder.
The real problem isn't with New.net hijacking and sending people to other domains; the real problem is when their software breaks and you can't use any TCP/IP related applications until you find someone with some technical know-how to fix it.
These bastards should be liable for this sort of thing. Actually, they probably are.
The Winamp loophole isn't that big of a deal, by itself. Sure, as a Mozilla user, if you download a skin made by some jerk who put a trojan into it you might get nailed. The real problem is that IE automatically installs the skins without user intervention. You all remember the email forward that went around telling people to delete the teddy bear icon from the windows\system folder, don't you? The one that made Windows unbootable? On a secure platform, you're safe unless you become gullible. Same deal here. The real security hole belongs to IE.
Let me introduce you to these new (as of uh.. well.. when was writing first invented?) concepts called "backups". And "insurance". And "service". How long would it actually take, in the case of catastrophic natural phenomenon, to replace your z900? How long would it take to replace your thousands of PCs?
Look, it's not like they didn't let him fly. They just made him wait until a supervisor with the authority to give him a bording pass arrived on the scene. I'm glad they're giving equal treatment to average joes and to important people alike. So, a few people are going to get hassled at the airport. It happens. You'll live, most likely.
My wife just recently flew from Nevada to Oregon via America West with no ID. She even picked up her e-ticket. They did give her a lot of trouble and made her board the plane last and stuff, but they let her fly. She accidentally left the part of her purse with all of her ID at her sister's house a few hours from the airport.
I could have sworn I just saw a slashdot article stating that 80% of all spam came from some country like Elbonia or something. does anyone else remember that? Maybe someone with the skills to find it?
I emailed Katie Tarbox this morning, and received a reply in a matter of minutes:
I appreciate your thoughts and understand them completely. It is not posted on my web site, but this issue is between Katie Jones and Penguin Putnam. They own the name Katie.com as a published book and decided to call it that. I can do nothing in my power to change it. I would suggest if you would like your voice to be heard and a chance that something is done about it, direct your sympathy to Penguin Putnam. For the record I have never harassed Katie Jones for her site.
Best, Katie Tarbox
I sure don't envy her. I don't want to put words in her mouth, but what she doesn't say makes it sound a lot like she isn't altogether pleased with the way Penguin Putnam has been dealing with things. Actually, it sounds to me like she didn't ask for this and is tired of it.
I do network administration on a variety of small networks. I've seen a lot of secretarial type people doing around 30-45 wpm. So I'd say that no, typing is not necessary at the moment. Even computer literacy seems to be way down on the list of requirements for people who sit in front of a computer most of the day. Problem solving and organizational skills seem to be more in-demand. But more than that, I think that appearance and demeanor is the selling point when it comes to an office job these days. Sure, they talk and talk about someone's qualifications and everything.. but in the end, they hire the one who instills confidence by lookin in your eye and smiling and has a good looking resume. That one is going to make your company look good.
I don't have the money to spend on games. I bum them off friends to try them out, or play them at a friend's house or something. Doom3 is one of the few games that I'm confident I will be happy with buying. I don't think piracy is going to have a significant impact on Doom3's sales. We like the game and the company too much.
For me, the headaches only come if I've been consuming caffine in the previous day or two. If I cut back slowly, I can drop caffine completely without running into them. If I go cold turkey from 3-4 cups a day to 0, I'll have unbelievably painful and unrelenting headaches for the next 1.5-2 days. None of the headache medicine I've tried except (surprise surprise) the stuff with caffine in it seems to make any difference at all.
That's weird. I have no PDF problems with Internet Explorer. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I rarely view more than 1 or 2 things at once in IE.
I have problems viewing PDFs with Firefox. If I open more than one at a time I almost always wind up watching Firefox crash and burn. I think it may have to do with the fact that I have Acrobat, not just Reader. I'm not sure. I can't reproduce it all of the time, but it's very frustrating when I'm in the middle of a good slashdot thread and everything goes bye-bye. Crashes suck. I still prefer to use Firefox, though.. I'd rather crash once in awhile than spend my morning trying to remove VX2 or something of that nature.

Usually around three ounces.
"People used to smoke weed on downtown street corners, it certainly isn't that way anymore."
Funny, I observed that exact thing last year when I was browsing around downtown in Minneapolis.

Dude! Me too. Co-op in the original Doom was such a blast. I really miss that sort of thing. Best way to enjoy a game.

You're either rediculously lucky, or you're full of crap. I think you're full of crap.
You obviously don't use an eMachine.
