If it is of questionable legality, shouldn't it be brought out in court. That way people will know if it is legal or illegal.

While I am totally against frivilous lawsuits, having something brought to court to determine if it is legal is occassionally necessary.

Assuming that things aren't settled on the sidelines, of course.

I used to purchase Sony TVs at home and instructed my friends as well. I also used to point them towards Sony PCs, since the media integration would be easier for them.

Now it's HPs for them (and me), and Samsung TVs are looking pretty nice... I bought myself a Samsung DLP and love it. My dad's Sony XBR is getting pretty old (it's a 65 incher from about 15 years ago). It'll be the first time my dad ever bought a non-Sony TV (His first was ~1972).

Before these, I used (ran one or two applications on) an Apple-2, but I really don't consider that since I only used it a handful of times. The TRS-80 and Vic-20 I used on a daily basis for at least 4 months during a school year.

A couple years later I bought a C-64, where I programmed in Basic and assembler.

On the same vein, my dad's first TV was a Sony that lasted upwards of 15 years without a problem. Since then he always bought Sony TVs. Over the last decade he has come to me for advice on electronics.

I pointed him towards the iMac 21" G5. He will never willingly use Windows again.

I got him a iPod for Christmas. His CD collection will never leave the house again.

Now he's looking for a new TV to replace his Sony 65" XBR that's about a dozen years old. I think I'm going to have him get a Samsung. I don't know which brand for sure, but I'm sure as hell not going to recommend a Sony.

Brand loyalty works both ways. We've been loyal to Sony. I personally feel betrayed. He can't believe that what I've told him about the root kits is even true. (Saying that it's obviously illegal)

If you are looking for libraries that you can add to your own commercial projects with impunity, I suggest looking towards LGPL code. With the LGPL you can distribute the library along with your binary and are obligated to release the source code to only the library. In fact, you can change the library around for your benefit and use it and still only have to publish the library.

Much more commercial friendly that the GPL. :-)

"Must See TV" (NBC on Thursday nights) has become a joke. It used to be made up of some incredible shows - both dramas and comedies - which kept the attention span of the viewers and made them want to tune in week after week. It was so good in the 80s that there used to be a bump in the crime rate on Thursday nights attributable to people being less vigalent during the 8-11pm time slot.

Now I don't even tune in to NBC on Thursday nights. I watch CSI at 9pm (or download the torrent later) and haven't watched ER in a couple years at best. I don't even know what's on at 8pm (EST).

I agree with the article that LUGs mattered in the dark days of Linux, when partitioning the hard drive and setting up lilo were done with your fingers crossed.

Now, with near-automated installs of most distributions, the average user who wants linux just has to pop in the CD and answer some (mostly easy) questions.

The LUGs have been supplanted by forums for users. Why wait until a LUG meeting to ask a question or trouble shoot a problem when you can ask it on your distribution's forums and get a knowledgeable answer in a fairly reasonable time period.

Most distributions have very end user friendly forums. If people on the forums can't help there's always google as a backup.

Talk about clunky...

So for now I will watch regular TV and upconverted DVDs (which look pretty nice). Maybe I'll get a MacMini at some point and use it as the monitor. I consider the device an investment in the future and something to block a hole in the wall in the living room.
