Say all you want about the Indian accent, and the difficluty of american consumers in understanding it, but written english is a whole different ball game.
Most of us Indians, learn English from a very early age, sometimes almost simultaneously with our mother tongue. We learn spellings from pre-school days and grammar for day one in first grade. Indian english is based on british english, and thus the grammar and spellings are identical to british. We study shakespear, wordsworth, woodhouse more than say longfellow, or Poe or Twain
/. is hardly the place and the occasion to display our language skills.
I can empathise with Americans who have lost jobs due to out sourcing, but that hardly gives you the right to make such blatantly flase blanket statements.
Elements users, correct me if I am wrong, but Elements doesn't support Layers (Adjustment or Mask) , Channels etc amongst other things, while PSP supports them.
If you want about 50% of PS functionality and can't use anything but PS UI, then go with Elements , otherwise if you want 90% of PS functionality and don't mind a slightly slower performance, go with PSP.
If you are into graphic design, I am not sure what to advice you , but if you are into photography, then I would recommend a very fast Harddisk and tons of RAM. PSP some times gets stuck writting undo/redo data to disk.
I distinctly remember reading that NSA stopped deveolpment on this project , under pressure from US govt. which was under pressure from Microsoft..So what happend now ?
But then again I read that on/. , so the authenticity of it is highly questionable.
I guess we shouldn't be too scared of tech support being sent offshore... those aren't the knowlegable people anyway, so they're not exactly taking our job.
You are looking at the whole situation from a very narrow perspective. Even though you consider yourself a knowledgable person (which btw I highly doubt), there are lots of american people who are losing their bread and butter because of call center jobs being transfered to India.
And just because the job doesn't require toomuch knowledge doesn't make it any less important. The jobs and the money they generate contribute to the american economy. So your argument that it's not a worrying factor, is mute.
The irony is I am an indian. The sad fact is quite a lot of the indians who work at call centers in india are in fact technology graduates and masters, and quite knowledgable. But they choose those jobs, simply because it pays their rent. And the lack of a familiar accent to american consumers is bring them a bad name.
So the situation is not working in anybody's favour, neither the american worker's who lost the jobs, nor the indian techies who gained them. I guess the only winner is corporate america.
Why does every person, who is interested to see open source succeed in business environment, making it a resposibiity of the OSS community.
OSS software for most parts was never written with the objective to form a free alternative to propritory software. Most OSS projects started because of fustrations of the author at using the tools that existed at hand, and the inability to circumvent those tools, (the tools being propritory in nature).
Linus never wrote the linux kernel , so that it can topple the microsoft empire, much as most of you like to belive. neither was he interested in fighting the big Unix vendors at that time. He just wanted his own version of Unix to tinker with and Minix wouldn't allow him to do just that.
So to all those who say "This could have been a break through year for OSS, but for....". Please go read some philosophy behind OSS.
it did little permanent damage, at least in India.
Yes , very little damage, except sow seeds of communal hatred amongst the hindus and muslims, and partition the country in three pieces and lead to communal roits which left millions dead, and create so much hatred amongs the Indians and Pakistanis, that a Nuclear program is considered a Key acchievement in the country's growth, when Half the country is hungry.
The british and british alone are responsible for half the problems of the current world.
The relocation of Indian Tamils to Sri Lanka, has left that country in a Civil war for last 30 years.
The relocation of convicts to australia, has systematically destroyed the aborigins.
The partition of lands in africa, which left so many tribes half divided in various countries, leading to so many bloody civil wars...
(Bombay is Mumbai? So is Bombay an archaic usage(like Bangkok is for the capital of Thailand) or is it just an Anglicised version of the word?)
The original name of the city is "Mumbapuri", which is a combination of two words "Mumba" , which comes from an ancient temple in the city called Mumbadevi (Godess Mumba) temple. And the prefix "puri", which means place. i.e Mumbapuri means the place of Godess Mumba.
Mumbapuri over the ages became Mumbai, and when the portugese captured the city in 16xx, from the local king, they christened it to "Bombay", which If I am right means "Good Day" in portugese.
Funnyly the later immegrants to the city , especially from Norther parts of India mixed the two words "Mumbai" and "Bombay" , and called it "Bambai".
The british when they got the city from portugese, as part of a dawory , retained the portugese name ane the city was called "Bombay" since then.
Within the last 10years, nationalistic elements in the Indian Political scene, lobbied to have the city restored its old Name to Mumbai. There was a time when these politicians were buzy changing the names of cities , historic places across india back to their pre-british names.
The people she pissed off were never her customers anyway
Not exactly true. I think the people she pissed off were her VERY customers, well atleast most of them, otherwise who would give a damn.
I was least bothered by the halftime show, but I am not her customer. Infact I can't even name a single song of hers.
Belive me there are lots of smart and educated people in this world who have better things to do than bitch about a half time show of a football match.
Would you prefer to buy locks from a company whose locks previously had a flaw , which enabled anyone with a hairpin to open the lock, although the company now claims all such flaws are now removed ?
Would you continue holding an account with a bank, whose ATM machines were infact totally neglecting PINs , even though no one actually tired it ?
I don't think, the microsoft bashers are saying that microsoft makes crappy s/w and open source makes great s/w. But what they are saying is, dispite making mistakes after mistakes, microsoft is not accountable to any of its mistakes. Neither are large corporations or end users bothering to try alternatives merely because of intertia
So what is the incentive for Microsoft to improve its security track record ?
Have you read the LoRT ?
Actually i wanted "frodo from middle earth".
jeasus, the moment you see "middle ea", you assumed it was middle east. How paranoidal.
The half cut name was because slashdot doesn't give you an option to change it . I entered "frodo from middle earth" and/. truncated it to "...middle ea".
Besides its very stupid of you to gudge my nationality from my handle.
If all these jobs are related to call center, I say LET them NOT move to india.
Yes you heard me , let them NOT move to india. The last thing I want as an Indian, my country to be columbia/mexico of the IT industry. I think indians should be ashamed to be the janitors of IT industry.
Also for those of who are going to point to M$ and IBM and HP research centers being moved to India. I would rather see our own Indian companies becoming more self relient and working for the benefit of Indian consumers than US.
The more India depends upon foreign lands to create local jobs, the less it becomes self relinet and lesser powerful.
India for one should take lessons from its colonial past. Rememer East india company came as traders looking for spices and ended up ruling the country for 200 years. This time its going to be different, its economical slavery that we should be afraid of. In this day an age no power is better than economical power and serving joe six-packs for their problems loggin on to AOL, though a short term profitable business , is ruining the resourses of the country.
I am not ranting against US. Infact exactly the opposite. The US and its companies should also strive towards self serving economical structure.
Pst..you don't need to install acrobat reader to read PDF documents.
Install ghostscript and gsview (google the terms for links).
gsview does require registration, but it is GNU s/w and even without registration you can use it fully, barring an annoying reminder which pops up every time you start it.
Obviously you haven't seen the movie , so you didn't catch the reference. btw I highly recommend you watch it.
Well at least he is not manually m@5+rub@+3ing , caged animals for artificial insemination.
Oh yeah, well I had 53x with your wife.
I run gentoo 1.4 with 2.4.20 soething kernel, Now I want to try 2.6.3. I don't think "emerge -uD world" would do the trick in this case.
If that doesn't,REMOVE THE BINARY because the program is badly behaved!
How is a binary removed from the process tables ? Or is he simply talking of deleting the file ?
Where are my mod points when I need them. That's just too funny.
I say :- I hear I gossip. I see I drool. I do and I regret.

for a moment i thought you were saying farting...phew
Yes, a simple document reader, crashing an entire OS, by just some mouse clicks, speaks volumes about the quality of OS.
Install Adobe acrobat reader 4. (any version pre 5). Open a large PDF file. (say more than 30 pages).
Click on the scroll bar very quickly 3-4 times..
KA..BOOM
The duracell bunny is destroyed by the slashdot holy handgranade, and withing 3 posts. Oh the sweet irony

There are already hitachi CF cards with 4 GB capacity and don't be surprized to see 32GB CF cards in a year or so.
