Say all you want about the Indian accent, and the difficluty of american consumers in understanding it, but written english is a whole different ball game.

Most of us Indians, learn English from a very early age, sometimes almost simultaneously with our mother tongue. We learn spellings from pre-school days and grammar for day one in first grade. Indian english is based on british english, and thus the grammar and spellings are identical to british. We study shakespear, wordsworth, woodhouse more than say longfellow, or Poe or Twain

/. is hardly the place and the occasion to display our language skills.

I can empathise with Americans who have lost jobs due to out sourcing, but that hardly gives you the right to make such blatantly flase blanket statements.

Elements users, correct me if I am wrong, but Elements doesn't support Layers (Adjustment or Mask) , Channels etc amongst other things, while PSP supports them.

If you want about 50% of PS functionality and can't use anything but PS UI, then go with Elements , otherwise if you want 90% of PS functionality and don't mind a slightly slower performance, go with PSP.

If you are into graphic design, I am not sure what to advice you , but if you are into photography, then I would recommend a very fast Harddisk and tons of RAM. PSP some times gets stuck writting undo/redo data to disk.

I guess we shouldn't be too scared of tech support being sent offshore... those aren't the knowlegable people anyway, so they're not exactly taking our job.

You are looking at the whole situation from a very narrow perspective. Even though you consider yourself a knowledgable person (which btw I highly doubt), there are lots of american people who are losing their bread and butter because of call center jobs being transfered to India.

And just because the job doesn't require toomuch knowledge doesn't make it any less important. The jobs and the money they generate contribute to the american economy. So your argument that it's not a worrying factor, is mute.

The irony is I am an indian. The sad fact is quite a lot of the indians who work at call centers in india are in fact technology graduates and masters, and quite knowledgable. But they choose those jobs, simply because it pays their rent. And the lack of a familiar accent to american consumers is bring them a bad name.

So the situation is not working in anybody's favour, neither the american worker's who lost the jobs, nor the indian techies who gained them. I guess the only winner is corporate america.

Why does every person, who is interested to see open source succeed in business environment, making it a resposibiity of the OSS community.

OSS software for most parts was never written with the objective to form a free alternative to propritory software. Most OSS projects started because of fustrations of the author at using the tools that existed at hand, and the inability to circumvent those tools, (the tools being propritory in nature).

Linus never wrote the linux kernel , so that it can topple the microsoft empire, much as most of you like to belive. neither was he interested in fighting the big Unix vendors at that time. He just wanted his own version of Unix to tinker with and Minix wouldn't allow him to do just that.

So to all those who say "This could have been a break through year for OSS, but for ....". Please go read some philosophy behind OSS.

(Bombay is Mumbai? So is Bombay an archaic usage(like Bangkok is for the capital of Thailand) or is it just an Anglicised version of the word?)

The original name of the city is "Mumbapuri", which is a combination of two words "Mumba" , which comes from an ancient temple in the city called Mumbadevi (Godess Mumba) temple. And the prefix "puri", which means place. i.e Mumbapuri means the place of Godess Mumba.

Mumbapuri over the ages became Mumbai, and when the portugese captured the city in 16xx, from the local king, they christened it to "Bombay", which If I am right means "Good Day" in portugese.

Funnyly the later immegrants to the city , especially from Norther parts of India mixed the two words "Mumbai" and "Bombay" , and called it "Bambai".

The british when they got the city from portugese, as part of a dawory , retained the portugese name ane the city was called "Bombay" since then.

Within the last 10years, nationalistic elements in the Indian Political scene, lobbied to have the city restored its old Name to Mumbai. There was a time when these politicians were buzy changing the names of cities , historic places across india back to their pre-british names.
