What's wrong here, is that Microsoft thinks that IT bosses, are all PHBs and it would be very easy to spread FUD amongst them.

When I started as a developer 10 years ago, may be this was the case, my bosses then had absolutely no clue what programming was all about (I am not talking about a specific programming language, or paradigm, just programming or software engineering in general)).

These were the type of people, who felt the sand under their feet, slipping away every time there were concerns regarding the technology they were managing. And the reason was obvious, they DIDN'T KNOW about the technology they were managing.

But now it's a very very different world, people who were senior programmers then, are now managers, and as such are in much better shape to judge the technologies they work with.

So in retrospect, Microsoft may have had luck in these kind of FUD tactics, 10 years ago, but that won't work now. Sure there will be some, who will fold and pay up, but then most of the competent people in the industry that I know, are saying...."Hang on a minute,, there is something very fishy about these claims"

  11. svn+ssh and master mode ssh. on Performance Tuning Subversion · · Score: 4, Informative
My solution, use svn+ssh and keep a ssh connection to the svn server in Master mode. All svn+ssh activity tunnels through this master connection , no need for ssh handshake each time or for that matter no need to even open a socket each time.

Plus if the master connection is set to compress data ( -C ) , then you get transparent compression.

Now if only I could expand all this to fit 2 pages....Profit!!!

I use to work for a big big financial company. They had lots of stupid policies, like I.E. only. (wouldn't even allow us to install firefox). google groups was banned because people could browse hacking groups (I am not kidding ).

And yet they were hit every time a Microsoft worm was on the loose. They spent countless hours recovering from these break outs. So if you choose to close your ears and eyes, and insist on using microsoft only products, then you CAN have damages.

  20. Re:If Java 1.4 works for you.... on Java EE 5 Development Waiting on Vendors · · Score: 4, Informative
Umm, Java 5 or rather JDK 5, is different than Java EE 5.

As for JDK 5, there are plenty of reasons to use JDK 5, over 1.4, even on a J2EE 1.4 App.

    TO name a few...

    • Generics, type safety at compilation time
    • Enhanced for loops, bye bye, iterator.hasNext()
    • Auto Boxing of primitives... bye bye List.insert(new Integer(5)
    • Proper enumeration suport.. bye bye scores of static final variables
As for using Java EE 5, there are even more reasons to use it, once ejb 3 specs are stabilized.

    e.g.

    • Java Persistence API is so so much better than J2EE 1.4 entity beans.
    • JSF is so so much better than struts.
    • Stateful session beans make much more sense now. see jboss-seam

Last but not least, Annotations , bye bye xdoclets, ejb descriptors, . Seriously Annotations, alone, make a very strong case, for adopting Java 5, and Java EE 5.
