Another thing worth noting is that there are a lot more people skilled with firmware modification now. Someone will be able to extract a key if the player's firmware is extracted. And chances are that someone will be found in a release group with access to one of them.
The most logical downside ignoring all hypothetical diseases is that it uses too much energy. Fat needs to be produced to be stored for times when the hunt is not plentiful and that sort of thing. Raw strength was never something that was strongly selected for in early humans.
I took the pilot program 2 years ago as a junior. One of the questions was something to the effect of : Choose one invention throughout history and write about how it has contributed to society or hurt society. So my friend wrote about the wheel and stuck only to how it has hurt society. He made sure to use unnessecarily big words and stick only to how it made people lazy. It was the most absurd essay ever, but he still got one of the highest grades in the class. It was damn funny.
The only problem is that there is noone behind it anymore. I fear that the computers have gained sentience and are creating a cashflow for themselves. It is just a matter of time. Skynet is here!!!!!! Run for your lives!
I for one welcome our Casino-extorting, computer overlords.
Already, genetic testing of potential IVF embryos is taking place. Shouldn't a parent using IVF as a means to become pregnant have the right to make sure that their kid does not suffer from some genetic disease. I know that I would want the best baby to be selected.
Why is it wrong to test the babies before implanting them? The second article pointed to this as a ethical dilemma, but I think that if one is too cheap to ensure a disease free future for their IVF baby, then they shouldn't be having a baby in the first place. Parents should have the right to get the embryos screened for whatever is technologically possible to be screened for. And, if this includes intelligence or athletic ability, then more power to them.
FYI, uranium is only libel to explode when critical mass is reached. Dropping a piece of uranium is less dangerous than holding on to it, unless your big toe is in the way.

I think that a non-profit organization that has the specific goal of raising money to support the Open Source community would do a great service. It would collect money and pay for expenses of certain projects. Companies could donate money and get tax write-offs for it. The non-profit could also allow companies to earmark a certain percentage of the funds to go to a certain project. If the company wants to switch entirely to open source, they could donate to the project(s) they need the most for the switch. The companies would be more willing to contribute to open source as they are getting tax write-offs along with something useful to the company.
Amazon must be pretty good about this. I purchased the first 2 seasons of the Family Guy from Amazon.co.uk on DVD and had no hassles. The only problems that I had was that the DVD's came out here(USA, NTSC Region 1) about 3 months after I purchased them, and to top that, the PAL region 2 DVD's that I have are poorly mastered.
Getting a product early often has a usablity/support price, not to mention shipping.
Come on, you knew that eventually someone would film the blowing up of a whale. If for nothing else, the wanted to get on "When Whales Explode" or whatever it was on FOX.
Just because the laws that he broke dealt with copyright infringement, does not mean that slashdot has to support him in any way. The guy is a criminal. It needlessly wastes efforts when one tries to make him into a martyr and it takes down the image of RIAA-sued college students when one compares his plight to theirs. This is not to say that they were completely in the right, but a lesser punishment should be given to one who has no plans to profit off of copyright infringement than to a person who has goals of selling a device meant solely for breaking copyrights. His punishment in this aspect seems fair except maybe for the life long sentence to poverty.
Hasn't anyone seen Independence Day? The only thing that this coud be is aliens.
Marty Gilbert: A countdown... wait, a countdown to what David? David Levinson: It's like in chess: First, you strategically position your pieces and when the timing is right you strike. They're using this signal to syncronize their efforts and in 5 hours the countdown will be over. Marty Gilbert: And then what? David Levinson: Checkmate.
Is it coincidental that there are only 12 days till July 4, I think not!
By the way, did you know that sarcasm isn't listed in the dictionary... look it up!
No, but I did know that gullible wasn't in there.

They probably have more data than that, for instance our sun has no chance of even supernovaing, much more massive stars are required to do that.

It sounds to me as though you have been out of college too long.

You think thats bad, /. gave me mod points last night. Must, not moderate today! Must save. NOOOOOOOOOOOO.
The real problem is fluoridation. Hence I only drink distilled water, rain water, and grain alcohol.
As dumb as that sounds, I am sure they will keep track of the marketing data on this. If they dont, they are wasting a good oppurtunity.
append -porn to your search to get all the motorcycle candles you want, except the pornographic ones.

Popups? What are popups? I have seen tabs, but these popup things are alien to me.

IANAL, but this seems like a viable plan to me.

Warrants are not designed to show wrong doing, but only a suspiscion of wrong doing.
