So my friend wrote about the wheel and stuck only to how it has hurt society. He made sure to use unnessecarily big words and stick only to how it made people lazy. It was the most absurd essay ever, but he still got one of the highest grades in the class. It was damn funny.

  12. Genetic disease could be gone for IVF babies on Petri Dish Babies, 25 Years Later · · Score: 1

Already, genetic testing of potential IVF embryos is taking place. Shouldn't a parent using IVF as a means to become pregnant have the right to make sure that their kid does not suffer from some genetic disease. I know that I would want the best baby to be selected.
Why is it wrong to test the babies before implanting them? The second article pointed to this as a ethical dilemma, but I think that if one is too cheap to ensure a disease free future for their IVF baby, then they shouldn't be having a baby in the first place. Parents should have the right to get the embryos screened for whatever is technologically possible to be screened for. And, if this includes intelligence or athletic ability, then more power to them.

  16. Non Profit on Funding Open Source? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think that a non-profit organization that has the specific goal of raising money to support the Open Source community would do a great service. It would collect money and pay for expenses of certain projects. Companies could donate money and get tax write-offs for it. The non-profit could also allow companies to earmark a certain percentage of the funds to go to a certain project. If the company wants to switch entirely to open source, they could donate to the project(s) they need the most for the switch. The companies would be more willing to contribute to open source as they are getting tax write-offs along with something useful to the company.

IANAL, but this seems like a viable plan to me.

Amazon must be pretty good about this. I purchased the first 2 seasons of the Family Guy from Amazon.co.uk on DVD and had no hassles. The only problems that I had was that the DVD's came out here(USA, NTSC Region 1) about 3 months after I purchased them, and to top that, the PAL region 2 DVD's that I have are poorly mastered.

Just because the laws that he broke dealt with copyright infringement, does not mean that slashdot has to support him in any way. The guy is a criminal. It needlessly wastes efforts when one tries to make him into a martyr and it takes down the image of RIAA-sued college students when one compares his plight to theirs. This is not to say that they were completely in the right, but a lesser punishment should be given to one who has no plans to profit off of copyright infringement than to a person who has goals of selling a device meant solely for breaking copyrights. His punishment in this aspect seems fair except maybe for the life long sentence to poverty.
