Eventually someone is going to be burned by this cycle, and it most likely will be the "$400 every six month" video card manufacturers.
Not entirely. Your large software companies are closely tied to the video card manufacturers. For reasons of simplicity, they would need to have specific hardware to run their games on for testing purposes. If you don't have compatibility with a certain type of video card then your game just isn't going to sell. This is part of what's pushing the gaming industry. The video card makers tell the developers what should be possible in the next generation of video cards, and then the developers choose to put in the support for it, or just leave it out.
Without knowing what's going to be available then the software manufacturers won't know what to develop for.
You could also argue that the developers use what's currently the biggest and baddest of the video cards out there to do their testing and coding for, but this does leave them slightly behind the times when it comes to release, because their software doesn't push the envelope on the now newest video cards. This happens alot simply because the software developers can't waste the money on something that might be there in the future.
"It all sounds like a poor man's grid computing," says Greg Scott, IS manager at Oregon State University College of Business in Corvalis, who had not heard of the spamming-for-pay tactic, but was not surprised. He says Oregon State throttles down bandwidth available to residence halls because of file-sharing and restricts the ports students can use. "Universities are for experimenting, pushing the edge. But some students push harder than others," Scott says.
...and restricts the ports students can use. "Universities are for experimenting,...
Doesn't look like they're experimenting too much, since they're restricted from using certain "ports". Could just be me though.
But with environmental laws making land disposal more difficult in some areas, poultry companies have sought new ways of handling that waste.
Enter the tornado in a can.
Running that material through a drier and then through Polifka's machine could produce a powder form of those poultry byproducts that could be sold as a flavoring or nutritious additive to pet foods or fertilizers, Winsness thought.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to call bullshit on this one...
The company I work for built and installed 15 systems with identical configurations, all having a 20Gb Fijitsu hard drives. Each system was installed within the same week. Approximately 10 weeks later, each of the hard drives failed, in almost the same order they were installed.. I'd say this is definately a problem they need to look into.
"The P2P Piracy Prevention Act, proposed by Senator Howard Berman, is currently being redrafted following severe criticism and is not likely to be introduced in any form until January 2003 at the earliest."
So this basically means that it's being rewritten and filled with all sorts of terms that most of the people in the senate aren't familiar with, and that most of them could care less about. It's all about misdirection. People went up in arms about the original bill, because they understood what it was talking about. The redraft, will more than likely be the same identical document. The only difference between the two, is that the second will have 40 pages of filler information that is there to confuse and misdirect those reading it, so that it becomes more of a hassle to read and comprehend it, than to just pass it along. That's just my opinion anyway.
There are several implementations in HTML that allow you to upload any font to a clients browser, so that you can display the page, as you intended it, instead of having the client browser pick a font at random for them. It's easy enough to do, just requires one line of code, and the font uploaded to the server.
I can see, the draw for open source fonts, however. I think the reasoning behind this is that it will allow people to create works, using whatever open source font they want, and not have to worry about paying someone for it. just my Humble opinion... I could be wrong...
will still crack and break for no apparent reason.
On the website, it's stated that since the manufacturing process is done at a low temperature, plastics can be used in a future implementation of the product. This would mean that the display would be more durable than LCD displays with glass. Currently they use glass in the manufacturing procees, probably due to the tight manufacturing integration with LCD display manufacturing, since they're trying to reduce initial costs.
Well, I guess slashdot is officially slashdotted...

Title: Microsoft Word - 3DB823B-1ABD-0AA6.doc
This makes sense, as you cannot create an adobe PDF document from within the Adobe application, you have to actually use an outside application in order to create the document. So, it's reasonable that they used Microsoft Word, and then converted it to PDF to make it easier for people to download and view.
"Tom's hasn't started a review unbiased in easily 2 years."
While I generally think that Tom's is biased in some respects, this example isn't the best one. (Not that I'm trying to create havoc or anything, or disagree totally with the Anonymous Coward's opinion, I'll just present my own opinion.) Realistically, most people still use a floppy drive. Although you can burn a bootable CD, CD's are still rather impractical for transferring small files to another computer. You say, why not transfer it over the network, well, if you're trying to get the newest NIC drivers to a computer that you just put the NIC into, then well you have a problem.
Next problem, the reason that 2 power connecters was suggested, was for the Radeon 9700. If you take a look at the card, you'll see that it requires an external power source, as the AGP bus isn't quite powerful enough to give it ample power. This external power connector is a Floppy Power connector. You'll probably start seeing more graphics cards like this in the coming years, unless they drastically increase the voltage supplied to the AGP slot.
"At first it looked like Deep Fritz was in deep trouble. "This sort of position is our worst fear," said Fritz programmer Frans Morsch. The position was closed and Kramnik was massing his forces for a typical anti-computer crush."
This sort of position is our worst fear
I'm curious as to which position it was... Missionary? Queen on Top? With a name like Deep Fritz, one really has to wonder.

your math might need a bit of work.
40,500,000,000 / 60 = 675000000 minutes.
675000000 / 60 = 11250000 hours
11250000 / 24 = 468750 days
468750 / 365.25 = 1283.35 years
So... he could spend it all in a mere 1283 years. Not bad.. Here's hoping I didn't royally screw up MY math.
Geez, not another viagra user's story... Haven't we heard enough??
Hmm, don't guess he's going to be getting much use out of the Drive-UP ATM's...

"So what is this book really about?"
Judging from the review... Who knows...
Okay, so I can go on Ebay, and buy these, but I can't buy a burned CD-R of an indie band's music?
Where's the sense in that?
