On the other hand, Oracle could want Novell so that they can make Novell no longer back IBM on the SCO vs. IBM case. This would potentially leave Oracle with the only legitimate Linux distribution and stack of enterprise software. It may be an added bonus for Ellison's ego and too sweet an opportunity to pass up.

The difference the Internet makes is that your community is now not just your town, Alabama, or New York, but the world who should decide what's obscene. Unfortunately, who really has an effect on the community definition of obscenity will usually end up being whoever is loudest/richest from a small minority of the world, but at least that's better than an even smaller minority of the world (i.e. SCOTUS).

  7. Re:Sample size? on Gene Found That May Affect IQ in Males · · Score: 1

It _would_ be interesting if this gene was correlated with the upbringing as you suggested. If your father had this gene you may be more likely to be in a poorer environment for reversing the effects this gene would have on your IQ. So, it could have a negative feedback response on you progreny which would accumulate over time. This might account for the significant difference between the two groups (the difference grew over generations). This might also account for why there was a wide variation in IQ of people that express the gene. Maybe a lot of the parents overcame whatever defiencies this gene would have on the lifestyle they could give their kids.

This is slightly off-topic, but I was wondering if anyone is aware of any generic web-frontends for MySQL? I can write something pretty easily that's not generic, but I'm particularly interested in something for a novice user who doesn't want to program anything. Something that can generate reports based on specified queries, that was customizable, etc.

  17. Re:Really? on Innovation Getting Slower? · · Score: 2, Informative

Take a look here for an answer to your questions. I don't think it surprising that innovation per billion people has decreased, because a large proportion of people that have ever lived are on the planet right now. We'd have to be _really_ innovative (exceed population growth). In the last hundred years or so, we have TV, phones, radio, airplanes, rockets, nukes, computers, the Internet, etc., so I think the number of innovations per year have certainly increased. The per billion quantity will throw everything out of whack especially when much of them are in under-developed countries.

And that alone should impress employers. I think an employer would care little, if as the grand-parent stated, that the boss just resented him leaving. That seems like the most plausible explanation (from the new employer's perspective). Clearly, he was a good and reliable employee otherwise they would have gotten rid of him long ago.
