Great eye candy, but I still have no reason to switch from Gnome. I'ld like to see a poll of how many people have switched from KDE to Gnome and vice versa...
So,
It would be something like CO2 cartridges for my BB gun or a cheap paintball gun? I would think that they would need to be recycled if this were the case. That would be a huge waste. Not to mention that they probably wouldn't let these things on airplanes. (That is, if they are flamable.) I don't think that we will ever see something like this in the future. I couldn't even board my last flight unless I handed over my cigarette lighter.
This is very cool, and has the geek portion of my brain getting excited. However, I don't think it's anywhere near what a good DJ can do. I love a great DJ who can read the people, and cary you on a trip throughout the whole night of dancing. Er, I think I just said way too much about myself. You don't have to be an etard to love techno or dancing. You just need large amounts of RedBull and vodka.;P
It's really good that they don't have M$'s PR people. Otherwise, we would have all shutdown Napster, and probably have been happy about it. The artists are obviously hearing thier fans (well, maybe not Metallica), and the fans are NOT happy. None of these people are invincible, and hopefully, corporate America will get a smack upside the head. Besides, Kazaa still rocks.;)
I was talking out of personal experience. FreeBSD has always seemed to run much more stable for a server. Also I love the security on FreeBSD. Not to mention the ease of installing new apps from the ports directory. That's just freakin genius. I have alot of friends that run FreeBSD for their desktops, I'm just still a fan of linux there. I guess it's backwards from what normal people feel, but the server environments that I've built just have me feeling this way... Maybe it's just all the code red and old pizza I just downed...
Regardsless of what some reviewer comes up with, I have just found that they each do something specific. For servers, I would run FreeBSD. All of the daemons are ported, and the security is great. For my desktop, it's linux all the way. I think this is comparing apples to oranges.
With a thing of this size, it should be visible by the naked eye, right? I really like astronomy, but I've never gotton too much into it. Could I spot this thing with binoculars if that thing makes it into space?
Does anyone know if there are any computer museums with these on display? I haven't hit the computer museum in Boston for a while, I'ld go to see this.
"I keep saying it, if one company would make this cheap it wouldn't be just a toy. Cost is the main problem with wireless, and why I haven't adopted it. "
Well, 802.11b stuff from Linksys is DIRT cheap right now at Staples. Their AP's with the built in DSL/Cable router are $100.00 cheaper than last month! I'm buying as many as possible. I'm posting right now, using my ap, and I must say I love it, worth every penny! Besides, there's nothing like reading/. while on the can.;)
I just got up, and saw this on the news. My parents flew out to Arizona this moring (from Logan), but it took 35 minutes for the freakin news station to say where the flight had originated. My parents flew American Airlines. Thanks to the slashdot team for posting the info. I feel horibly for any people who lost their lifes in this today. I pray that this was not yet another terrorist attack.
I don't really care who invented, I'm just glad they did. Otherwise, we wouldn't be reading slash from work, and getting paid! Damn, I love the life of Network Engineering. Now if only I could have a years supply of Funny Bones!
This is suprising. At the Itech show in Boston, they weren't very strict. I was supposed to setup for the show on 9/11. It was held at the Boston WTC. This was obviously not done. They closed that day, and the show was a month later. I don't see why they would think that a Comdex show would be targeted.
I'm glad to see your happy. Even though I always vote, I don't seem to have any Mass reps that I'm proud of. I really dislike Mass's reps, but I do have to admit, I was happy that last time I wrote them, someone replied. If we actually pursue this, I can just immagine, "Click Here to download SP1" All Mass Resident click here "Massachusetts Users". We will have to download 4 different parts of the same SP...
Yeah,
This is really redundant. I posted before any posts were showing. You guys should take it easy on some of the first posts. This wasn't a AC doing FP's this was an actual question. Thanks.
Not to be a party pooper, but 5 miles of cable, really isn't that impressive. We ran 3 at the ISP I used to work for. Not to mention all the fiber running from the foxbox. 5 miles of round ide cables would really be cool...

AMD And THG update

Having installed quite a few servers with AMD's I'm going to have to say you're wrong. I've installed several mainstream servers with AMD's that are still runnigs.
I just finished my first week with my AMD 1.4 TBird. I've had to make a lot of changes to the system, as I was having heat issues. I rely on sites like THW and AnAndTech, but now I'm confused. I read that story THW did, and I downloaded the "AMD" video. Why is it so freakin hard to find out the truth about something?
Carnivore's reply is accurate. Also, if you MBM or some other monitoring software, there are options to run a specified program if the CPU core reaches a certain temp. All you have to do, is set it up to run a program that will shutdown your computer. If you in Winblows land there's a program to do this in just about every version (You may need the Resource Kit for some OS's). And if you can't do this with a shell script or a perl script in Unix, than you should probably not be running a Unix box.
My new AMD 1.4 box runs very hot, however the weight of my HS isn't the issue, it's the noise of the freakin fan. 7k RPMs make quite a bit of noise...
Not necessarily. Some thermal compounds are fine to touch. I don't make a habit of it, but I highly doubt touching Arctic Silver would do any damage to you. It would just help your hand dissipate heat better...
More serious would be an adhesive thermal compound. This would deffinitely be a more sticky situation. Er, I hate my humor.
I can only assume that this will become more common in our everyday lives. It's not enjoyable, but it's probably going to be this way for a while. Some companies (biomedical research, atomic research) should have had strigent security before. I don't beleive that people should loose rights that the constitution grants us, however some of these things are for the greater good of every human alive. It's too bad that Russia can't follow suit. I think that the US is probably a last resort for terrorists to try and obtain dangerous materials, but I guess it's a possibility. I don't even want to think about all of the hazardous materials that the Russian's have lost. I think it was just a few months ago that/. ran a story about Microsoft SQL loosing track of Russian plutonium or something like that. Until we have a better handle on what the terrorist currently have at their disposal, this is only going to be more common. At the local Walmart in my town, the State Attorney General, and the Police and Fire Chiefs, made them remove 300,000 rounds of ammo, and several pounds of black powder. As a hunter, this is an inconvience. It doesn't make any sense to me, as New Hampshire is 15 minutes away, and has very lax gun laws. I guess this is just a hysteria that will have to die down.
I highly doubt that the FBI could pull this off. First of all, the budget for something like this would be huge to say the least... Secondly, the FBI doesn't have the engineering staff to support something of this size. Your talking about putting huge clusters at all of the NAPS. Even then they won't get info that doesn't pass through that NAP. What's going to stop terrorists from using a VPN? This sounds like a major waste of money, and a flawed solution...
Do any/. readers have one of these? I'ld love to see a benchmark of one of these, and a similair sparc or something. Maybe TomsHardware could pull something like this off? Anyway, the price would be worth the geek factor.
