Further, I would think that Sarbanes-Oxley would include a provision for things like hardware that could be updated through software. Other people have pointed out that software is updated all the time with added features for free. This does seem different to me though; Apple is adding a hardware feature, even though they're doing it without any physical modification to the device. What about when some iPods were suddenly able to do voice recording through a firmware update? I think that would fall into the same situation.

Regardless, I expect this patch to show up on the torrent networks within hours of its release. I also expect a lot of people to try installing it on older hardware, just to see if it works.

You're probably right, I have a 1.5ghz Powerbook with 1gB of RAM, pretty much the same as your mac mini, except for the 5400rpm hard drive. Apple fucked up with those substandard drives, so a good firewire drive (7200rpm) and another stick of RAM probably would speed up the system quite a bit.

I feel like Apple's pro machines are getting a lot better (even the new iMacs are really well-built), but their new low end is slipping. The Macbooks and Mac-minis don't even have real video cards anymore.

If you're pin-wheeling a lot, I recommend opening up Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities), a GUI front-end for top and see what's running. If you prefer just running top, fire up the terminal and do so. If it's the same process that's causing you to hang (applications that aren't responding are listed in red), then do some investigating about that process. As much as I hate to say it, you might have just gotten a wonky install, and backing up and reinstalling might work some of this out. There's an "archive and install" option on the install disk that does that pretty well for you.

I'm a big fan of MenuMeters ( http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/ ) for showing different loads on my system.

Also, Apple's website has a huge knowledge base about all the internals of the system. There's a good amount on specific differences between what they do and general linux principals.

Seeing eye dogs are bred and trained to be friendly; they tend not to bite people. You're probably right that people get bitten by seeing eye dogs more often than blind hunters hurting someone, but this is only by virtue of blind hunters being a rare phenomenon.

Where is it exactly that everyone must hunt to be a part of society?

Finally, certainly more people are hurt by cars than guns, but my point was that restricting access to certain activities to sighted people is not about persecution, but about safety for everybody. I don't have any problem with blind people shooting at a shooting range because that's a much controlled and safe environment.

Grocery shopping and walking down the sidewalk are required for participation in society. Hunting is not. Also, the set of circumstances where a blind person shopping could result in someone getting seriously injured are a lot harder to believe than for a blind hunter.

We don't allow blind people to drive cars, either, but no one thinks this is prejudiced or an erosion of human rights.

We still hold children and teens responsible for their actions. As soon as children are allowed to speak they are disciplined (mildly) for their wrongdoings. Teenagers suffer more consequences for misdeeds: expulsion from school and juvenile justice. Just because we don't consider people under eighteen responsible enough for some things (like voting, owning property, etc) doesn't mean that they can't be (and more to the point, aren't) held responsible for their actions.

Also, you brought up argument versus discussion. You [the parent post] seem to have missed some of the subtleties of both my and unapersson's posts. Unapersson presented a thought for discussion:

"The industry always wants to have it both ways though. They want to create this desire to have the hottest new things they are producing at the time. While pushing this desire at a group that doesn't necessarily have the resources to buy what they're demanding they "must have". So this whole sharing situation is a natural result of that marketing."

For the purposes of further discussion, I turned that into a possible justification for piracy. From there I made my point about personal responsibility, which I have partly elaborated on for your benefit in this post. After that I tossed in a few of my ideas about reasons for pirating music that seemed more apt.

Finally, in your penultimate sentence you accuse unapersson of arguing that "you are [I am] either stupid or disingenuous". Unapersson made a point, but said nothing about people who hold different views. I didn't get that idea from that post anywhere.
