  1. Hardly... on Apple's Missed Opportunity With Leopard Delay · · Score: 5, Insightful

Windows users will stick with XP, there's no evidence to say that they would give up on Windows and get a Mac. Firstly they would need to buy new hardware, the obvious choice is to go to Linux since you can keep your hardware.

  2. Use web standards on Standard Web Fonts 'Updated' In Vista · · Score: 1

Then you won't have to test your site with all the browsers known to man.

If the brower doesn't render standards properly then make them fix it.

  3. Microsoft is the cancer not GPL on Microsoft Planning to Buy Open Source Companies? · · Score: 1

Microsoft is the company that buys out all sorts of companies, abandoning support and development of the product.

They bought Blue Ribbon back when I was doing music on the Amiga and abadoned their highly innovative sequencer product Bars and Pipes professional (they were pipeline based, alter MIDI data in realtime). How is a buyout good for consumers? having a commercial product become open source at least stops the product being abandoned.

  4. Ban it for other reasons on Cellphone Use On Planes Coming Soon? · · Score: 1

Nothing worse than trying to get some rest on a flight and having an idiot next to you talking on the phone all the way.

  5. Performance impact on Apple Adds Memory Randomization To Leopard · · Score: 0, Redundant

All these secure features are welcome, but only if you can switch them off.

If I'm using a Mac for professional audio work and it's never connected to the internet then it doesn't need such high security. The performance impact of anti-malware software on low latency audio can be pretty vast.

  6. Re:3 ideas on Best Way To Teach Oneself Math? · · Score: 1

But at the same time, if you keep doing something then you get better at it.

There is a lot of evidence that the brain changes to suit the tasks it is given. Hence these brain training games.

I would certainly play some of these brain training games in your spare time, while the maths in them is simple, there's memory development in there too. It all helps keep your brain active.

  7. Availability is still poor in the UK on Wii 'Popularity Bubble' to Burst? · · Score: 1

Given the glut of PS3s and XBox 360s and lack of Wiis, I would say it doesn't look like it's declining just yet.

It appeal to the more casual gamers, the Wii's titles are different to other systems. People who have a Wii aren't interested in spending hours alone playing online games.

  8. 130 million is nothing on New Head of EMI Says 'Embrace Digital Music or Die' · · Score: 3, Insightful

In the UK we're struggling from huge consumer debt and massive house prices, 130 million can be the loss due to people not bothering to buy CDs simply because they need to pay their mortgage and debt off.

If the music companies were feeling the pinch they wouldn't be making expensive music videos.

  9. Lies, lies and statistics on Linux on the Desktop Doubles in 2007 · · Score: 3, Insightful

Where do these people get their statistics from?

If I buy a branded PC I buy windows, if I then download and replace windows this doesn't get recorded. All that is recorded is the sale of Windows.

Market share is hard to analyse, I would imagine the Windows share is less than people think, purely because there's so many extraneous Windows licences sold.

  10. No working phone, no call revenue on Class-Action Lawsuit Over iPhone Locking? · · Score: 1

Given Apple gets 40% of call revenue, you would think they would do their best to ensure it works?

  11. Re:You know what? on Apple Platform Lock-Ins, A 3rd Party Dev's Opinion · · Score: 1

They can make money by providing enjoyment for people, instead of focussing purely on the money and squeezing every last drop of money from someone's wallet.

Even Microsoft let 3rd party developers write for their phones, in fact their phones would be lacking without them.

  12. Re:The Free WiFi makes the WiFi portion useful on Does the UK iPhone Plan Add Up? · · Score: 1

But for £6.99 a month you can get this service from The Cloud anyway.

  13. Lunacy on Universal Offers iPod-Resistant Music · · Score: 1

That would be like making music that can't be played on Windows.

iPods are the most popular music player.

  14. Logic Studio on Is Apple Doing All It Can to Beat Vista? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Indeed, there's simply nothing to compete with Ableton Live and Logic Audio/Studio on Linux either.

The stability of the audio playback justifies the purchase of a Mac alone. Not to mention that Logic Studio is immensely powerful and only costs a few hundred dollars when it used to be a thousand.

Those who like to be creative and not mess around with techie issues all day would be wise to forget Vista, you'll never get it working reliably as a music composition and recording workstation. Especially considering Microsoft throttle the network bandwidth to favour audio playblack, so that totally throws out the possibility of using gigabit networking and node software (where you use an additional computer for more processing power).

  15. Re:A gated suburban hell on Apple Cuts Off Linux iPod Users · · Score: 1

I would take Apple over Microsoft any day, while Apple screws up now and then, at least their products are user focussed. Microsoft's products are all aimed at pleasing business users and government/commercial agencies.

  16. Not strictly true on What's the Right Amount of Copy Protection? · · Score: 1

Some copy protection stops the casual pirate. The people who don't know much about computers and may email your app to friends.

But using dongle protection is pretty stupid, especially when in some cases it cripples performance (Steinberg's use of dongle copy protection on Cubase has been rumoured to do that).

  17. Manufacturing defects on Retailer Refuses Hardware Repair Due To Linux · · Score: 1

This is a manufacturing defect, may even be a design fault.

While it's true hardware can be damaged by software (imagine if the fan control was in software and the software didn't work), this is a pathetic case of the sort of rubbish you get from PC World.

I would never buy a PC from there. I did buy a Mac Mini and it was used.

  18. Welcome to Linux.... on Vista Pirates To Get "Black Screen of Darkness" · · Score: 1, Offtopic

Years ago people would have rushed out and bought Windows. But these days people are more interested in Linux than back in 2001 when XP arrived.

  19. Re:Could age be a factor? on Brain Differences In Liberals and Conservatives · · Score: 1

    Liberals think first then shoot?

Republicans shoot first ask questions later?

You've only got to see the serious lack of understanding Bush had of Iraq to realise that Republicans don't really think too hard about much.

They thought all Iraqi's were pretty much the same and they all disliked Saddam.

  20. Is there an opposite to FUD? on de lcaza calls OOXML a "Superb Standard" · · Score: 4, Interesting

Maybe the opposite is Uninformed Praise and Optimism (UPO).

It seems he hasn't read about how you can "look but not touch" when it comes to the internal data. An expert in the Office format recently proved you could modify the xml in the new Office formats but Office would complain and not load it.

The fact that it's XML seems to only benefit the world in one way, it compresses nicer.

  21. Bye bye USP on Google Mulling Video Ads In Search Results · · Score: 1

The clean minimal look was always Google's unique selling point. The fact that that're going to add clutter and bandwidth wasting junk is the start of the end of Google's popularity.

  22. No more listings for US users you mean... on No More TV Listings For MythTV Users · · Score: 4, Informative

There are Mythtv users outside of the US. In the UK the listings are carrying on as normal.

  23. Milliseconds? who cares? on Opera 9.5 Beats Firefox and IE7 As Fastest Browser · · Score: 0, Redundant

Surely the most important thing about your browser is that is is secure, renders pages well and doesn't crash every 5 minutes.

I can understand why Opera is fast, they have a lot of experience in the embedded market. Doesn't make it the best choice for the desktop though.

  24. It's more to do with the heat on What's Wrong With Lithium Ion Batteries? · · Score: 1

Lithium Ion batteries don't like getting hot, once they do they go into meltdown and the chemicals become unstable.

Panasonic recently developed a safer battery which has heat insulation.

  25. Re:blaming the quality of the music... on Interesting Admissions From Record Industry · · Score: 1

It's simply the need for instant results. The major labels don't nurture or let people improve, they expect popularity and large sales instantly.
