  10. Re:Wow translating their software to other languag on Microsoft Plans to Create Local Language Software · · Score: 1

Microsoft only does work on their products if it is commercially viable. In the past making their products available in different languages of which sales were likely to be small made it not viable (don't forget they'll have to hire translators who can do simple development).

But if a rival product gets established in that market it could likely take over, this is what they're worried about, so the potential losses in business make it commercially viable to create this translation tool. However there's a big difference between having an open-source app which is ready to run and having to spend hours translating software.

There's just too many nooks and crannies for stuff to hide in with Windows. At least with Linux you can boot into runlevel one (single user) which will stop X starting and other services. Once you're at a prompt you can remove any viruses using your normal shell. Firstly to install a very basic Linux system which will allow you to get onto the Internet and download all the latest packages.

Second use is to install a system from the CD tailored to your needs.

In both these cases I feel Debian's installer requires too much fiddling around. What it needs is menu with "Typical role for this installation" and options like:

    [] Desktop computer
    [] Web Server
    [] Database Server
    [] Minimal install
    [] Custom

The custom option would allow you to setup the packages you require and allow you to load one of the presets to base your custom selections on.

Also why can't the installer be a bit more intelligent and read the current disk layout and make some clever suggestions?

You're not an office user who wants their desktops to be easily migrated to a new OS.

Such a migration involves looking at:

The availability of software for the new platform.

    File formats.

Compatibility with current hardware and connectivity with site services like printing, exchange server.

    Porting of internal software tools.

Drivers can be hard to source for Linux, plus there isn't a heck of a lot of applications people currently use on Windows that are also available for Linux. So companies migrating have to see if there are alternatives to their current software, fairly often there are alternatives but the proprietary file formats make all their past work inaccessible. Hence why Munich were going to use VMWare for some users.
