  1. Re:So what happens if you already have it? on FCC Rules Telcos Need Not Provide Naked DSL · · Score: 1

What you have is unbundled DSL lines -- and yes, you are grandfathered in. In such you will NOT be allowed to make absolutely ANY changes to those DSL lines. Disconnect, change carriers, anything -- and to get DSL again you WILL have to get a POTS line.

I had a unbundled DSL line originally with Ameritech, then bought by SBC. I also happened to have a ISDN line with the same company(s). I found SBC's service even more questionable than Ameritech's on the DSL line and disconnected the circuit shortly after wireless broadband was in the area through multiple providers (ah, finally, CHOICE :). In the interim I did try to get DSL service re-established with another carrier (ANY carrier other than SBC :) -- and NOBODY could touch the unbundled circuit ... NOR could they bundle to either ISDN # (which I found to be completely ridiculous).

I was required to get a POTS line to get DSL. Period. It didn't matter that I already had dial-tone with the lock-in carrier through ISDN. They simply wanted more $$$.

The answer was obvious and simple. Keep the 5Ghz antenna giving me a solid 10Mbit synchronous Internet connection and disconnect ISDN after porting the numbers to VoIP (once they were legally forced to do so :).

So now SBC gets $0, and I have a heck of a lot less trouble...

  2. Job Costing - 101 on New York Court Says Telecommuters Must Pay NY Tax · · Score: 1

My rule of thumb -- Jobs are taxed based on where they are located. Employees (_employer_) may need to pay an additional "tax", for the duration of the job, to the LOCAL [Union], if applicable. In most cases [NOT] as contracting with the Local in the appropriate field and hiring enough % of employees from the Hall for that job covers the "tax". Employees are taxed [income] based on where they LIVE. Add local County and Municipality based taxes as appropriate (and yes, I see THAT all the time).

All I see happening is NY having litigation with a LOT of various local governments -- probably a-joining states. I done jobs in of and [mostly] out of NY. Not a NY based company and have NY based employees -- who also rarely happen to actually work IN the state of NY. Heck, they're home maybe 2 months of the year total (now go add up YOUR weekends, holidays, random days off). Does this mean they DON'T have to pay the NY tax, but I can tax them at a lower tax rate of the home office? Or [pick a job site in whichever state with the most spent time]?

They're trying to open a NASTY can of worms that'll bit them back. If my company was a NY based on the border ... I certainly would think of moving it down the road...

For me, Un*x was a way of life -- and a Linux box has always been accessible. Sure, you could do the SAME with Windows, but I tend to forget about my computers -- they just work, and I digress. :) The point being -- this device makes such setups that much easier to sell with a combined product/service and NOT have the headache of the computer (Windows) not working. Less wasted time and $$$ all around IMHO. :)

I have serial hookups to the X10 device (home and offices), alarm system hookups (*I* get pages before the police are typically even called by central-station, thankfully rare and so far always false :), along with logging and control of various phone systems. Neither phone line [Internet] has gone down for any length of time since 2002 -- my logs show twice in that time frame with each being under 8 hours.

I literally NEVER have to reset my router, antenna [Internet connection], or anything else. Of course it's a "mom & pop" type ISP that really know what they're doing. Sure, I've tried Comast's cable [garbage] and SBC's DSL ranks [stinks] right up there too.

There's a LOT of logic behind how Unix systems work -- and considering the concept/usage is much older than Microsoft I see it as being rather well thought out and mature. It becomes so obvious when dealing with trying to fix something on XP.

Microsoft may be a 800 pound gorilla, but IBM is still a 8,000 pound monster that is going Linux [and still pissed off]. After recently comparing OS/2 to XP side by side I understand. :)

Of course there's a reason (in our organizations) that as of 2000 it was decided to REMOVE Windows from the mix and migrate all users to either Linux or OS X. I myself [IT admin] use OS X at home for a reason. Others will follow.

It's simple really -- in personal consulting I charge $35/hr for IT work if it's Linux/BSD/OS.X/QNX/Netware based. The rate changes to $70/hr for de-virus'ing your system [again]. Clients quickly learn what the Mac-mini is all about...

Yeah, Microsoft is dying -- and unfortunately (for the US) it'll be a slow death. IMHO the US had better wake up or we'll technologically have out shorts eaten by the rest of the world as they continue their migration away from Windows.
