Sorry pals, but this is ridiculous. This kind of attitude is precisely why several years ago I started my own copyright war. I have not cared about copyrights and feel free to do whatever I want with the information I get. It started when I realized that I could not use my laptop to watch DVD's I rented while traveling in Europe (the matSHITa drive had extra layers of protection that AnyDVD could not break). Continued with the realization that DVD's bought there could not then be played (without hacking my devices) in my US system. Where is MY right to use my devices to see my bought/rented dvds? I paid for the devices and DVDs, but some screwed up "rights" system does not allow me to use them without going through some hoops: hack the system and then get them back. You know what? Now that I have a hacked system I may as well go all the way and disregard the producer's rights as they disregarded mine.
Seeing how all made-in-china stuff tends to have lead in them... perhaps they can advertise this feature (superman cannot see through your china-lego bricks).
This is absolutely pathetic. Who's fault it is that the person even drives while drinking coffee or holding it between her legs? I think she got what she bargained for...
... this new device will only display shows that were personally approved by Steve (OH! MAGNIFICENT) Jobs and it will be locked down "tight". Two hours after release, hackers would have figured out how to install SSH and some software manager and there will be a nice microcosmos of hacked applications for "jailbroken" devices. Then apple will release firmware updates to try to brick these devices, and so on and so forth... After a while itunes will sell applications for this device, etc, etc. It is just a large-screen iphone, eh?
Nevertheless, a simple geometrical argument shows that it is ALWAYS more efficient (less amount of material used) to have a flat panel (if correctly oriented then so much better). The cylindrical shape must be a requirement of manufacturing, and they are trying to sell it as a good thing, but it is obviously not.
It was a mini black hole that eat through the insulation! No question about it... now it is busy devouring the Alps, then Europe (sell sell sell all your Euros, now!). It will then gradually expand and eat Wall Street (wait! it has happened already!). The world will come to an end before they can fix this machine.
There are consequences to your actions, my friend. And calling your principal a pedophile in public should get you suspended. Thinking otherwise is absolutely crazy, even for/. Come on!
On a USB device? Why would a USB device need direct access to memory (esp. when the iphone is not a fast device itself)??? Complete and utter nonsense.
The beam is on... but no collisions yet.

Ditto. The beam is on, but there are no countercirculating particles yet so no super-duper-high-energy physics yet. We still need to wait a few weeks for that (and the world to end). I keep telling all females that we need a big orgy before the world ends...
Donkey Kong's success caught the eye of Universal Studios, which felt the character was a direct infringement of its film King Kong. Nintendo was taken to court by the studio, but the judge ruled in Nintendo's favour after it was brought to light that in a previous court case Universal fought to prove that the character of King Kong was within the pubic domain so it could make its movie. Nintendo was awarded $1.8 million from Universal.
Quite amazing how media companies want to have their cake and it it too... Unbelievable: to sue someone for infringement for something they fought to be in the public domain (they were presumably the original infringers, eh?). This is one of the (many) reasons I am in a war against media companies. I have been violating their copyrights as much as I can. If they do not respect the rights of others I won't respect theirs either.
Sure, but just claiming "i was ordered to do it" is no excuse for being an a...hole. YOU would face assault charges, you know that? (and your boss, aka the mall, would be sued for countless $$).
You have written exactly my thoughts. Thank you. This argument that the Bush administration loves to make "Guantanamo is not in the US thus the constitution does not apply" is obviously absurd. If the border/Guantanamo/Area51/... is not in the US jurisdiction, then all acts by the US agents there are 100% illegal and confiscating someone's possessions is an act of piracy. (I wonder with so many pirates... why isn't global warming coming down:-) )
He's was a very very very bright person, and very knowledgeable about science but he got the idea of the balloonist very wrong. Yes, on the moon you weight about 6 times less than on earth, but the buoyancy force on the balloon which keeps you afloat is exactly equal to the weight of the displaced air. This means this force is also 6 times less (for a given volume), hence you cannot get away with using a small balloon. In fact, in the article he mentions that the air pressure on the tubes was 1/2 of that at sea level on earth (at a higher concentration of O2 vs. N2, but these two molecules have similar weights). All in all, you'd probably need a balloon with a volume about 2x bigger on the moon than on earth. Sorry, I do not have the time to properly scale the weight of the skin of the balloon given its different size, but I will assume they can also use the "advanced C60 nanotubes" (whatever that might be) to make it really light. Overall a nice and interesting story, even more so to find that even a genius like ACC can make mistakes!
Just google "apple superdrive slow burn" and see that this is NOT anecdotal evidence. As for MatSHITa (that's what appears in the disk info, and I know it is matsuSHITa), they are the manufacturers also of some of the slimmest DVD units found in compact notebooks (like my Sony Vaio VGN SZ110) and I do not see why I should respect a hardware company that goes out of its way to make sure that I cannot read DVD's from other regions (i.e. no DVD region free software manages to get them to work, and they encrypt the firmwares to avoid hacking). It is a LAPTOP, I am supposed to be able to travel and use my machine to see DVD's I buy/rent.
Yes, a respectable company indeed.
Apple's hardware is a mixed bag. The MacPro is wonderful (I have an 8 core machine), but the imac (alum. 20") is a piece of crap. The "superdrive" (made by MatSHITa, a well deserving name) claims to burn DVD's at 8X, but can barely scratch 3x (but apple just says "buy dvd+r from us and it will work at 8x, CRAP! they may even have put a screwed-up firmware in there). The screen is horrible, even though they advertise it is wonderful. Apple is a deceiving company, like many others, the problem is that if you like their OS (which is quite decent) then you are stuck with their inferior hardware.
You seem to have missed something: "These days" implies that the poster was referring to reasonably modern hardware. Trotting out a machine that is litteraly obsolete* as a case study proves nothing other than that Vista doesn't play nice on old hardware. Granted, it probably doesn't play all that nice at the lower end of modern hardware either.
*obsolete in the sense that none of the parts you mention are still being sold. You simply cannot buy a new machine with those specifications any more. Hell, the GFX card alone has been off the market for at least 4 years, and is barely comparable to even integrated GFX, never mind a cheap $50 low end card.
If you want to prove that Vista runs like a dog on reasonably modern hardware, at least use reasonably modern hardware as a reference.
Yet another example showing vista to contribute to global warming: WASTE! A machine like the parent mentioned is perfectly fine to run most applications (as shown by the parent: he's running quite a few useful things there). Merely loading vista requires dumping the machine and buying a new one. Guess what: it costs A LOT OF ENERGY to produce a computer (or any other thing, pretty much). Vista is the pits.
Moko sounds exactly like moco, which in spanish (one of the most used languages in the world) means snot... Not a very good name, eh? Folks, when creating a brand name for a product to be released worldwide, you have to check these things so that you do not end up with names like Ford Pinto (small penis in Brazil) or Mitsubishi Pajero (wanker in some latin american countries).
Who said that hacking an iphone is circumvention of digital protected files? I hacked my iphone so that I could load any application I want and to use it with the operator I chose (t-mobile, no contract, thank you). Please again: tell me where in the law this is said to be illegal? I know this is slashdot, but come on! Be more exact with your statements.
Please please please explain why it is an ILLEGAL unlock. As far as I am concerned, congress has not yet been bought so badly as to make it ILLEGAL to hack a device you own... Where did you learn your law?
My time is worth far more than $8 an hour, so even if it only takes 1 hour to pirate a DVD, then it really is a huge waste.
You watch as the dvd is being ripped/compressed/burned? And I thought the computer did it on its own... Ignorant me:-)
(it only takes 5 minutes of a person's time to achieve the r/c/b of a DVD)
Now that particle physics is essentially dead they are trying to come up with some wacko idea that sounds cool so they can get some funding. NO should be the answer. This does not cut it for many reasons:
1) There are gazillions of neutrinos passing through us coming from the sun and all the stars. How are we (or any other civilization) going to compete with those with a meager particle accelerator?
2) Neutrinos are almost non-interacting with matter so they are extremely difficult to detect. Tell me how you are going to detect ENOUGH of them, coming from a relatively low intensity source and still be able to get a good s/n ratio?
Complete non-sense if you ask me (and I am a physicist).

Doubtful there will be so much. A good wash with distilled water, followed by IPA and about 1 week drying will be perfect.
