It could be worse, at least the name is more memorable than mp3 for low tech users. IMHO people use too many TLAs.
I actually think this is valid point, but I want to add this: Although there is nothing to stop ogg, there is also little to push it. It will be a marketing war, like VHS vs. betamax, as joe public will not see it as upgrade like VHS vs. DVD for example. Whether there is anyone with enough motivation + money to push through will wait to be seen. I'm not even going to venture an opinion on this one!
Is there an option for moderating a story -1 flamebait? I predict this story will generate no useful discussion, just a string of 'ogg rocks/wma sucks' and 'anything bitrate less than 2048 sucks'
You may be close there. I suspect the major increase in revenue for AOL etc from a high profile anti spammer push will be from the barely competant users, who have no real ideas about spam but are terrified of their small children receiving pr0n emails. They will back AOL etc with their cash, switching from smaller ISPs/CPs and allowing their kids back on the 'intarweb'
unfortunatly it is a Catch 22 situation. Since we don't vote, there is little point in doing _anything_ for us. And unless there is more information and alternatives for me, I will not vote on the internet, my mobile, my digital tv, by post or by phone. bring on the 'give us a real choice' box.
who doesn't? there are more hotmail accounts than people! And it may work as an incentive for them - I for one would consider using my hotmail account for things that I currently use my lycos account for, if the blizzard of spam were gone. Although they would need to put up the storage space too to compete with lycos.

It is our duty to reward them for making a stand for spammers everywhere. These free items will come in handy for filling the extra space in those big houses.
There is an argument for saying this is not a dupe. The article concerns the review, not the release of the product. But then I have an argument for most things...
This is largely missing the point, at least as far as UK voters are concerned. I am one of an increasing number of voters who carefully considers all of the options before deciding not to vote.
For example in the forthcoming local elections, where this system of online voting is being trialled, I have spent some time researching the three possible boxes to mark, Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrats, and discovered the following things: -None of the standing candidates for my area has published any information on their policies, or even made any statements regarding their intentions should they get elected. -Only one of the candidates even has a published telephone number, and none have published email addresses. All are legally required to publish their street addresses, and only one candidate for my ward actually lives in my ward. -My local political parties make little or no effort to interact with the community. Their online presence is laughable - the local Conservative party has a very poor site with no details on their policies, and no mention of the forthcoming elections, let alone any details of the candidates. The Labour party's site is worse and the Lib Dems have no site.
In summary, I have the following choices: -Vote for one of the parties based on their national polices (none of the 3 are appealing). -Vote for Labour based on their running of the local council to date (a joke). -Pick one at random. -Spoil the ballot paper -Not vote. Since spoiling the paper (for example writing 'I do not consider any of these worth voting for') merely creates a statistic ignored by the government and the media, my only option is not to vote. IIRC published government research said that 21% of the electorate would be more likely to vote if voting were made easier by online voting etc. The government needs the address the remaing 79% who don't consider this would affect them. Across the UK just 30% of people vote in local elections. In my demographic (I am a 22 year old male) I suspect this is more like 1%, with the bulk of voters being 50+. Among my peers, I know of no-one who intends to vote, although many have considered it and investigated the options available.
Most Retakes For One Scene A sequence in Charlie Chaplin's City Lights (US 1931) took 342 takes to make. In the scene, a blind flower girl (played by Virginia Cherrill) sells a tramp a flower in the mistaken belief he is a wealthy tycoon.
WHO: City Lights (1931) WHEN: 1931 WHERE: USA WHAT: 342 takes
Jackie Chan's 1982 film is listed as 2900 on HK Flix and as 'hundreds' on TVGuide.com

One simple reason why Google have taken the lead is the focus shown by Yahoo on making their ideas pay back a profit. This policy has resulted in a switch of public opinion. People no longer want pages crammed with content covering every possible spectrum. The new generation of surfer can cope with the idea of a search engine, a news portal and a web-email provider on seperate sites, allowing them to choose the best of each. It's a bit like asking a hi-fi enthusiast whether he prefers an integrated system or a seperate cd-player, amplifier and speakers. The average surfer has grown up, and Yahoo has been left behind. Just my thoughts...
As a 'british liberal sick anti-gun bastard', I don't find your dearly loved right to be a attractive idea. Strict anti-gun laws do make our streets safer than yours. Surely your main need to carry a firearm is as a defenese against a violent society? Unless you are a drug dealer or mafia boss:)
In the UK, at least until recently, AOL ran the only unmetered dialup service that did not require a BT telephone line. In addition to that it was a fast, reliable and cost effective service. I hate the dialer as much as the next/. reader but the service was the best. I have now moved and have an excellent ADSL connection but for six months AOL was the best solution by far.
Why are most of the posts about the price of video cards vs. whole consoles? Is there anyone reading slashdot who really doesn't know this? And I'm guessing 90% of/.ers who want to run UT2003 on their systems, can anyway. I know I can, although my gaming rig is over a year old, 1.4Ghz/512mb/Geforce3 runs it fine.
I know there's always a %age who like to complain that their 5 year old system with the power of my new cell phone should run Doom III fine, but that's like me asking why my ageing VW can't win Formula 1 races. Can we just mod them down, let us gamers subsidise the AMD & nVidia research labs, and kick our ps2s under the bed after 1/2 hr of mortal kombat to return to our gorgoeus UT2003, mmorpgs, q3 mods or whatever we play until the sun comes up...

Sit them all down to a game of Civ2.
IIRC GW have a good mail order system.
But that may have changed since the days when I could field an unstoppable Elven army... sometimes.

It's less embarassing than publicly admitting that your mission relies on a superior Russian pencil.
Besides, after the war with Iraq, US financies are in a worse state than the Russian Space Programme.
The UK isn't even able to contribute half a pencil to this venture...
Besides wood is non-renewable resource. The environmentalists would be up in arms at the idea of two pencils.
