I almost hope that happens. Something like that would definately turn MANY semi-knowledgeable users as myself from Windows to Linux, and hopefully Linux would also improve. I'm currently not a Linux user, but I've tested Mandrake 9.1 briefly, and got it to do almost everything I could do in Windows; the only thing it lacked was the convenience and familiarity, so I'm sure I could switch if MS pulled a stunt like that.

Remote Desktop IS faster and simpler than VNC, yes. However, note that the "ask slashdot"-er is talking about fast user switching; he probably wants to have multiple persons using it at once. The Windows XP license does not allow this with remote desktop, and will not allow anyone to connect remotely if there is a person sitting at the computer, or someone is already connected. To have more people connected, you need to run Windows 2000 Terminal Server. Wonder if someone can hack Windows XP to allow multiple users. That'd be kewl. But obviously useless for most people, who only use it to access their own computer when they are away.

Oh, and by the way, there are also native Linux Windows Remote Desktop clients. My brother uses it at his job, and it's also bundled with probably multiple distros... I believe Mandrake 9.1 has it.

Slashdot linked to a guide for going to Japan and buying video games a while back, and it talked about getting old consoles and stuff. I think that going to Japan and getting a Famicom might be the easiest thing to do. I'm not sure what you mean by a "top-loading" variety, but I know that the Japanese one was different from the European one; more I don't remember. And the European NES cartridges looked like the American SNES cartridges. But I don't have that much clarity here, as much of this information comes from reading Nintendo Power (or Nintendomagasinet as it was known in Sweden) in the early '90's. I don't know how I'll be able to bring back all the stuff I want to bring back from Japan when I go there as an exchange student next year.

  11. Re:NES production to stop this year? on Former Nintendo Boss Talks GameCube, PSP · · Score: 1
Bah. All my (PAL) NES games worked very well and the cartridges were much less fragile than current CDs. Never had a NES game break. We used our NES from '89 to '97-'98, and we never had a problem like that, though the main gamepad did start to become somewhat worn out by the end.

Then my frickin' brother borrowed it to someone and was never eager to get it back. I've never forgiven him for that. Oh well. We had about 30 games then, and I have 3 CDs full of ROMs (eh, including, like, 100 SMB hacks and multiple versions of each title), a gamepad and TV-out on my computer now, so, like, that almost works as well.

But I believe the developers are Swedish, and they're politically very neutral. And if it IS balanced, it shouldn't piss off anyone.

Minidiscs not popular? I don't know how it is in the states, but here in Norway, they're very popular. They're pretty expensive, though; some people have paid up to 3000 NOK (~$400) for theirs, a lot considering I paid 550 NOK for my MP3CD player.

It's possible that the relatively low incomes that the working and middle classes in USA have, have lead to Minidisc players being too expensive for most people and their kids.

How important parts of the eco-system they are is not the deciding factor of whether we should kill them or not.
