Hey, move to Norway. My ISP, NextGenTel provides SHDSL at 1160 each direction for 998 NOK a month, which is... Oh. Hm. $140. But if you actually move to Norway you'll probably be paid more than you are in whatever job you may find; minimum wage is about $11.20. No restrictions at all when it comes to usage; the ISP has made an official statement that they don't give a rat's ass what their customers use the bandwith for. You can also get 1024/512 ADSL for about $77. I've got that, and I transfer about 170 GB a month. Good CS too; always been helpful.
I hate replying to myself, I really do. Howvever, I just looked at another part of the site, the part with information about the fiber optic connections, and it mentions this:
Other Networking or Configurations:
(i.e. Multiple Computers) Billed PER HOUR
$75 / Hour
WTF is up with that? I wouldn't believe it if I saw it posted, so check yourself!
Unlimited access accounts are for intermittent usage/connection to our system as long as you are physically in front of your computer and actively using the connection. This use includes sending and receiving mail, downloading files, surfing the web and using Internet Relay Chat (IRC).
I can attest to that. I've had people walk in on me a couple of times, and I'll have all the pr0n closed in like a moment. I prefer the move-down mouse gesture to open a new window, 'cause when I watch pr0n I've got like 20 tabs open.
As for browser innovation, Opera innovates; Mozilla copies, and MSIE doesn't do shit.
Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, and EVERYONE's stinks like shit.
That's your opinion, and you're entitled to have it. However, I disagree. As for your opinions on books stated in your post, I also disagree, as I think HHGG is an awesome work, and Tolkien is pretty good, although I *hate* Tolkien fanboys. Anyway, you do realize that under your statement, you believe that your opinion "stinks like shit", right? 'Cause, like, you are.
American pancakes are stupid; sure, they're kinda bigger than the French or British pancakes, but have you ever had DUTCH pancakes? Now THOSE are HUGE!
Ever played on unofficial Ultima Online shards? One shard I played on often had over 40 players, and I think it was running on a 600 MHz P3 on Windows 2K with a 384 kbps upstream that was also used for surfing. Less laggy and more stable than the official servers.
Yes, DivX is awesome. However, the Pro version is either payware or spyware, unless you use the illegal DivX 3.11a which is a crappy hack of an old WMV codec.
I encode lots of DivX files, mostly short music videos, and usually get 11 FPS or so per pass, and I do two passes so that's almost a 6:1 encoding/playback time ratio since I keep the original 29.97 FPS rate. And that's without ripping.
However, unless you have a crappy ISP with bandwith limits, you could try simply downloading the movies you own; most likely someone has made a good DivX version available. Though this is probably even less legal, as if you are using a P2P network you would also be uploading to other users who do not own the DVD legally.
I don't see a need for lossless compression. LAME MP3 with the r3mix preset sounds perfect to me, and anyone who thinks that they can tell a difference between that and CD audio is only saying that to impress people.
Ethernet isn't designed for real-time connections? Then why does it work so well to play games over?
BTW, what's up with autopr0n.com? It's been down, like, forever.
No. The point about DivX is high resolution without too much loss at small file sizes. I watch DivX all the time on my TV using TV-out. The only details I don't notice are the artifacts, which are usually very visible and distracting on my computer screen.
As I have loads of CDs with DivX movies, this would be very nice. Unfortunately, it's too expensive because I'm pretty much broke all the time. I assume it also doesn't have the video filters that my computer does, either.
It says it's MPEG-4 compatible. Does that mean that it plays XviD and WMV too? And does it play DivX 3.11 or just 4-5?
... Which is probably why eDonkey also compares the file sizes. Now what are the chances of creating a file with an EQUAL file size and an EQUAL MD4 hash? Now, I'm not certain about the differences between MD4 and MD5 and if MD4 is much less secure than MD5 (eDonkey uses MD4 because it's quicker when hashing 700 MB files and individual 9 MB chunks), but still, what would the chances be?
KaZaA, WinMX and such will take most damage from this move. For eDonkey/Overnet you can find links on websites and forums that add a file to your client in this format: filename|filesize|MD4. As these sites and forums (www.sharereactor.com, www.musicdonkey.net, www.filenexus.com and www.musicdonkey.org to name some of the most popular) are very reliable and don't seem to be in danger of closing down any time soon, I feel safe in knowing that tomorrow I'll still be able to get the latest stuff without any danger of downloading something that I don't want. Long live the Donkey!
Oh, come on; "indie film" and "teaser trailer" are not two terms that should appear together on the Slashdot mainpage. Can anyone say "slashdotted"?
Early fantasy books (ie inspired by Tolkien) actually labeled themselves as "Tolkienesque" works.
Mod parent up. Mldonkey is a client for the eDonkey network, which is really good. There are also compiled OS X binaries available. It's not as good as the windows client eMule, though (hoping for a Mac OS port soon!).
Did you ever read the article? And do you have any idea about the issue other than what you've read on Penny-Arcade or wherever? This isn't about cheating; this is about having the right to use ones hardware as one sees fit, and that hardly has to mean cheating.
Only 64k up? Damn, I bet a whole lot of you have to share your internet connections to send out all that spam.
Er... I guess that comes off as kinda prejudice, but I'm just joking around.
Found a redirect to this page looking at Google's cache of the page, and it looks like what he was talking about. I personally wouldn't like having the ctrl key there, although I don't think I'd miss the caps lock and windows keys. The numpad would be a different matter, though.
You can get 704/384 ADSL (actually it's 864/384 but they advertise likely actual speeds) for the price of 5 super sized Big Mac menus a month from my ISP. Latest news on the site says that 9/10 of their users are telling everyone about how great they are. And one of their advertising points is about how you'll be able to surf the web with just a flat fee, because the local calls you make to your dial-up ISP here in Norway cost money.
Or move to Korea, 'cause I hear you get like 8 mbps optic really cheap there.
Pretty hard to miss. The guy probably just couldn't get far enough from it to get a single picture with everything, so he had to take two and stick them together. If he wanted to fake it, he'd certainly make it less obvious.

Same TOS for all types of accounts. Basically, you being AFK while connected is not allowed... Idiotic rules.

Uhm, I'd think it comes from "borgar" as in the nynorsk world for "citizen", thus making the term mean "citizens' court".

300 "audiophiles" disagree with you.

Okay, now I'm scared!

Dude, Exult has existed for ages. It does everything that stuff does.
Please, no! I'm too young to be modded down. :-(
His rule was actually "If it's in the client, it's going to be exploited."

Capital letter. A capitol is a city.
You heard me. Move to Norway.
