It's a citizen's civic duty to ignore bad laws and challenge the evil within the system.
You can disagree, but you'll never see change unless somebody takes a stand. Civil disobedience gave Rosa Parks a seat on the bus just like everybody else, and, FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY, it empowered every single black person in America to do the same.
Ideas aren't property, even though the RIAA/MPAA wish to uphold the regime; copyright has its (limited) uses, but that doesn't make it morally imperative for every single citizen to follow along blindly.

It's good that you're thinking about the issue, but the fact is that downloading music isn't wrong - it might be illegal, depending on local laws (I live in Canada, different rules apply here) but it isn't wrong. That's an opinion. Follow your own best judgement.

There are many many many examples like these where stifling the author's expression impairs the author's ability to convey the concepts effectively.

The interactivity brings its own form of frustration relief when I'm forced to use the Flash.

On topic: of all the things this world needs least, I'd have to say that Flash development tools of any kind, regardless of source, are topping the list. Flash stinks. Flash is greedy, obnoxious, and yet people persist in manufacturing entire Flash websites!
Seriously, if Laila Ali didn't use it, i wouldn't even have the shitty player installed.

X is a single-threaded client/server application which provides windowing services and network transparency.

Since the terms 'client' and 'server' tend to be redefined every year or two by the Xfree team, nobody else really knows which is which any more. X interfaces directly with video drivers and also with the window managers.
The problems are fairly numerous and unfortunately difficult to fix:
Single-threaded X is forced to share its timeslice with every client (?) program, which leads even people like Linus to complain about GUI latencies on 4-way systems with top of the line hardware. Not so cool. Kernel 2.6 contains some hacks to kludge around this problem, but the underlying issue still hasn't (yet) been addressed. Considering Xfree's Design by Committee creed, it never will be fixed. You might say that X is rotten by design. You might more accurately state that X is 1980 technology, and wasn't meant to do the things that modern users expect as a matter of course (eg. 3D low latency, non-stuttering graphics). There isn't an elegant solution aside from ditching X entirely.

From the other end, the Xfree API is a big mess of kludges. Extensions have proven an excellent tactic to obfuscate and uglify code.

the JCP is NOT design by committee. the JCP is basically a suggestion box, and Sun decides what gets in, what gets ignored, & what's tossed out entirely. That's the strength of Sun's leadership; otherwise, we'd have another Xfree86 - a true example of committee design, and an excellent counter to Raymond's soapbox stunt.

Other points: ESR points to Red Hat's share price, compares it favourably to Sun's share price, and completely neglects to notice the correlation between the Number of Shares and Share Prices.
Also, please note that there is nothing to stop anybody from implementing a superior version of Java and giving that away for free, opening it up under the GPL, and leaving Sun to do whatever they like.
Hell, why doesn't ESR just write his own Java?
Open source methodology is superior to Sun's approach, and will inevitably lead to a much finer, more useful, and most of all a FREER product. At least that's what ESR says.

Honestly, I laugh at the clowns who think it's trivial to just comment out some "cruft" and spend a weekend recompiling KDE - or the kernel, with the new vulnerabilities always being discovered - and then copy over the .rc files and a handful of scripts (from about fifty locations, 'cuz nothing is in one place) then tar all that user data for backup before popping in that new kernel (cuz sometimes you just can't trust your funky filesystem). Some of those clowns then come here and whine about My Documents being in the wrong spot, when it's exactly one right-click away. Argh.
