It would be cooler if I could hear the "I have a scream" AAIIIIEEEEEHHH every time I gave Howard Dean a buck! I'd be there all day! Are you listening Howard?
If he was just sending the guy movies because he'd watched them and was done with them, the only laws he broke were of the Academy, not criminal laws. As it says in the first article, if he didn't know the movies were being copied, he's criminally innocent.
I can't really believe that Caridi really knew that his screeners were being uploaded to the Internet. He's an older guy, I wonder if he's even familiar with the Internet, much less file-sharing. Anyways, if they were guilty wouldn't he let this other guy know, so he could get rid of the evidence before the feds showed up?
It's pretty safe to say he won't be voting for the Academy Awards anymore.
OK what about 6 months ago when everyone was complaining that CD's were $18.99 and that's why we downloaded music off kazaa? Did music suddenly become cheaper, or is it that once downloadable albums appeared for $10 bucks, now we're complaining because they're all only $9.99 at best buy?
I think it's more likely that this guy's kids did it, or that someone stole his mail (or his garbage...well, did you see the film in question?). I can't imagine some b-actor in his sixties having the ability or desire to leak a DIVX on Kazaa.
I was gonna moderate this article but it's just too juicy!
You'll still need a VST aware application, and I don't think Audacity will launch the GUIs. But these will get you a step in the right direction for free.
Very true. According to Line 6, there will be a Mac build, but because of the changes between Jaguar and Panther in OS X audio, they decided to wait. It's in the works, but by then it might be too late. Anyways, you can still plug a PodXT to your mac and not use their simulations. In fact, thats a great direct box (or the V-Amp 2) as an in-between.
I would have never imagined that they would include an application as great as GarageBand and kept the price of iLife at $50. GarageBand is gonna compete with products like Guitar Port, so you get amplifier simulations for a tiny price. They sounded great too. I just can't believe this, it's gotta be a strategy to sell more Macs because the technology behind GarageBand (and its $99 add-on) is NOT cheap. If it were a demo for a high-end application I would have been just as floored. How much is a G5 again?
Perfect opportunity for Apple to do what they did with Safari and Darwin. Extend it, make it better, include it as an Apple branded product, and give the changes back to the community.
I wonder how long it will be before Appleworks is nixed in favor of a kOffice - based product. Microsoft Office for the Mac is actually a really good product, and Appleworks doesn't touch it. Get to work Apple!
I have a Pioneer 105 (dvd-r/-rw only) on an external FW box. I use it with Windows and my tiBook. Whenever I burn any movies at higher than 1x speed, only my Apex DVD player shows it. My Sony ejects it.
Burning media at ever-faster rates is pretty pointless if you can't read it on your DVD player. Unless 8x DVD+r is readable on your DVD player, you have no reason to use anything other than an older and cheaper Pioneer drive like mine.
It's not too awful to wait an hour for your disc to be burnt.
I wonder if this new iPod will continue acting as a firewire HD. Or if it will work with the iPod accessories. So many questions. As others have posted, this gadget would essentially drive others out of business. I would have never guessed an iPod could be delivered at such a low price. Wouldn't the HD on the unit alone make up for 90% of the price?
Apple has not been completely succesful this year, but who can deny that it is the most ambitious computer maker? Apple constantly pushes the envelope forward with newer features (FW 800, bluetooth, 17 inch laptop), and the rest of the pack try to clone their offerings in a Windows world. When's the last time Apple had to copy a Dell or Gateway design to stay current?
I actually think next year will be even more interesting, as Apple pursues their music / video strategy. There's rumors of a Pro Tools killer on the way. Go Apple!
I talked to the guys from Ogg not long ago at the SoCal Linux Expo. I asked them about Apple. They told me that Apple Engineers like and use Vorbis all the time (you can get a plugin for iTunes). But as much as the engineering team may like it, it doesn't make much business sense for Apple since they're trying to push AAC. They had to support MP3, since it's the most common file format. Vorbis doesn't have enough people clamoring for it, or using it. Remember, Slashdot is not the real world.
You could tell who the real nerds were in the theater (yes I was one of them) - because we chuckled out loud to the claim that the robots are "3 law safe". Pretty ballsy to put something that obscure into a movie trailer. I think this movie might actually be good. Will Smith was pretty good in ID4.
I highly recommend 2 books: Fast Food Nation and The Best Democracy Money Can Buy. As Greg Palast of the former book says, buy it from Amazon.com, a non-profit company (unintentionally).
Fast Food Nation might make you think twice about that Big Mac, and Best Democracy shows you the access and power of campaign donations.
The Discovery channel lost me when it became a showcase for the chopper-bike industry. I want science, not some sticker-designing west coast chopper guy ordering some poor haps around. What would you rather watch, a tour of the Google company, or "jesse james" designing the dump-truck-limo-helicopter?
I like Bikes as much as the next guy, and that chopper reality show is pretty funny, but move those shows over to Spike TV and give me some science! Whoever was joking about Mr Wizard was more right than they thought.
Anyone read Fast Food Nation? There's a fascinating article on the chemicals the "flavor industry" uses. There's a chemical compound that smells just like a grilled burger, fresh cherries, etc. Making cereal taste like coffee is probably easy, but it probably doesn't actually contain any coffee. You didn't think that strawberry shake from McD's containes strawberries, did you?
Every American should read that book. It's incredible.
You can limit how many free pages a day you want, and what type of pages you don't want ads in. For example, I get 20 ad free pages a day on the main page, and I leave the ads inside the articles. This gives me a few months for 10 bucks.
Karma Whoring, but getting a preview of the next storymakes it worthwhile for me. No Slashdot effect (99% of the time). No Ads on main page is also nice. I also like this site so much that 10 bucks for 1000 ad-free pages is a bargain.
...Match this with the heads up display from the earlier article and the possibilities are endless. Imagine checking your email using nothing more than your glasses and your brain wave mouse! Where do I invest my pennies?

I propose that instead of mice, we put rats in space, and launch Darl McBride to Mars!

My band was at one time an MP3.com artist, and let me tell you, if they want to pipe Wrapped In Red into an elevator, they couldn't make me happier!

Check out these for starters, they are all free:
The Green Machine
SimulAnalog Guitar Suite

Hey, for mere $3 a GB you can just cart around an Xserve RAID. You think i's got a headphone out and battery back yet?

I don't know about buying one of those, I heard the clock batteries go bad after a while.

Excuse me, sir, but a lot of us on Slashdot not only don't hate Steve Jobs, we would pay good money to roll around in the leader's dirty underwear!
