Apple sells refurbs on their "special deals" section of the store.apple.com site. They are discounted, but come in plain packaging, not the cool box you get on a new one. Didn't matter to me.

I bought a 10gb iPod refurbed for 249 a while ago. The unit was not cosmetically refurbished. There were scratches and dings on it. I had to return it once for further repair. Still, I saved a few bucks and now the unit is OK.

Just know that a refurb may not be a walk in the park, and if it's a gift for someone else, they may get a very used-looking one.

My last comment was marked -1 Troll, so here's my second take on this:
I don't think this distro offers anything special over a downloadable one. OK, Java is obviously going to work easier. StarOffice? It's basically Open Office with a DB app.

Ok it's for the support. When's the last time your sysadmin called Microsoft with a question about XP or Office?

Sun is known for high powered Solaris servers. They're diluting their brand by putting out a rebranded distro you can roll yourself.

An IBM distro would make more sense. We already buy IBM servers and workstations. Sun's servers won't be running the "Java Desktop System".

  12. Sucks on Java Desktop System Review · · Score: 1, Troll

Pardon my French, here's a reason Linux fucking sucks. I should know, I work with it all the time. From the article:

I installed it on /dev/hdd3 as / (a single partition for / and /boot) and used a 512 MB /swap on /dev/hdd2. I told the boot manager to get installed on /dev/hdd3 as I don't want my existing bootmanager to get nuked. Upon rebooting to go to the second part of the JDS installation, Grub will load itself and then it will give me the grub command line and it would NOT load JDS to continue with the second part of the installation. I had to reboot, go to my Mandrake 9.1 installation, mount the ReiserFS JDS hdd3 partition, create a custom LILO file and then chroot to hdd3 and use LILO as my boot manager instead of grub. I did check the /boot/grub files on JDS, everything was in order, it's just that Grub can't read that menu.lst file when it is not installed on MBR. Sun told me that this seemed like a very specific case, and it seems that it was, as I later installed JDS on my AthlonXP PC and chose the same boot manager and partition setup and indeed worked flawlessly this time.

Just give me OS X any day instead.

What's your point? The TV Wonder VE is not an obsolete product, its in their active supported (and sold) lineup. There might very well be a great reason why the latest software doesn't work with my card, but I don't care.

The software is crappy, even if they fix the bugs. The interface sucks, the TV Tuner info overlay sucks. I told it to record a show for me, it put the show on my desktop. I try to open it with their player, it crashes. I try to play it in Quicktime (its a MOV file), Quicktime doesn't know what the hell it is.

The program grid is horrible. although they did get one part right - the TV is visible in the upper LHC of the screen while you browse listings. Other than that Snapstream is on a whole other level of greatness.

I had high expectations for ATI's software and for Snapstream. Both let me down. I hope MythTV changes my mind about PC Tuner software. That would be a hoot, since its free and open source.

The applications for watching and recording TV shows suck. Real bad. I have the latest version from their website too.

The best program I encountered was Snapstream, and it works with the card reviewed in this article. But it uses ACCESS and Jet to store tv shows, and can you guess what happened 3x before my trial period was over? That's right, corrupt database.

One further note, these cards will NOT work with Myth TV, the linux option. The TV Wonder series does work with Myth, though.

If you think it's just a box that plays music, its much more: It's a firewire hard drive, it's a calendar, it's a contact viewer, it's even got games. On top of that its the best walkman ever.
