PDF's can be created and read without any Adobe software. Adobe owns the specification. They created it, so that's just fine with me. Let us know when *you* create a cross-platform, business standard, open source web and printer friendly format, and I'll subscribe to your newsletter.
Microsoft Word is as proprietary as it gets. Frankly if I was Adobe I wouldn't have even opened the standard. They're giving money away. I create business reports all the time in PDF that are easily shared with clients/whatever, and I don't have Adobe software on my computer, other than the basic reader.
How about a program that not only places the votes in a secure database, but also creates a PDF (an open format) and stores it on the local disks (RAID). Include all details of the vote, such as voter ID, etc. All the same stuff we keep on paper today.
After voting is complete, another program could open the PDFs and parse them out (is this possible?) and compare the results with the database. I don't know what to do in case of a discrepancy, haven't thought that through.
I wouldn't worry too much. I work for a Fortune 500 company and we still use Office 97. We are not alone. By the time we upgrade i think there will be conclusion on these issues.
He barely mentions music and movies, but Hollywood is eager to charge us per vieweing, rather than a pay-once watch/listen forever deal. Pay-per view and Video on demand are a current example. Of course, as long as DVDs and CDs remain mainstream, we won't have to worry about paying 10 cents every time we listen to the "Macarena".
Perhaps you need to get real. What a shame, only 99% of computer users will be able to view the film. Mac users click here. As an avid OS X-er and wannabe film maker, this is probably the easiest way to distribute an indie movie. The encoder is free, and you have a massive audience. Politically correct around here? No. An intelligent choice for a broke movie director? Fuck yeah.
The iPod can be bought for 200 bucks refurbed (10 gig previous generation...10 GIG!) Why would I get this for 40 bucks less? Radio and Voice recording would be a welcome addition to future iPods though.
I'm in the market right now, and the Rio SP250 wins over this one too. CD Based, larger, but with integrated FM and 700 megabyte CDR capacity.
Bookpool should always be your first search for prices on tech books. Serously. It's 15.95 over there. Don't work there, but I buy all my tech books from them.
The article basically argues that communication channels are now so fast that bad word of mouth spreads much quicker than ever before. But this is the "half empty" scenario. What these pricks don't understand is that the reverse logic applies too. Good movies, even small independent movies get a nice shot in the arm as people recommend them. Remember the Blair Witch project? Bowling for Columbine? These were movies that got big through the Internet, or based off of Internet hype, not massive advertising budgets. All Miramax, hmm...
I don't know how accurate these pictures are, but they only show identical comments (except for 1 line), not actual code. They're going to have to do better than that. And yes, they converted the text to the symbol font. These guys astound me with their stupidity.
Obviously no one shares this vision in their printer-sales department. Dell's printers use propietary ink cartridges full of proprietary nonsense.
ring ring ring who's there?
opted out, why a call this evening?
Mexico, you have phone too
Ok so its a joke. Next how about a funny joke?
I read the article, there's no mention of this birthday party thing. Do either the submitters or the editors read the story?

Oh, and whatever happens, no Windows allowed.

I, for one, welcome our new satellite-guided human killing robot overlords.
"Dear Slashdot - I have devised a way for all of you to pound my web server in the ass".
I'm a subscriber (are you?) and I could barely get to it within the sub period.
go to "jshkflfhe.com" or whatever. At the Verisign page, enter "verisign licks ass". 2 of the 10 search results are from slashdot. Oh, the irony...
Fucked Over Rebuilt Dodge doesn't make as much sense. How sad. That's my favorite one.
Makes sense, if you want to run the IDE on different Operating Systems.

Even Darl McBride knows this lawsuit sucks. He owns the Unix code in the IPod, after all.
I hope the judge is a Mac user who hates the Beatles.
Dear sir, you win. After years of reading Slashdot, that was the shit-pants funniest thing I ever read.
My sincerest thanks, Barnes and Noble, for saving our E-Trees.
Well, obviously .NET is better, since IT'S WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS.

Any key?
The worst part is that they wanted him to press a key that doesn't even exist on his keyboard!
I, for one, welcome our new Disney Walking-Talking Animatronic Overlords.
