It strikes me as very funny to ask this question to a bunch of people at work who do nothing but read Slashdot all day (me included!).
I see a definite trend towards moving internal applications away from DOS terminals and towards web-based applications. To that effect, Macs are a great choice because they *do* require less maintenance than Windows, and you don't have to be afraid of viruses. Where I work the hardware guys are either crying from over-work, or they sit there and browse the web all day. It's very random. I'm not sure how a Mac fits into this equation.
Oh and show me Websphere running on an Xserve and we'll seriously consider one. Its half the price of our IBM servers that are slow as shit.
"There are no power outages, you are being subjected to the lies of the infidels. As I speak, my wife is in the tanning salon and my aquarium fish are doing just fine".
Since Jboss is not J2EE Certified by Sun (that's a long-winded upsetting story), Apple can say you can run J2EE apps, but can't claim panther to contain a J2EE application server. Hopefully Stebe will pony up some cash to help the group get certified, since now it's in Apple's best interest.
I develop for Websphere now, would love to try my EJB's on Panther, and get an excuse for my boss to buy me a G5!
I think there's a great opportunity to make some easy cash by sh0rting this stock, don't you think? I think a dive to sub 1 dollar in the next few months is not of out of the question once IBM starts firing the cannons.
This is an attempt to force parents to get a clue and uninstall Kazaa from their home computers.
I'm not against file sharing, my band has benefitted from it, but would I want a little kid on Kazaa anyway? Here's a clue - do a global search for Britney Spears and figure out how many of those results will be: A)Music Files and B)Legit Music Files. It's all porn. Good for me (!), not for little kids.
Borland should be afraid. I develop java with Eclipse pretty much exclusively now, and if you're doing server-side java you don't really need anything else. Only thing I haven't figured out how to do is deploy EJB's like Jetace (I use Websphere). Anyone know? Can I export the EJB completely from within Eclipse?
Back on track, check out this plugin: PMD. It scans your classes for unused variables and a few other things. Some code our company paid for had literally hundred of unused strings in a class!
They hid this one until they patched it, but in light of the previous post about the US government relying so much on MS software, it makes me uneasy. This exploit let the attacker take control of the PC. Not good if you're running the bad guy database.
Check out Got Apex. You can get a full featured 14 or 15 inch-screen Dell for less than 800 bucks when you use the numerous discounts and rebates available. Or even better get a refurbed iBook for a little more.
I use Web Mail Clients exclusively, and only with Mozilla as the browser. So count me in. No problems with h*tmail or y*hoo. Consider deploying a web based email solution. I'm sure someone can suggest an open source solution.

Now its gonna be a real pain in the ass to configure video drivers once I put Linux on my Xbox2.

I'm sorry but all I can imagine after reading this is Vincent and Julius in the apartment.
Julius: Please allow me to retort...
insert machine gun fire.
I liked the round-up but what matters to me most is price, and I could not find price info anywhere. How much do these things cost?
Hmmm...Hence the name The Missing Manual?
Whos down with OPIP?
Yeah you know me
Whos down with OPIP?
All the ladies!
Other dummies books to look at:
Performing Brain Surgery for Dummies
Global Thermonuclear Warfare for Dummies
Flying the Boeing 747 for Dummies
Climbing Everest for Dummies
I'll shit my pants if this thing costs less than 300 bucks.
I don't watch movies on my computer screen. I watch them on my TV.

I hereby give my blessing to anyone who wants to sue a guy with the balls to be known as: hottdude0587@Kazaa.
Imagine the turmoil to a school administrator, knowing their students' life savings are about to get sucked up by the RIAA for sharing a few songs.
I hope more colleges follow their lead.

I would love this so much more, and find it much more useful, if Steve Jobs had thought of this.

Well, they actually considered buying from Microsoft until Ballmer showed up doing the monkey dance.

..known from several security tools such as Satan ..."I'll be working from the West coast".
Please, stay where you are, sir. We have enough problems out here already.
In other news, Mr Gates declared all Microsoft Software is now "Donationware" and has set up a PayPal account for Microsoft.
