The guy's been right an awful lot on predictions. Go ahead and call him a nut, but anytime I read something he says, I put a 'could happen' note next to it. Unlike quite a few other folks like Smalley (bloviating pinhead IMHO) who get a quick crossing-out.
I think he challenges conventional ideas, which will always get you slammed.
Everyone (of 'consequence')(ha!) thought Tesla was nuts too.
Ah... that's right. (now I remember). Sad that he died. He was a wonderful writer. 'The Gentle Giants of Ganymede' was also superb. I met Robert Forward once and when I commented on how the Cheela reminded me of the Mesklinites, he smiled broadly and said 'Harry taught me to think like and alien'. Forward's books aren't too bad, IMHO.
Yes indeed!! Fantastic novel! I've met Hal Clement (forget his real name) and he was a wonderful, funny man. Very humble and honest - which is reflected in his characters.
I've been working as a web developer at a company completely dominated by Wintel-me-it-aint-so boxes and have been lucky enough to have a Mac G3.
I too found it amusing to watch the PC-zealots grinding themselves into dust again and again and again. Hell, I even got recruited to help out at the help desk during the recent virus hoo-haw. LOL!!!!
I'd like to emphasize though, 'hard' science fiction (focussing on real science and definitely possible outcomes) requires a certain amount of education to read. Children of the last decade are being educated poorly - and their imaginations suffer for it. Literate people dream BIG. Illiterate people dream cartoons.
So... what you're saying is... in a year or so we'll see a bunch of used XServes available as military surplus? YEAAAH BABY! Daddy's gettin an XServe! WHOO HOO!
I'm SO glad you brought that up. If you have an answering machine, just get a recording of the three information tones that are played when you dial a wrong number and record them onto the beginning of your answering machine message. That's essentially what the TeleZapper does - and you can do it FREE. We get a LOT fewer (virtually none) telemarketing calls since we did this.
We just bought a piece of remote mountain property and the USGS and satellite shots of the area are over 10 years old - frankly useless for showing the access roads created in the last two years. A quick aerial shot with this rig might be just what we need. I've easily spent >$50 in time trying to find what I want from satellite companies. To get anything current (5 years) it seems to be rather pricey. Anyone with better info? I'm open to it.
Designing With Web Standards is a superb book that explains the WHY, then the HOW quite clearly. I strongly recommend it.
What a laugh! Someone complaining that the MAC held the PC back?? Pardon me whilst I get a more-absorbent chair.
Ah. But what devine madness tis. Onward lads! Into the dark! (smiles and imagines that bouncy young woman from 1984)

Thanks for pointing that out!
LOL! Now I >know you're kidding. You don't have to be clever to use OS X, just tired of getting yanked around by unrepentant crimminals.
Hitchcock.
Just finished watching the whole set. Loved every second of it. I strongly recommend it.
...welcome our new cheese-grater overlords!!! Slice me! Dice me! Yeeeeaaaaahhhhh
...people that speak out against 'established authority' sometimes get [NO CARRIER]
Now >>THAT'S "News for Nerds. Stuff that MATTERS!" Made me bloomin Froyday ye did!
...someone with a brain to question his god-like inspirations. Nope. Ain't gonna happen.
I stand (repeatedly) corrected!
Trust the Trekkies (Trekkers)(Tribbles?) to come through with not just chapter, but verse!
That's a RIOT!
Always liked those displays - Okuda did some truly outstanding work for that show.
There are NO Macs on NCC 1701(any letter).
AtomBombXP - guaranteed to explode.
