    2) Hire kids that are just slightly older than your target demographic, and that the target group like, to work the shop.

    Don't forget, large breasts and tight t-shirts on your waitresses will appeal to most of your target demographic (11-85 year old males). Whatever you do, do NOT hire geeky teenager boys to work at your cybercafe. You'll just drive business away elsewhere. Look into providing topless wait service for the over-18 Counter-Strike playing crowd. Depending on your community though they may be prudes about this.

    P.S.: Yes, I'm entirely serious. Big breasted women bringing me Pepsi would be the only thing that would make me come into your cyber cafe. I'll check my mail on my 3G cell phone or wait until I get home to browse the net.

    Even assuming the numbers claimed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics' talking head are true, what good does it do to replace one lost 6-figure engineering position with eleven minimum-wage, no health plan, burger-flipper slots?

    I think Slashdot is blowing the whole economy thing out of proportion because it has adversely affected the tech sector. If you'll all remember, we were riding high for 4 or 5 years on completely inflated stock prices, endless supplies of venture capital, and completely crazy business plans with no hope of producing profit. The market corrected for these problems and we're back where we should have been today if we continued the same level of growth as we had 5 years ago. The only reason it seems horrible is because 25 year olds fresh out of college can no longer expect to make $75k/year making web sites. Boo friggin hoo. Many people work their entire lives in their profession and never earn more than $45k/year. Quit crying about it and acting like it's some personal tragedy that your 4 year degree doesn't automatically entitle you to a 6 figure salary anymore.

    Pretty sure that VeriSign no longer uses BIND.

    It doesn't matter what Verisign uses, your ISP (or you if you're running your DNS) configures your local DNS server with the option which prohibits types other than delegation records in the .com and .net zones. Verisign could be running Microsoft's DNS server for all we care as long as it talks the standard DNS protocols.

    Transmeta had a chance to do something interesting and amazing but it really has turned out to be a huge disappointment. They can't even get their processors into mainstream laptops and the power savings these days is negligible compared to modern day Intel stuff like the Centrino or P4-M. They should've went the route Via is taking and produce low-power, cool running processors in the mini-ITX form factor motherboards. Via's EPIA line is very nice, but they're starting to slip with some of the modern faster versions that have added fans onto the heatsink. Where are the modern fanless low power fast processors?

    Wow, and I was just starting to forget about how much I vehemently hated Verisign. It's always good when a company reminds you every once in awhile why you believe they're completely evil.

    Probably the Serial ATA isn't supported. You'll need to downgrade to MFM drives for 100% Linux compatibility.

    so when are we going to see some consoles with 1MB level1 cache? that would totally improve performance, more than upping processor speeds

    And put in a better processor! How about an AMD Athlon 64 FX-51? Up the paltry 10 gig drive to a 72GB WD SATA Raptor... granted all this is gonna get pretty hot so it'd need a bigger case and some more fans. Oh, let's not forget a good modern video card.. maybe an NVidia GeForce FX 5900. Get rid of the goofy controller though while we're at it and repace it with a nice keyboard and trackball. Also, it should run the full version of Windows XP Pro. I wish someone would make a version of the X-Box with those specs. I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

    I don't know. I'm using Windows XP Professional and there's honestly nothing in it I would've paid over $50 for to upgrade from Windows 2000 Professional. I got it for $20 through a campus licensing program, but if I had to buy it on my own at full price I would've just stuck with Windows 2000. I can't imagine how crippled the XP Home version is if XP Pro is this bland. I would've expected developer tools like Visual Studio and Office 2003 Professional to be bundled in with XP Professional for the outrageous price they charge for it normally (over $200!!!). I can get basically the same thing, sans the support for Windows games, by installing Debian GNU/Linux w/OpenOffice.

    Try reading the article. Windows XP Home was still too expensive for these users in Thailand. I seriously doubt you'll be able to get it outside of some OEM deals on computers sold in Thailand so I wouldn't get so enthused over this.

    You simply burn it to CD (which it will do) then its a WAV and its like anyother ripped music. So its not a problem.

    Except you lost all the highs and lows of the original track during the lossy compression to WMA format. Better to just go buy the CD at a used CD store, rip it, and then sell it back.

    Is that permanent for you, or permanent for your computer? (I'm hoping to last longer than my current computer). I've never used any DRM, i'm wondering how this stuff works.

    Oh come on, haven't you learned how the system works yet? People who had albums had to rebuy them as cassettes to be legitimate. People who had cassettes had to rebuy the songs as CDs. People who have them as CDs have to rebuy them in lossy compressed DRM protected formats. When the next thing comes along, the RIAA will expect you to repurchase your entire collection in whatever format that will be.

    Which lists hardly any phones really. They only support a handful of phones from a handful of companies like Nokia, Ericsson, and Motorola. What about Samsung, Sanyo, etc.? My Sanyo 4900 SprintPCS phone can connect just fine via USB and I can use it to connect to the Internet, but I can't sink my stupid address book via iSync?? Sanyos are probably the most popular Sprint phones for good reception and yet Apple ignores them. Weird. Granted, Sprint doesn't have any bluetooth phones, but I don't mind plugging in a usb cable to sync my phone.

    Why should I care who's watching me if I have nothing to hide? And aren't cameras just an extension of any authority watching me? What's next? Policeman on the streets shouldn't look at the public as it is an infringement of civil liberties?

    No, what's next is mandatory DNA sampling and fingerprinting upon demand of law enforcement for whatever reason (whether you're under arrest or not). Actually hell, the U.K. may already have that. I forgot you don't have a written Constitution that prevents such invasions of privacy and self-incrimination. I guess you don't mind if the police just casually look around your flat everytime they're in the neighborhood just to make sure you're not doing anything wrong. Afterall, you have nothing to hide. Where does it stop? Before you say America is turning into the same thing, yes, and we're bitching about it here just as much. The AmeriNazi government under Shrub is destroying our rights without constitutional authority.

    This is a lot of work man. The requirement of graphical interface in there makes it all the more complicated. And not too many people on the planet will realize how unbelievably cool you really are when and if you get it working.

    I don't really understand what the purpose of this is. If he's already got this all setup with CDs, why bother with much more expensive USB key disks that hold less stuff? The closest key drive to a CD would be a 512MB one and last time I checked they were over $100. Just burn a ten cent CD-RW image and be done with it.

    I haven't sold a laptop with a floppy drive in months, and when I ask cusomers whether they want a floppy drive installed in the new computer we are assembling, most say: "Whatever for?"

    Upgrading your BIOS? I know that's even becoming an obsolete reason with online updates to the flash bios from motherboard makers like MSI. Run a Windows app, flash the bios, reboot and voila. I suppose you could also create a bootable CD with the image on it. Programming classes at schools also like getting floppy disks. All my professors insisted on floppy disks even when I suggested a CD would be cheaper for me since I'd probably never see it again. Nope, they want a floppy disk.

    Oh quit whining. Go to Monster.com and type in network engineer and it returns at least 5000 jobs. There are tons of opportunities.

    I understand raiding the offices but the homes to? This smells a lot like the US patriot act

    In addition, hundreds of thousands of music files and terabytes worth of pirated DivX movies were confiscated on the RAID at the Sharman office. Kazaa is essentially shut down as there are no files available to be shared now that they're all in police custody. *rolls eyes*.

    What's the point of raiding the offices of a software company who just makes the P2P client? They're not committing the crime!

    This is a bit of a religious war, but I'll bite at the flamebait. I cannot abide Sys-V mess'o'symlinks, one reason I stay with Slackware, one of the only BSD-style distros.

    Well, considering I work daily on Solaris and Linux, it's really never been a question. Obviously Sys V init scripts are much easier to work with since Solaris uses them (and 90% of my admin work is Solaris).

    On the handful of machines that I work with that are BSD based, I've always found it VERY awkward to restart services. With sysv, it's just natural to type /etc/init.d/whatever restart or /etc/init.d/whatever stop && /etc/init.d/whatever start. I suppose BSD has ways to do this, but sysv's way is more elegant IMHO.

    Geez, I'm having flashbacks to the warez days and having those awesome tiny little demos for the groups included with the games and such. It's amazing what they could do with a 386 and a standard VGA card. The demo guys could've taught the game programmers a thing or two about efficient use of the graphics card I guess.

    Me, I'll be attending the the Inferno festival which takes place just a few miles south. Easter is traditionally a time when there are lots of things happening in Norway, and a lot of people will be travelling up in the mountains to ski, snowboard etc.

    Doesn't anyone in Norway.. well.. I dunno how to say this... "worship" Jesus? Shouldn't you be spending Easter in a church and then go out to brunch with your family? Is that just a weird American thing I get roped into doing every year? Going skiing sounds more fun than putting on a suit and going to church.

    That newfangled 2.0 kernel? Maybe for those bleeding-edge folks using unstable, but I think Woody still uses a hamster wheel attached to an abacus.

    I think the official woody kernel is still 2.2.x. If you want to get bleeding edge then they do have 2.4 kernels available. They even have a 2.4 boot floppies for those of us with hardware too new to be supported by 2.2. I guess I'm not complaining. I helped someone setup Debian and I made sure he stuck with stable because he was always bitching about Mandrake breaking something during updates. He didn't really care about having the newest and greatest stuff, just a stable workstation for web browsing and terminal access.

    The awesome backward compatibility of the PC architecture is one of the main reasons it's the most popular personal computer platform. Besides, there have been tons of advances in BIOS technology over the past 20 years. Sure, the basics are still in there, but even 5 years ago you couldn't boot off a USB key fob or even over the network (PXE) on most motherboards. 10 years ago power management was basically non-existent and things like ACPI and APIC were years away. Extend, don't just throw it away. If you're going to get rid of it then at least adopt Openboot firmware like Macs and Suns have.

    Well, personally I never cared for Half-Life so I'm not looking forward to Half-Life 2. My poison was Counter-strike. I wish they'd port that to something a little more open than Valve's crappy platform. How about make Counter-strike a Quake 3 mod so the rest of us can play it?
