Half-Life 2 Targeted for Summer Release
Gudlyf writes "According to CNN Money, Valve's director of marketing Doug Lombardi announced that the company is 'currently targeting this summer for the completion of Half-Life 2'. From the article: 'Valve does not plan to reveal any additional information until the time surrounding the E3 trade show, where the game will once again be shown this year. E3 will be held in Los Angeles May 12-14.'" The game was delayed following a previously covered code leak, and the article also notes: "Arkane Studios, an independent French developer that created the critically-acclaimed role-playing game 'Arx Fatalis,' has licensed [Half-Life 2's Source engine] for a forthcoming title [as has Troika's Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines]."
So, does this mean that halfway to summer, it will get delayed again? And then half way to the new date, a new delay? And half way to that date....
Who knew Half-Life was the estimated time to release?
I wonder how good it'll be at 64 bit support?

With updated source code available, plenty of improvements, and lots of ways to create your own maps, there's plenty to do before HL2 comes out!

Critically aclaimed or not, that game sucked.
But wasn't it released already?

Didnt Valve announce that they were going to release HL2 in february instead of december because of the source code leak? So what happened to change the release date to 'somewhere in the summer'?
Or was the leak just a nice excuse for the clueless managers who wanted
game shipped around the Christmas shopping spree?
I wonder which year?

Remember how many cheats were written and used for Half Life, Counter-Strike, etc -- and that source was closed?
:(
Just imagine how much more the Half Life 2 and the Counter-Strike port of it will suck *this time* now that the source code had been leaked. This thing is going to be miserable to play online.
I agree with you.

Did they fix anything beyond the DRM pieces that leaked with the game? The game was seriously incomplete, so have they taken advantage of their time to do things right this time, or have they just fscked with DRM?
... what, two more GPU revisions? This wont tax anything by the time it comes out!
Half-Life has had one of the longest lives (in terms of popularity) of any video game. I have gone back and played it (the single play) many times, and still do, and the game is from 1998. It is a timeless classic, and its modability has kept its multiplayer alive with CS and Firearms. Most people who actually know something about gaming would say this is the best game ever made.

I of course can't wait for our new Half-Life 2 overlords, but in my mind I won't believe it untill i see it on a brick and morter shelf or available to buy in my steam gui --- yeah right, selling half life 2 over steam "content delivery system" will make the myDoom SCO DOS attack look like a tea party.
I've been dissaponted too many times to believe any date they put out...

If E3 this year is anything like last year's, remember the fact that Vampire uses the same engine.
The queue for Halflife was crazy, stretching around the booth and back again. Vampire on the other hand had hardly anyone interested in it. Knowing it was the same engine, I got about an hour with the guys, going wherever I wanted in the game, getting every last question I could think of answered - while the people who queued for twice as long for the H2 demo got a fraction of that.
Thank god this was pushed back from it's previous release dates... now I might actually pass this semester.

I heard that it was the DOOM3 engine... what the heck is a source eninge anyway?

I built a new machine this summer in Anticipation of the Fall release of HL2 that was being touted everywhere. I bought a $500 video card and put together a $2,500 gaming rig JUST FOR HL2.
Then they delayed it until xmas. Then they delayed it until the first quarter/April-ish of 2004. Now they're delaying it until Summer. My machine will barely be able to play the final product at this rate, I'm sure. And even if it can play it, I won't be able to get the full high-end enjoyment out of it that I had planned by building what was (at the time I thought HL2 was actually on the way) a top-notch kick ass machine.
But will they now release a Linux version for the original Half-Life when they have a new cash cow???
I would have more respect for Valve if they just came right out and said "listen, we are running behind. The game won't be out for a few more months." Instead they try to blame it on the source code leak. Sorry, I don't buy it.
I always save my last mod point to mod up a good troll. You people are too serious.

It is the Half Life Two engine. It was made to run Half Life Two. It was devloped by Valve, the people makeing Half Life Two.

Don't they realize how difficult it is to get two weeks off from work starting on an unspecified date sometime in the "summer"?
Who acclaimed Arx Fatalis? I never even heard of the game, it came free with my video card, I played it for 10 minutes and it was total crap. Half-Life 2 will probably be some game we play through one time and never pick up again.
The real deal is Team Fortress 2 the multiplayer half-life 2 mod. That's going to be the game of the year, except for Natural Selection of course.

I pity the ATI owners who expected to get a copy of it when they purchased their graphics cards. No doubt HL2 will be released with the next ATI card too.
Vapourware ? or are they just waiting for the release of Unreal Tournament 2004 to go away ? (the UT2004 demo is due within 2 weeks)
After seeing how they handle Steam*, I can see one of two conclusions:
1. They're so busy on HL2 that they can't invest the manpower and energy into keeping existing stuff running well and smoothly. Hence, the Steam problems.
2. They are soaking up the publicity, continual cash-flow and living too easy. They will delay HL2 until it's no longer worth putting out in its current form. See TFC2.
* Steam is their content-distribution system that forces updates to those who wish to use multiplayer functionality (unless you use the older versions).

Clearly you need to use their last release date estimate ("April 2004") to arrive at Summer 2004.
Ironically, the word ironically is often used incorrectly.
This is unfortunate news. How many times has it been delayed now? Seems it was originally going to be released in September 2003, then sometime in Spring 2004, and now Summer 2004. At this rate Duke Nukem: Forever will be out before Half-Life 2. Oh, well...

Well sure... but they didn't "plan" to reveal the beta source code either. But I wish them luck! (seriously)
Yeah, I was really impressed with the videos from the previous e3, and even though its been more than a long time they really don't need to rush it. Especially since the single player story mode will be the meat of it. If it was another deathmatch fps I'd expect them to push it out and patch it and such, but when it gets released, I want to play it straight through, completed. So, I think it's unfair to expect them to be expected to get it done ahead of when they think it should be done. I also have to tell myself it will be worth it, theyre doing some really impressive work, or so it would seem.

The "simple" theft of the source code is not the reason to the extended delay, its simply that they where just not finished and have required this much more time to get it to a release state. Securing the network code or even outright changing it would only require a couple months at most to fix to prevent cheaters; so that option is not valid either. I think they screwed up on stating the release date and this was an excuse that would satisfy reporters.

If you can read this sig - the bitch fell off.
A friend of mine sent me this snippet today:
CGN: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has been getting a lot of buzz due to its excellent graphics. What should users with lower-end computers expect from the play of this game? What are the system requirements?
Oleg: Here are the specs for comfortable gaming: P IV-1.4 Ghz / Athlon, 256 Mb RAM, GeForce 4 (or any other card of the same level). The PC hardware market dictates its rules and sets new limits for the games - the slower your computer and the older you video card is, the less details and effects you get. The better processor and video card, the better graphics you experience.. GeForce 2, GeForce 3, GeForce 4, GeForce FX cards and their counterparts have differences both in architecture and abilities so if your video card is more up-to-date you get more effects. For example, pixel and vertex shader effects (nice water surface, etc.) can be seen on GeForce 3 and higher cards. On the other hand, GeForce 2 will show an animated texture. GeForce FX will provide dynamic light sources and soft dynamic shadows cast from anything onto anything and bump-mapping on all surfaces which at least exceeds the Doom 3 technology.
That sounds scarier than Doom 3 itself.
VALVe calls it the 'Source engine' though.
The original HL is incredible work--nobody will deny that. The net play was nothing short of impressive across the board and it only got more enjoyable as follow-on additions came out.
So, like any sequel, it's to be determined if they're riding on the value earned by the original half-life name. This, to me, raises the repeated issue of the nature of first-person gaming improvements. For me (and prolly for most ppl here), the fun of HL1 was in plot solo-play elements, well-done net play, and a decent 3D experience Note I said "decent", not outstanding--we enjoy games ultimately because of non-graphical related quality. We've all played Zelda in the original Nintendo--it was incredibly done. How much "better" would HL1 or Zelda be with twice the graphical quality? I'd argue not much. The real innovations are in anything but graphics. How about Starcraft? Anyone here thing WC3 is a major leap over Starcraft (other than basic visual/GUI/resolution improvements)?
I guess I'm just saying that in the realm of professional games, non-graphical innovations are what make the game. These modern game companies have a real challenge ahead of them.

No chance of a Linux or Mac OS X version because Valve, the developper of HL 1&2 was founded (ex: Gabe Newell) by people with strong ties to Microsoft. Here is the proof: Counter Strike (based on HL1) is the most played game on the internet bar none and runs on modest hardware. So if porting a game for Mac/Linux was ever viable, this would be the game, and would surley have a good return on investment. Yet this never happened, and never will. Well... we still have Doom III to look forward to.
That's what I get for trying to crack a funny. There are too many over-zealous, angry people with mod points, today. ;-)

I believe it was around Sept. 20th when Valve and Vivendi admitted that the release was going to be delayed. A few days after that the source was leaked and everyone jumped on that bandwagon. It's know come to light in several HL2 forums that the AI was incomplete and several levels weren't right.
HL2 is an ambitious game and a lot of work goes into creating a AAA title. To have it delayed doesn't surprise me in the least. To blame it all on the source leak is unfair. Valve just didn't make their milestone dates, plain and simple.
I'm actually more excited to hear that the Arx Fatalis guys are using the source engine than Troika or even Valve.
I'm not a big fan of fps games, and Troika have really failed to deliver with their other games in my opinion. They can only trade under the grace of having worked on Fallout for so long.
Arx Fatalis was a diamond in the rough though. A trip into a atmospheric gameworld with some oldskool crpg details that developers seem to forget about these days. I'd like to see what they could do with more experience and a great engine.
Or was the leak just a nice excuse for the clueless managers who wanted game shipped around the Christmas shopping spree?
Actually, it's a poor attempt to cover up the fact that they're massively behind schedule.
Remember the E3 demo that stunned us all with the dynamic environments and phenomenal AI? Remember how they claimed it was all normal gameplay footage? It was ENTIRELY SCRIPTED. 6 months later when the source leaked, they were not halfway there yet.
Nice how they blamed the last release postponement on the hacker, when it was quite obvious that it just wasn't done yet. Braindead AI, incomplete levels, missing models and textures, the list goes on. I wish they'd just admit that they're running behind schedule.
You may disagree, but to be blunt, you're wrong. -tgd

I upgraded my existing machine with a GF FX5950 - mostly so I could play with this game. But with the leaked art of Quake IV and the impending release (eventually) of Doom III and HL2, I'm already saving to build a machine just for gaming. Quad Raptors in Raid-0 with a motherboard full of ram, at 26 years old - this is likely to be the last time I can justify dropping a few grand on building a machine. I play games less and less now, due to work, and friends. Still I keep buying tech toys - rarely for a true need, mostly for the compulsory instinct to buy new toys.
I don't go out to eat, I'd rather cook at home - it's healthier and leaves more money for toys. I'm an IT guy, and frankly I love my job - don't really feel the need for a vacation very often (and I have over 2 weeks vacation left over from last year to prove this), even when it's busy and I put in the occasional 24 hour shift - I don't really mind - just need sleep. My social life and sleep patterns have never been any good, and I usually sleep between 2am and 7am. It's a habit I started back in the early 90's while dialup BBS's kept me up all night. My friends think I'm crazy for opting to spend my nights at home online and alone - instead of out at the bar or club. But for me, I'd rather read a book, watch some TV, and run on the treadmill. I'd rather work under the hood of a car with my friends then sit on the couch or in some bar watching sports. I find little in common with the average people I meet at bars and clubs. I've got a string of short relationships behind me, and I'm just not in the mood for more of the same. My money is saved for tech toys, and the occasional roadtrip/vacation with friends.
Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

"JUNE 6TH, VALVE - In another bizarre and unprecedented turn of events, the long awaited Half-Life 2 will be delayed to a source code leak from a week earlier. Even despite its sales, it is an utter flop. More people still play Starcraft than Warcraft 3. All they did for Warcraft 3 was follow a bunch of marketing droids who said, "We've got hack-and-slash Diablo, and we've got Starcraft. Let's just combine our two biggest money-makers!"
So, we get a dumbed down real-time strategy game with experience points. They limit your strategies and unit count in a claimed attempt to eliminate rushing, but all it does it make it the only way to play--run around levelling your heroes in order to swamp the enemy compound. Every game is exactly the same, and too short.
No data is secure - Gigaquads stolen in 'impossible' hack
Valve discovered this morning that a massive quantity of computer data had been stolen from one of their Central Mainframes.
It is believed around 80 Gigaquads of confidential entertainment data was stolen by this hacker, and was probably copied to a temporary fileserver somewhere on the web.
Valve has said that they are considering all options to catch this hacker, and the corporation that paid him.

So by waiting 6-9 months video cards that will run the games well should be around $200 not at the $400-500 they are now. They can also continue quashing bugs and adding content/levels to the game to extend it's play life and therefore perceived value. Lastly it gives Nvidia and ATI more time to tweak their drivers for the games.

"...Well, there's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam..."
It's a conspiracy and a half, there was no code stolen. The reasons why it was delayed.
1.) The game is waiting longer, so the video card prices will drop lower. Same with CPU prices really.
2.) There are too many bugs anyways, so they need time to fix it.
3.) They need to test how mods fit into the out-of-the-box engine.
4.) They don't want it available in Christmas 2003, cause a million deals later, this will have this game selling for $29.99 by Christmas day.
5.) Directx9a and 9b caused a lot of confusion in 2003. Not the best time to launch a game that tests the water.
Unfortunately, *not at all likely*. Valve is in bed with Microsoft to a very sick degree.
It's unfortunate for me -- I loved the first Vampire game, and would happily shell out for the second, but they made a BAD MOVE by choosing a notoriously MS-centric engine to run their game. So they won't get a cent of my cash. Bummer.

i was having this discussion yesterday about why HL is so good, and aside from all the more obvious reasons (great graphics, variety of puzzles, pacing changes, good story, etc) i was thinking that one of the reasons it's so cool is that the game play requires the kind of attitude that the character would need to have in order to survive. so there's a conherency between the player and the character that i haven't seen in any other game.
I can tell you with assurance that the network code and Steam were not in the stolen source code. The stolen source was very incomplete and pretty much useless for creating cheats. There is no reason to believe the source leak had anything to do with the continuing HL2 delays. The fault lies with Valve's piss-poor program management.
but were the hell is Team Fortress 2?!
That is not how I remember it. Wallhacking, which as I understand it is a driver issue that is very difficult to code against, and speed cheats, which were defeated shortly after they appeared, appeared long before CS went to retail. The only real cure for cheaters was active server moderators. Still is. Server mods, which owe their existance to the open source, could discourage certain kinds of griefing and cheating, but there is no substitute for a good moderator.
Don't moderate flamebait as Troll. Know the difference or you will be Meta-moderated.

It wasn't completely developed by Valve. If you look at the leaked source code you can see that it is actually a derivative of Id Software's Quake source code. Yup, Valve was lying out it being written from scratch by them.
That version of Wine is gone, and from the comments in the thread it looks like it was very old too.
Darwine looks pretty interesting though. If only my MacOS X coding skills were more up to par.
This one is "the game that liscensed the Thief title". It's not being produced by the guys at Looking Glass studios, because Looking Glass no longer exists. Don't expect it to have anything to do with the other Thief games.

Why do I think you are wrong. Half-life 1 was off of the Quake engine, some Quake 2 was also thrown in. Most of the Half-life 2 engine (called Source) is written primarily by Valve. They did license out for some parts of the engine. For instance, they are using portions of the Havok physics engine.

I couldn't care if it was even just a shitty release of the original HL source so we could port the game finally to Linux/*BSD/etc, Valve needs to give back or stop utilizing Linux.
Why do great companies like ID give soooo much to the community, and evil companies like Valve give nothing? ID has not only made each and every game available under Linux, they also routinely release the source to the community! Other groups, like the Atari/Unreal franchise have followed this trend - but not the whores at Valve!
No! The game was delayed because the GAME WAS NOT DONE. Come on people! Do some reading and digging before you post shit about Valve/HL2. A) Going to ship a basically unfinished game and use the masses as beta-testers (maybe even alpha!)
B) Just keep silently delaying it without further explanation.
C) Pull a Duke-Nukem Forever "When it's done" stance.
I don't think it matters too much that the graphics files were stolen. I think what really matters is that the network code was stolen.
That would allow almost unlimited cheating in HL2 on launch..as well presumibly with some big mod releases simultaniously. (Wouldn't you love HL2 engine versions of CS and DoD included on disk?). That WOULD stop me from buying it. I'm glad it's delayed.
Halflife used r_netgraph 1 for displaying netgraph as did q1. q2 simply used netgraph. And the output was very similar to q1 and it seemed to suffer from a lot of the pl issues with q1 under some circumstances. q2 has the best netcode imo something that halflife when first released and for awhile after that had much worse netcode.
Like I said, look at the leaked source code as well as the Quake and Quake 2 source code. The Half-life 2 engine is a derivative of Id Software's engines! You can think that I am wrong all you want, but the source code is hard evidence to the contrary.
Just imagine what a hacker would be able to do if he could understand every bit of the program, including how things are i/o to the RAM. modders can insert malicious code into the mod to exploit a multiplayer hole so that key-readers can upload safely to the originator. You never know what is possible in such a complex game...

PLEASE CANCEL YOUR PRE-ORDERS OF HL-2 PLEASE PLEASE CANCEL THEM
I just cancelled mine tonight, its really the only way to show Valve were not happy as gamers, Put your money towards a game whos developers and publishers are responcible about their release times.
Thanks

killing ur doods on teh spoke!!!!!!!
On the spoke? What's that?
I hear it's being ported to the Duke Nukem Forever engine, as nobody's ever seen (lot alone PIRATED) that source code.
PC's have only two!
It's probably way too early to know anything about this, but does anyone have any information regarding Valve, Team Fortress Software, or a third party planning on creating another team fortress mod for Half Life2?
So HL2 got delayed....most decent games get delayed more than once. The only games that ship on time are buggy pieces of crap. Your life will go on, I promise. (for those of you who happent to die in the interim, I assure you that you won't care about Halflife2 where YOU'RE going)
This message brought to you by the Council of People Who Are Sick of Seeing More People.
With quality code, when the source is viewed by thousands of people, it actually improves your release date. Its called Open Source.
It amazes me that it can take over a year to address security issues in game code that was previously deemed near completion. We're not talking about an operating system here...
is it fair to take pre-orders on a game and not have the game come out for years and years and delay after delay? Software companies how about lets stop pre-orders its not like there is ever a shortage and the people who pre-order dont get the game faster so the advantage is totally on the companys' side. When you start messing around with the people who pre-ordered the game by changing release dates like dirty underwear and then giving total radio silence just to come out to say sometime in summer? So how about some respect for the people who loved your game so much that they paid for something so far in advanced that they wont see it for close to a decade.

You do realize that the source code tree was also set up to build all the HL1 derived games as well, not just HL2 and Source...right?
Even the HalfLife 1 engine has very little working id code left, to the point that valve was looking into sublicensing permission from id, since the HL1 engine used very little quake source anymore. Unfortunately I don't have a link, nor do I know the outcome of that, it was a couple of years ago.
Since when did stolen source code become conclusive proof.

just for hl2 and then they delayed the release after i saw pictures of a friend holding the box in his hand and saying that he had just visited his brother at valve (had pictures taken inside the building as well) and that the game would be out any day.. that was just before the "code theft"
i'm wondering if the real reason is that their credit card takign code was so insecure that theyh're terrified of having their huge customer base fucked over since it's obvious they've been using Steam and Counterstrike as a move towards some form of online pay-for-play system, probably in addition to boxes in stores (many many more people would rather buy the boxes i would imagine, something about having the cd and never having your "subscription" expire...)

They need a little more time to swap Gordon Freeman for the new hero.
If you were blocking sigs, you wouldn't have to read this.
I can't believe this has gone totally overlooked. 2 Weeks before the supposed HL2 release date, Gabe Newell announces Valve's benchmark results, showing ATi superior to Nvidia's top of the range offering. This caused huge uproar, Nvidia owners were being ridiculed and laughed at and Nvidia's cards took a huge blow. In the meantime ATi and Valve secure a nice little business partnership where HL2 is bundled with certain ATi cards. Remember, these benchmarks were released TWO WEEKS before HL2's 'supposed' release date. How many people will have rushed out to upgrade their GFX card in anticipation of HL2? And, thanks to Gabe's results, how many of those people will have bought an ATi card?
So now we're told it'll be released this summer. The benchmark results released last September will be irrelevant, Nvidia and ATi will no doubt have newer hardware available which will run HL2 with ease and by that time, I expect people will be upgrading again.
Gabe, Doug, Valve, whoever, they're all responsible. They insisted on a September 30th release and failed to deliver. The only people to benefit from Valve's lies are ATi, who incidently are partnered with Valve.

Check out the poster's history--almost all trolls and flamebaits.
It's good that they have delayed the release so much because it gives them more time for people to update their graphics cards to be able to play this monster. The sad thing is, it will probably be a very short game because of all the work that went into the graphics, physics, and AI stuff. I'd rather have another full-length half-life 1 style adventure than a very short half-life 2.
Does that mean that we get the HL2 release 6 months before the Northern Hemisphere?
Personally I hope Thief III DOES require a somewhat beefy system. Given the proposed ship date, you can rule out a 4.8 Ghz anything, as QA wouldn't have had time to work with those machines. But basically, you should be able to look at the top 3 vid cards from either nVidia or ATI today and expect those to perform well, mated against the 'typical' shipping processor of the moment. (Something around the 2 Ghz mark)
I would expect it will run on the Athlon64, but probably only in 32 bit mode. Which is just fine by me, as that processor is probably still more than I will pay for today.
As for Thief III being 'weak' - well that has very little to do with system specs, and everything to do with quality game design - something that has been present in this series from the beginning. I can only hope for the best. But to get back to the topic at hand, in order for Thief III to deliver on all the promises of more intelligent AI, better lighting and shadows, more immersive sound, etc. it will need a fairly hefty system. This is the software that prompts people into upgrading, provided it delivers.
Ah, that is just Valve propaganda. Sure there have been plenty of modifications, but HL2's code is still obviously a derivative of Id Software's code... even to the naked eye!
How can Valve claim that it was written from scratch? How can they claim it is not based on Id's code, when it obviously is? Look at the code for yourself!
Truth is that people are just starting to become aware of the fact that Valve is a one-hit-wonder. Gamers are better off being a fan of games, not the people that produce them.
HL1 and mods are always going to be great... nothing can stop that... but Valve seems to have already fallen from grace. They might as well cut to the chase and license the Doom 3 engine and repeat their previously successful formula.
It is called "getting caught with your pants down". So it is not has much as proof as it is a glaring fact!
I'm in the same boat. I picked up a 9600 XT thinking that I'd be playing HL2 sometime soon.
The sad thing is, if you don't download HL2 with Steam, your CD will be shipped in 4-6 weeks after the release date. The irony is that pirated copies will probably be out before the game hits the store shelves.
*sigh*
As long as HL2 *eventually* comes out (and the key I got with my 9600 XT works), I don't mind the wait so much. I've got other games to keep me occupied.
