Half-Life 2 Targeted for Summer Release

Gudlyf writes "According to CNN Money, Valve's director of marketing Doug Lombardi announced that the company is 'currently targeting this summer for the completion of Half-Life 2'. From the article: 'Valve does not plan to reveal any additional information until the time surrounding the E3 trade show, where the game will once again be shown this year. E3 will be held in Los Angeles May 12-14.'" The game was delayed following a previously covered code leak, and the article also notes: "Arkane Studios, an independent French developer that created the critically-acclaimed role-playing game 'Arx Fatalis,' has licensed [Half-Life 2's Source engine] for a forthcoming title [as has Troika's Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines]."

I know I'm getting really off topic here, and I'll probably be modded down for it, but I wondered why a game like Thief couldn't have been done using a simpler engine? (I loved Thief and Thief2, BTW.)

For example, if you treat Thief the way it was supposed to be taken (first person "sneaker") the weaps are just: blackjack and arrows. Arrows fall into different classes: normal, water, fire, moss, line/rope/vine, smoke/gas.

Under that set of assumptions, you could use a fairly simple engine to create a Thief3-like game that keeps you in 3rd person view when you're sneaking around, and puts you 1st person view when you draw your bow (to aim/shoot an arrow). Take the Jak2 engine, for example. You have huge areas (i.e. Haven City) with basically no load time (because new areas are loaded into memory as you approach them.) Add environmental sound, lighting, and enemy AI to give you the feel of the original Thief and Thief2.

That would actually be a fun game. Notice how the game elements of Thief are boiled down to their basic elements that defined the game.

Heck, if you were willing to simplify gameplay even further, you could even use the TombRaider (PS1) engine to do this. And it would still be a fun game, because the basic elements are all there.

But when I read the previews of Thief3, I'm disappointed. They seemed to have started with a set of assumptions: make the game huge, make the levels minutely detailed, make everything dynamic - but those assumptions also require lots of memory to execute. An XBox (or any console today) doesn't have the memory to execute it. So the game was broken down to fit the lowest common denominator: the XBox. Smaller levels, shallow gameplay. Imagine entering a "mist" and selecting "yes" when asked if you want to move to the next region. That entirely takes away from the immersion of Thief and Thief2 (both had passable graphics, even for the time, but were very immersive in their way.)

What could have been a great game (Thief3) was shoe-horned into a small execution footprint because the design was created separately from the considerations of the platforms it would run on.

I guess the bottom line here is: focus on the gameplay elements that define the game, then create your design around that with respect to the platforms it will run on.

What I said (and reafirm) was that I would not support Valve by either paying them for a game or running servers since I've been driven off their games by their failure to support Linux. Basically, it tricked the game into thinking that time was moving at a much faster speed than it actually was. Players could go 200 miles per hour, unload their gun in half a second, etc.

The problem is that vis is far from perfect. If you'd actually used a wallhack (or just some developer commands) you can see the PVS from any position, and you can see exactly how effective a wallhack would be on any map.

Interestingly enough, as a mapper you're trying to prevent the unseen areas from being rendered simply so that the players get better frame rates, but it has the side effect of wallhacks being (slightly) less effective in your map.

It's good that they have delayed the release so much because it gives them more time for people to update their graphics cards to be able to play this monster. The sad thing is, it will probably be a very short game because of all the work that went into the graphics, physics, and AI stuff. I'd rather have another full-length half-life 1 style adventure than a very short half-life 2.

Personally I hope Thief III DOES require a somewhat beefy system. Given the proposed ship date, you can rule out a 4.8 Ghz anything, as QA wouldn't have had time to work with those machines. But basically, you should be able to look at the top 3 vid cards from either nVidia or ATI today and expect those to perform well, mated against the 'typical' shipping processor of the moment. (Something around the 2 Ghz mark)

I would expect it will run on the Athlon64, but probably only in 32 bit mode. Which is just fine by me, as that processor is probably still more than I will pay for today.

As for Thief III being 'weak' - well that has very little to do with system specs, and everything to do with quality game design - something that has been present in this series from the beginning. I can only hope for the best. But to get back to the topic at hand, in order for Thief III to deliver on all the promises of more intelligent AI, better lighting and shadows, more immersive sound, etc. it will need a fairly hefty system. This is the software that prompts people into upgrading, provided it delivers.

Ah, that is just Valve propaganda. Sure there have been plenty of modifications, but HL2's code is still obviously a derivative of Id Software's code... even to the naked eye!

How can Valve claim that it was written from scratch? How can they claim it is not based on Id's code, when it obviously is? Look at the code for yourself!

Truth is that people are just starting to become aware of the fact that Valve is a one-hit-wonder. Gamers are better off being a fan of games, not the people that produce them.

HL1 and mods are always going to be great... nothing can stop that... but Valve seems to have already fallen from grace. They might as well cut to the chase and license the Doom 3 engine and repeat their previously successful formula.
