    No I'm merely pointing out that the statement "only people who never profit form copyright are opposed to it" is logically the same as "all people who profit from copyright support it". Ok it's true (generally), but its also obvious and meaningless. I ask again, so what? What relevance does this have to whether copyright is a good or bad thing?

    Maybe it's true it was half cocked, but the reason France wouldn't join in is that ELF had all the contracts with Iraq for exporting oil once sanctions were lifted.

    The point of this is not speed limit enforcement - it's per mile taxation of motorists, the UK government sees motorists as moving wallets.

    I'm not too familiar with the US system but over here (UK) all cellphones are authenticated with codes downloaded from a central database to the switching station which deals with transferring control between individual cells. As a result tracking which cell a cellphone is in, is trivial.

    I think most people who like to avoid using the mouse and stick to the keyboard will already have something set up. I use conkeror for example. If I was more extreme I'd be using something like ratpoison too. You don't need to provide this for people, they can arrange it themselves.

    "Cunt" is an old word and if it's not included in old dictionaries this must be because of prudery not because it wasn't in use. In fact it goes way back and originally had a perfectly ordinary meaning - specifically a "cleft". The gap in a rope where two strands lie against one another is still called a "cuntline" by riggers and sailmakers.

    Microsoft cannot be trusted and this opening up of the format is in nobody's interest but theirs - if it was any other way they wouldn't be doing it.

    I don't know if it's trickery with patents, or a bait and switch, or some other kind of knavery, but I guarantee you they're going to try something.

    I've got to agree with that. The idea is excellent - the execution appalling! It's obvious he's not run through what he wants to do beforehand, he makes mistakes, spends ages filling in random numbers and so on and on.

    If OOo needs training videos they ought to be a lot better than this.

    You're spot on.

    Their FUD is becoming tired so they've switched to the vapourware tactic.

    It's bollocks - if they make a system that's secure, stable, etc then it'll break all the Windows Apps that are out there. Then if you've got to go through a major migration anyway most rational people would consider what options were available. It changes the question "Which is cheaper, upgrade windows or migrate to linux" to "Which is cheaper migrate to Singularity or migrate to linux". Microsoft lose all the advantage their illegal monopolistic practices give them.

    The more I hear from Microsoft the more desperate they seem lately.

    I installed Debian on my Thinkpad only a few weeks ago and still needed to know all the details you just mentioned and had to edit the xorg.conf file by hand. I also needed to know that my wireless chipset wouldn't work without the 2.6 kernel (not default) and how to install the ipw2200 drivers.

    On the other hand I had previously installed Mandrake without any X configuration problems at all.

    The government wants some security on VOIP because otherwise people will start using secure encryption of their own. Provide simple security by default and most people wont bother with strong methods like VPN which give the government problems exercising their right to monitor their citizens.
