[warning: rant about MSN support only, I leave the other protocols for someone else]
Before one that looks good, we need an MSN client that has file transfers working *always*. Even Gaim has sketchy support at best. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There are lots of technical explanations for that and I know quite a few of them myself, but the bottom line is that if you use Microsoft's MSN client, file transfers always work, fast or slow.
Add to that the fact that in *every* MSN client messages get lost, many times without notification, and you can see a big problem just right there. Disclaimer: I use Trillian because I totally hate the normal MSN client interface, but sometimes I get peeved. Gaim's interface is clunky and ugly at best (used that for a while too).
But ironically, the reason why I can't get people to switch off the regular MSN client is simple: they can't put custom backgrounds, they can't put silly icons, sounds, all that stupid shit. I for one can't fathom just WHY people like that so much, but that's the cold hard reality. No support for those stupid things = no switching apps.
Why do they buy NVIDIA graphic-cards instead of passively-cooled ATI-cards vastly outperforming them?
That was two years ago, right? And I think you're quite wrong about the "passively-cooled" part. Above the absolute lowest video cards, there are almost none that are passively cooled, whether from nVidia or ATI.
Well, I do agree that conflict is usually necessary for change, naturally.
However, *childish* conflict such as this (the spoof site and whatnot) only serves to degradate one's own image, and drag their peers down the same way.
Just what we need: some more kids (or grown-ups acting like kids) fighting among themselves. This is all we need to project that trustworthy Linux and open-source image.
It's about technical stuff, not ice creams. The average Joe can easily decide among 30 flavors of ice cream because he already tasted 300 different kinds of food. However, being it already hard as it is for him/her to use ONE operating system, how about trying to explain the differences among SEVEN of them, especially when they all seem like the same.
Except that in the auto industry, like any other industry, if thousands upon thousands of mechanics told *everyone* that a using a particular brand of oil would fuck up their engine (making a comparison with IE/Outlook Exp. here), then if after some time you were using that brand of oil, it's your damn fault if the engine acts up and yes, you should be chided for it (first-time infractions can walk away free).
Beware that you have a good point there, still, it doesn't apply to some of the stuff "us geeks" have to put up with nowadays.
It's simply a matter of the original purpose. A Slashdotting wouldn't be a DoS because the intention of the visitors would be to look at the hosted article.
The intention for a real DoS would be, with no other purpose whatsoever, to bring the site down.
Outlook 2003, as in contrast to Outlook Express, is actually decent software. Don't mix both up.
Not as long as they're PCI-Express, which roughly means anything from the past 6 months onwards.
That's an easy one. You just ask him where he's from. You will always get to go to the Village of Life.
Duh... The color of fire from a burning server, obviously :)

Sorry about the "free" part, but Navicat is the best MySQL interface that I've seen to date, and I've tried quite a few (not all of them, obviously :)
... if Monarch Computers had put *that* machine as their web-server, maybe we could still reach their site :)
Actually... that would be 3D Realms. Sorry :)
That would be 3D Realms
Proper TechReport's review here.
Go read. Now!
Since when is MD5 (and similar) an "encryption scheme"? It's a hashing algorithm, not an encryption scheme...

I hate Windows lovers who never happened to have many problems with their installs as much as anyone, but that argument there...
Yes, it's really stupid that Microsoft has seven versions of Windows, however... how many different Linux distros are there? 30? 50? 100+?

A comma is an INNER JOIN, dude.
... that this paper falls in the wrong 50%.
Unfortunately, most of the Dilbert comic stripts are quite realistic... :(
Maybe the other 99% of computer users that don't read Slashdot and Don't Care (tm) about such things?
Creative Commons describes John Dvorak as "eye-rolling dumb". Film @ 11.

The French are going to have TWO nuclear fusion reactors. They are becoming a top world power! :D
Maybe a system similar to DNS would be handy here.
