    no the actual college gave them to me... Frontpage and Office XP were retail discs and the rest were OEMs.

    Are they just giving away the upgrade or the entire package? If it's the whole OS that's a pretty good deal... heck I'm betting it will sway a lot of people who are thinking of buying a new PC into buying a Mac.

    How long till we see the switch ads saying "I got my Mac OS for free... Apple is so nice and 1337"

    I got WinXP, Frontpage, OfficeXP, and Visual Studio from MS for being a college student, why didn't we hear about this?

    All this info found will be of no use unless it can surface to mainstream media.

    I doubt any national TV stations other than TechTV read slashdot, this can be seen pretty obviously. Time Magazine just published an article on the music companies using glue to seal in unrelased songs for publications to read... I was in awe because it finally made mainstream about a month after it was on Slashdot!

    Excuse my rant, but it seems that Microsoft has done a pretty good job tucking this firmly under the proverbial carpet and I really doubt it will see the light of day again...

    put a little wax in a foil dish, heat it over an Bunsen burner, then squirt water at it... HUGE fireball... People don't think it will happen, but it does, it also seems to be safer than oil

    Another one my chem teacher did was taking water and separating it into oxygen and hydrogen by using a battery and matching the terminals, then letting the hydrogen into a test tube and light it to make a loud "pop!"

    Also, anything that disolves metal with a liquid is good, like magnesium and acid or such.

    I know americans who can get in quite a jiffy over love and pr0n too. And Brits. And Egyptians. and Chinese. What's the point here? Would this have been modded +4 funny if you s/Chinese/Belgian or something else? I didn't mean it to offend. Heck, Americans give out personal info to fake AOL billing sites... I mean cmon how stupid can you get.

    Everybody likes little novelties that give you viruses, but it would be wrong to give that comment in relation to Americans because that would be off the subject of the statistics of Chinese.

    Don't worry, I'll be the first to make fun of my own kind when statistics come out saying how Americans are 75% more likely to give out into to bogus sites.

    That Chinese people like opening temping attachments that promice love, porn, dancing bears, and greeting cards. O_o

    on a serious note:
    My computer has only been infected twice, both of them rare and harmless viruses. In the past year I have had zero infections... unless you are downloading every single program you can get your hands on or are opening attachments like an AOL newb viruses aren't that big of a problem. (or Kazaa users, but I won't go there. I use WinMX)

    Social Security Number is sort of similar...

    SSN numbers are assigned to every US citizen, that's pretty much were the similarities stop.

    When the SSN system was first put into place the governemnt stressed that it wouldn't be used as an ID number and for social security only.

    If you don't belive me I've seen cases, like at Wal-Mart, where they ask for a SSN for something like a fishing license and the people being asked protest because of what I said above.

    Have a little faith in the USA, they had the right idea in the beginning.

    I think we can ALL agree that any form of "wonder number" is a bad thing.

    Any number/ID that ties YOU into everything that you ever sign up for and every communication device you own is never a good thing. Some things you just want to keep private.

    I can see where this would be good in a business world, where instead of saying "my fax is: ###-####, my phone is ###-#### my email is..." etc. they can just give out one number.

    and Fritz will not be reprogrammed between matches.

    On one hand, the human brain can be reprogrammed to suit the competitor, but on the other hand a brain recodes itself in a manner of speaking, a computer doesn't.

    Perhaps they should make it so it can self-compile changed code? Would be hard, but a definate advantage.

    It's pretty funny to see everybody asking this, while they are only bitching because they can't get their free music without ads and spyware... Don't you think that that's the same thing the RIAA is saying? "how is this not stealing..."

    It's sort of a Catch-22 here. The user is using the software, agreeing to the EULA, and "illegally" (it's arguable) downloading music... What person out there would take a company to court that is allowing them to distribute and download music that a lot of the major companies don't want you to do?

    I'm uneffected by this because i'm a happy WinMX user. I've never had a problem whatsoever, unlike AudioGalaxy and Bearshare (this is awhile ago) that deleted some of my system files, thus making me have to reformat!

    I saw this on TheScreenSavers awhile back. If i recall he had multiple XOSL (www.xosl.org) bootloaders and it worked in chains.. one XOSL would boot another which would boot another etc. until you got to the OS of choice

    The OSes he booted were not all unique kernels, there were about 10 different linux distros if i remember right, and Win 1.0-XP i belive.

    They're busting their asses, putting their time, money, and reputations on the line trying to bring Linux to the masses. Its their distro so cut them a break or roll your own distro and enumerate the releases Mozilla style... To avoid any confustion I wasn't cutting on the developers as much as I was cutting on current "net" society that weighs appearance over functionality.

    I think the Mandrake team is doing a WONDERFUL job and have made a very nice Linux distro for the masses. Go Mandrake!

    It seems that Mandrake has some personal vendetta against the TBM because i've never gotten mine working... I've serached for dirvers and such, but have been diverted to message board posts about how Mandrake hates Turtle Beach.

    I'm running a P3 450MHz right now with a Mandrake/XP dual boot and it's just fine, a little slow, but fine... I tried 8.2 on my old P1 100 (overclocked to 120) and it was painful... i almost cried (j/k) I'm installing slackware right now, i think that's the best distro for me.

    Yes, it's a great loss to the Linux community, but would you really want such a man working on crippleware? I see no problem in his leaving and wish him the best of luck. Maybe he will one day make his own linux distro or something of the sort.
