All you people that think that losing is better are stupid. Losing wouldn't have resulted in repealing the law, it would have resulted in precedents for more of the same.
Even if one day many years from now the law was repealed on account of [losing] this lawsuit so much damage would have happened on account of the precedent losing this lawsuit would have set that it wouldn't have mattered.
you might be thinking we won the battle but we didn't win the war, but I'm thinking that even if one day you win the war, if all the damn battles kill everyone one you know and ravage all your land and destroy all your buildings and ruin generations upon generations of life then it doesn't mean much to win the freaking war, does it?
at least with this battle won, there will be less - not more- battles to win.
If you want to lose a case and get the law repealed, why don't you violate the DMCA in a way taht isn't really violating the DMCA and let some huge company sue your ass and get you arrested and then we'll all talk about how it's good that you lost the lawsuit so that we can appeal to the supreme court and get the law repealed. Meanwhile your kids will grow up without you and some dude will bang your wife and you'll get initiated in prison and most of you life will be ruined. We'll all issue a big thank you in the slashdot comments after the supreme court repeals the DMCA and you'll get to tour the country giving speaches at LUGA conventions.
The obvious next step is to then create a huge database of people and their signature smells.
Then I could find a woman who smells as nice as my first love, but who isn't a cheating whoring selfish bitch.
Seriously, most romance/love/lust is all tied to smells. If you could assemble a database that maps smell types to people you could then create relationships between these smell types, essentially mapping who is attracted to whom, based on their own bio-chemical makeup. Talk about an effective dating service!
Look, here's the deal with broadband. #1 - mindspring makes 3 times as much from Dialup as they do from dsl. why? telco charges for dsl hookup. why? threat of VOIP? bottom line, broadband is not profitable.
#2 - AOLTW made more from dialup business than any other part of this huge conglomerate company. why? dialup is profitable.
#3 - the media industry is afraid of broadband and file swapping, and too afraid to embrace it in an intelligent way.
#4 - the cable/sattelite companies are afraid of broadband
#5 - the phone/long distance companies are afraid of braodband
There are lots of people who will have lose their perch when 100MBPS optic fibre lines are standard in every living room, and they're going to resist that day as much as they can. If they're lucky it will never come, in the USofA that is.
This is nothing new. All versions of QuickBooks that can send statements use Intuit's Servers. The only difference is that before it connected anonymously and now it connects as you. However, there isn't any record of what you send kept by Intuit. They simply use thier email servers rather than your own so that they can offer the deluxe features such as delivery notification and automatic payment reminders.
Lighten up.
If you want to send through your own server just use the SDK, create your own XSL style sheet, update this manually every time you change your template, maintain all the code yourself and quit yer bitchin'.
Exactly. What if a US citizen were to sell a used Playboy on ebay, let's say a corporate pack with the 7-eleven chicks and the Enron girls to some dude in afghanistan. The taliban says that playboy is illegal, and they try to extradite the US citizen for a public stoning in the center of town.
It would never happen.
but the other way around?

I've spent over 48 hours trying to get slackware to work. Finally I got my monitor and X and all that crap to work. Only with KDE, which some say makes me lame, but whatever.
It's at about 124000000X1233402303000 resolution and I can't see shlt. I have to use a freaking manifying glass to do anything.
I still have no sound, despite trying 6 sound cards, 3 of them vanilla sound blasters.
I can't get the damn modem to work.
Other than that, I really like it.
I'm back on windows, but I'm going to try Mandrake next.
I will say that on windows I use open office, mozilla, and other gnu tools as often as I can.
Also, I have a QNX machine and a 3com Audrey (running QNX) and I love those to death. My only problem with QNX is that it won't play sound either, but the audrey does.
Those sound cards all work in windoze.
Why don't we just f$cking nuke the whole damn planet. Jeesh.
I understand some destuction for progress's sake, like all the crap that's used when you make a micropocessor and runs into the water and gives everyone in silicon valley Autism. That's ok because I have an XP2200+ and I have a pathetic PUR water filter from Target(tm) for $19.95.
But this is just f$cking irresponsible. It's as bad as AOL, who also should be sued by environmentalists. We don't have enough space in landfills as it is. These dip shits should be shot.
or jlo and ben are getting married
or some other nonsense crap is more important for the media owned news to help the media parent sell movies/records.
I'll add to this. I actually didn't want the Tivo, but my wife was having a hard time taping her shows now that she works nights. So she was using both vcrs on both tvs just to make sure that at least one would get the show, and I was stuck at home with two tvs on the same damn crappy show, and no wife to boot.
so we buy a tivo, the direct TV kind and now I've even updated to run the second tuner.
I love the tivo for these reasons.
#1 - rewind live tv. Instant replay. I'm just like ABC Sports now. I can see the replay.
#2 - super slow mo. I'm even more like ABC Sports. I can watch it over and over again in slow motion. The only thing I can't do is change camera angles or draw with the yellow line like John Madden. This is great for close fouls, And1 trick plays and women's tennis too:-)
#3 - Two tuners, plus replay. So check this. On the one night of the week when there are two shows to tape (Fast lane and Bird's of Prey) if I don't want to watch either, I can play from the harddrive a show that is already recorded. So you're recording from both tuners and watching a third show.
#4 - It is dead easy to program, the UI is super friendly.
I have an ATI AIW, but it's not nearly as easy to use as the TIVO. The PC/AIW is good for hands on capturing (like if you're making a collection) the Tivo is click and forget.
My only whine is that there is only 1 channel list. The satbox we had prior to the directivo allowed up to 4 channels, and a special hot list that worked like the window selector in linux desktops. We had one for her, one for me, one for sports channels and one for family channels.
I hope to god their geek snipers.

quote from the article itself
"When you consider the fact that the largest American telecommunications firms are often part of the same mega-corporation with music, video or movie-producing entertainment divisions -- such as AOL-Time Warner -- you can see how an industry-regulated Internet would handily end music and movie industry worries about Napster-like file swapping by people who don't want to pay industry-monopolized retail prices for content. I live near the San Francisco Bay, and it's no suprise that around here affordable housing is a misnomer. The obvious solution is to pave the bay. If we were to take the SF bay and build supports, much like they build for bridges, but instead a matrix of supports for "land" we could turn most of that land into housing.
What's more is that we could save lots of money on plumbing and trash pickup by just letting everyone dump beneath the platform into the bay.
