    Jesus, man. Okay... so you didn't read the article because it is /.ed, but you can at least read the summary! It's streaming using swarming and it provides smooth progressive playback of content. Streaming itself is very old. But streaming while swarming is news.

    And by 10 Mbps, you mean a bit under 1 Mbps, right?

    Bluetooth has bandwidth of about 720 kbps, if I recall correctly. This makes it suitable for most applications, but lacking in several others. For example, high quality Bluetooth headphones (not phone quality Bluetooth headsets) would be possible with triple the bandwidth, but aren't really possible with current Bluetooth.

    I did read their website and it looks like their revolutionary new replacement for TCP is UDP with their proprietary ECC built on top of it. However, there is a good reason why TCP never used ECC (they did exist back then).

    1) The major problem a TCP packet will face is getting dropped. They mention this problem. They claim their encoding will solve this problem. It won't. No ECC algorithm will allow you to recover a dropped packet.

    2) Most packets that are corrupted are corrupted well beyond the repair of most ECCs.

    3) ECCs will cause packet size to increase. Not a huge problem, but why do it when ECCs don't help too much to begin with?

    You should check your facts. Wikipedia has a great discussion of this. As the grandparent said, there are certainly a lot of connections to Oregon. There are also a lot of connections to a lot of other states. No mention of Indiana though. Honestly, there is no place on Earth where Springfield could exist, which is part of the joke.

    Also, 3DES is about as good as AES with regards to security, but magnitudes slower. Thousands of cycles compared to AES's 100 cycles.

    Technically, it isn't AES if you are using a 256 bit key. AES specifically defines a 128 bit key. If you use anything higher than that, you're using Rijndael.

    Hate to break it to you /.ers, but Linux isn't free in a corporate setting. I don't know if the TCO is mroe or less or equal than Windows, but it definitely isn't free.

    Sure, you can get Linux for free off any website. However, a company is probabl going to want support for the OS. That costs money. In addition, a company is going to need people to administer the servers. Again, this costs money, both in saleries and training costs.

    The only time is Linux is free is when you use it on a home machine and it is your hobby.

    The comparison with the Sharp Zaurus is sort of stupid. The OQO is meant to be a compact PC, not a personal digital assistant. Comparing them is somewhat stupid.

    However, if you must compare them, I think the OQO is light years ahead of the Zaurus. 1 GHz processor, lots of RAM, 10 GB HDD, Firewire, Full-size USB, the ability to run non-embedded OS, etc. I'm personally going to be very willing to shell out $1500+ for one of these. Being able to carry an actual PC (not a quasi-PC) in my pocket is beautiful.

    Since forever. In the English language, there are a few idioms used to describe mathematical concepts.

    "times less" == division
    "times greater" == multiplication

    By your logic, if I say "A is 10 times greater than B" and B is 1, does that mean A is 11?

    In reality, "A is 10 times greater than B" is equivalent to saying "A=B*10". As such, "A is 10 times less than B" is equivalent to saying "A=B/10".

He said that there are a lot of things wrong with the book and that when it comes out, he would probably help criticize it to the fullest. He, however, is waiting for it to come out to the public out of respect for the publishing process.

    Actually, they are not related. Multiple Personality Disorder (more accurately known as Dissociative Identity Disorder) is a dissociative mental disorder. Schizophrenia is a very seperate classification of mental disorders. What cause schizophrenia and dissociative disorders is very different and the symptoms are very different.

    Not only are the two not the same thing, they are COMPLETELY unrelated.

    Ummm, you realize this is true for ANY email service? Any mail server is hosted on a server can can go down or crash. In fact, I would trust Google or Yahoo or MSN more. They usually have clusters of servers. If one goes down, it is unlikely that the other 99 aren't going to go down. And they keep regular backups and such.
