It's a double-edged sword....what responsiblity should the card companies take for thier irresponsible lending practices. For goodness' sake, if you can fog a mirror, you can get credit. If fact, the way the rates are structured on credit cards, the credit card companies EXPECT to write off a percentage of the portfolio. This write-off is insignificant (in relative terms) to the profit they make on the poor saps out there paying 21+% on their accounts. The overnight rate on this money is what, 4%?
And being the ever-greedy corporate pigs, the banks now petition congress to pass "Bankruptcy reform" laws, which essentially prevent Mom and Pop consumers from walking away from their debts after filing bankruptcy.
I'm not saying it's morally or ethically right to allow folks to take a free ride on the system, but at the same time, the credit card companies have at least half the blame due to their lending policy.
The difference is that they (the banks) have deep pockets with which they can buy legislation.
Yes, I do work at a bank...and no I would NEVER contribute to their PAC.
BRAVO!!!! Is that an original idea of yours? I absolutely love it! In fact, the taxes should increase over time. Then only the most profitable would not end up in the public domain!
You could add the US to the top of that list, pal.
What's worse: a country openly proclaiming communism, or one that espouses freedom -- all the while attempting to deny it's own citizens the right to freely travel and increasing surveillance in the name of "fighting terror". Oh, and not to mention all of the "detainees" held in Gitmo. These folks, while probably a bad lot, are being held without being charged with a crime, denied access to legal representation, and in some cases have had thier HUMAN RIGHTS violated. This is the kind of shit that I used to bring up about Cuba and China.
As a user of Linux, I'm certainly biased against MSFT, and I'm sure many Mac users are the same. Perhaps this is what Bill needs to be exploring!
Google doesn't make any judgements about what OS/Browser I use, it's products generally work with all the major offerings. Therefore, they get the traffic.
Microsoft, on the other hand, seems to remind users of non-MSFT products that they aren't getting the best experience without using one of their products. Well, now that we have an alternative, who needs MSFT? They are making themselves obsolete.
All of Microsoft's offerings seem to be aimed at creating a dependence on their core products -- Windows and Office. This has made them the richest company on the planet, but the rules, they are a'changing. Microsoft finds itself competing, again, with free -- now on two fronts: Online and OS (and soon to be three, with Office, if Google gets involved with Open Office)
I don't rule them out -- but there will be some painful battles yet to come -- perhaps in the patent arena. But if it comes to that, it will be a clear indication that they've run out of ideas.
Remember to keep separate the American citizens from the American Government(TM). The citizens are a fun-loving group, who generally like Canadians, Europeans, Asians, and Australians very much. The latter is a sock puppet for the corporation.
Sadly, the people haven't been in charge for decades.
IMHO Getting rid of the menus are one of the positive aspects of backing up your dvds...just put the thing in and it plays the feature -- no fbi/interpol warnings, no previews, no stupid effects -- just the movie
Where I was putting several episode on one disk, I hand crafted a menu using the GIMP.
It's kind of a pain to sort thru all that info, but once you create a menu successfully, it's a snap to repeat.
Lastly, regarding dvdshrink, I use tcrequant, which I believe is part of the transcode package. Use a requant factor of 1.66 to crush the size of the video with very little noticable loss of quality.
And really lastly, DVD:RIP is neat, but you can just as easily script the process, which helped me learn a little more about what I was doing.
Sadly, Microsoft's goal is Not to create cutting edge or innovative software; it is simply to dominate the market.
The amount of cash they have amassed has allowed them to bully other companies (as well as consumers).
I personally think they peaked back in the Win95 era.
Sadly, much of American business is like this...when you can't out-innovate, then intimidate. When that doesn't work, litigate.

I hate the corporate world; it's so constraining -- even if it does pay the bills...

WOW (as I drool), buy a CD, get a bong hit!
Oh I love personal attacks... I place greater importance on getting our troops out of the middle east, where they don't belong.

Totally agree...in fact, if it weren't for SUN releasing so much of the Star Office code, would Open Office be anywhere near where it is today.

I suppose you could say the same about GM and Ford back in 1970.
Microsoft has (and keeps) the marketshare because 99.999% of the storebought PCs have Windows pre-loaded.
If consumers had to shell out $199 for a copy of Windows when purchasing a new box, you'd see a much different picture.
Dear Sir/Madam,
The Church Lady was a bit on Saturday Night Live featuring Dana Carvey.
But your reply seems genuinely sincere and well thought out!
And who do you worship, little man? Is it....SATAN??? -- the Church Lady

What about when you've only been accused. Innocent until proven guilty, or something like that? (US) Think before you post, Poindexter!
That would be gopchop for the non-MS crowd. Works pretty well, too!
