  1. As a cashier... on Retail Fraud on the Rise · · Score: 3, Informative
    I'm a cashier at Staples, working behind the customer service desk at this moment. Not very busy right now, not much to do. May as well respond to this discussion.

    I know that it is stupidly difficult to commit retail fraud at Staples. Trust me. Why? Our all-encompassing POS system. Transaction histories, the ability to dig out a past receipt (no more "I lost it, but here's the item"), and linked transaction numbers. That, combined with checking the returned products (no computers filled with potatoes) and so on, make it that much more difficult for lowlife thieves.

    In the 6 months I have worked here, the only crime I have heard about was all physical. Taking the box and running, taking a product out of the box and sneaking it out, etc. Pretty much all of the crimes committed in our stores are posted around the district. There are not too many of these, thankfully.

    The article also talks about returning products being counted as fraud. I have not seen any evidence of it here. Of course, we don't sell fancy clothes you just want to wear once or whatever, but we flaunt our "bring it back in 30 days for any reason" policy and it doesn't even matter if they are just trying it out. If it's in saleable condition, sell it. Otherwise, return it to the manufacturer as defective. I don't see any problem. It might be a problem with the smaller retailers, but most of them also don't have return policies like we do.

    Time to go, a customer is approaching the service desk.

    I just beat the game last night... It's longer than the first one, and overall, MUCH better. I couldn't understand it (JP version), but you don't need to know any Japanese to play it. I'm definitely picking it up and beating it again as soon as it's released in North America.

  6. 1U cooling on How to Keep Your Computer Cool · · Score: 2, Interesting

    When it comes to rackmountable servers, I know that you need to get specialized cooling... When I got my 1U case, I put the system in (AXP 2400+), got a 1U fan and some silver heatsink compound for it, and tried it out, yet it overheats like mad.

    It works completely fine with the top of the case off, but I'm probably missing some info someone more experienced would know. Of course, it may be either a design issue with the case or maybe the AXP just runs too hot for something like a 1U. Does anyone here have some tips for cooling systems like this? If necessary, I can provide details when I get home.

    Just for clarification, I was talking about not being able to get a .5tb array for this price. Even the 50gb one lists for $33 each on Pricewatch. That'll bring up the price of the drives alone to $330.

    So all geeking aside, for this project we choose the Seagate Barracuda SCA SCSI line of drives. There are several models you can choose from, the "ST118273LC" 18.6 GB drive is readily available on eBay for about $5.00 a drive, or the "ST150176LC" 50.1 GB at about $15.00 each. I was fortunate enough to get a "Bulk Lot" of the 50 GB model for about $70.00.

    And what about us not so fortunate enough to stumble upon deals like this?

    If that's the case, why don't they just implement other money-making schemes?

    • After patent is granted, third parties may drop them a note if they know of prior art. Company gets a patent revocation fee.

    I'm pretty sure this will stop companies from trying to patent everything under the sun. Even patent whoring companies like IBM would think twice about the stuff they try to patent.

    No, they reverse engineered the only existing BIOS, made by IBM. The way they did it was as legal as reverse engineering could get (before the DMCA) though;

    1. Some people study the BIOS, writes everything he finds out about it
    2. Some other people, with no history of reverse engineering anything or having any kind of history with IBM (that includes not even using one of their PCs) make their own BIOS based on the research in step 1

    I doubt this project followed these steps. Oh well; someone else can always make another project based on this guy's code (as long as it's GPLed). Legally, too.
