The reason for this is cost. Back in the C64 and Atari days, an entire game could be made - and made WELL - by just one or two guys. In fact, many games - good games - were made by hobbyists.
Flash forward to now, where companies need millions of dollars to make a game just compete in the advertisements. So they put all of their money in things that are more likely to get that sale. Things like flashy graphics, expensive ad campaigns, and big license franchises. When they have paid for all of that and the latest development environments to make them with - gameplay gets $3.67 left in the budget.
There are a TON of games with GREAT gameplay that don't sell well because they don't have hookers and pimps or lowered honda civics. In todays market - if you make a great game, just throw it away - unless you can put in blood, gore, and sex. Otherwise it is relegated as a "kiddie" game.
If I am going to invest $20million on a game, I want it to sell - not to be fun...
Our college did batch runs for all sorts of stuff. We only had about 3000 students, but between faculty and staff it worked out to around 5000 people in various systems. Things had to run to calculate and process dorm room phone bills, cafeteria plans, accounts payable and recievable, invoices, transcripts, and DOOM wads...
And we were small. I can only imagine what a big school with 30 to 50 thousand students would need done... Not to mention all the DOOM3 wads nowadays.;)
Well, I agree with you. I think that the President is a moot point, it is the Administration that really counts.
Unfortunately, even though I am voting Kerry, and I am extremely anti-Bush, you lost all credibility when you mentioned Moveon.org. It's like trying to use Bowling for Columbine or F9/11 in an argument... The minute you mention them, you lose. Sadly.
Me neither. Episode one was so bad, I never even had ANY desire to see Episode 2. And the last money I spent on StarWars was the last ORIGINAL release on VHS (pre SE).
But I have bought probably 300 DVDs since that same timepoint, and seen countless movies... But it is PIRACY remember, that is causing lost sales. Couldn't possibly be Overpriced CRAP causing the decline...
Uhmm, the jobs that most people have so that they can have money to buy Star Wars crap? I didn't mean to imply that they had been "hard working" on the Star Wars movies. Billionairres telling me I don't matter, then asking me to fork out $50 for them - really pisses me off. In any market. Sports. Video games. Cars. I *work* for my money, and you should appreciate me as a CUSTOMER. If I treated my customers(clients) the way Lucas did in that interview - I would not have customers(clients) very long.
What an asshole. He basically said: "I know all the hard working and loyal fans want the originals but they can all go suck themselves off because I own the crap and I am god. But it's all OK because they'll bend over and take it anyway."
And the worst part is that, based on the way he opened the interview, if we all decide to *not* buy this crap, they will blame the poor sales on PIRACY - not the fact that he is making a high priced product that people don't REALLY want (again).
Even your own link states that Sendmail shipped first in BSD 4.1c, which was not released until late 1982. Sendmail's PREDECESSOR - "delivermail" dates back to 1979.
Not that this all matters - but I find it funny when in a discussion about quality control, people don't bother to get their facts at least kindof accurate...
But to stay at least a little relevant to the discussion at hand - I would wager that the simple act of being 22 years old is one of Sendmail's problems. I mean geez, how much have computers, networks, and Unix itself changed in 22 years? Would I trust *any* 22 year old software to work in my current environment flawlessly? Poop no! Sure, some components and concepts can last - but it has already been stated that Sendmail was not designed with these uses in mind, and that we should stop trying to use a wrench to hammer in a nail. By this same logic I could say that Windows 3.1 / DOS is a buggy buggy web server. Sure - you *can* conceptually serve web content from it, but it is a little outdated to do so...
Unfortunately, you SHOULD care. American politcis affect the lives of every person on the planet - like it or not.
But in the bigger picture, you should contribute... If you can help one person see the facts about international politics - you have helped the cause...
In the mean time, we will try and make it so that our politics impact you less... It might not be soon, however...
1. Where did I say I supported a Libertarian for President? I can't like a quote from a Libertarian without wanting to elect him for President?
2. Where did I say that I supported tax subsidies for farmers? I merely am trying to point out that we subsidy a whole lot of things... It seems to me that food is more worthy than some of the other crap. But the real fact of the matter is that it is way more complex than a Slashdot comment can handle...
3. Why can't a person believe in and support pieces of multiple political party platforms? Why do we have to fit into the "mold" and only tow the party line? What would you say if I told you that I actually agree with some things from ALL the political parties, and I disagree with things from ALL the political parties (and I am talking about internationally as well, although I am not sure if they always call them parties in most nations...) The "one size fits all" attitude is what is causing our political system in the USA to go to crap. Vote the cantidate and the election - NOT the party. What is best for the COUNTRY as a WHOLE? If it benefits only one party - how can it be good for the WHOLE country?
Because "real jobs" won't put food on your table, moron. All of the "fertile" and "wet" areas have been turned into strip-malls, freeways, and soccer fields...
Come to think of it the oil industry is highly subsidized by tax dollars. Why don't they all get "real jobs"? How about the education system... It is funded with tax dollars too.. They should get "real jobs" as well.
I don't particularly like my tax dollars going to fund 10 lane freeways to the suburbs either - but sh1t happens.
Don't switch to AT&T then.... Verizon has by far the best coverage. I have experience with Sprint, AT&T (GSM and other..) and T-Mobile. T-Mobile and AT&T are the worst companies I have dealt with. Sprint had the best company but worst coverage. Verizon has outstanding coverage, and I have no problems with the company so far (just over a year now). But I don't have a crippled $500 phone either...:)
In all of the Mozilla browsers, on XP SP2 at work and OSX at home, Slashdot overwrites the lefthand "menus" and the main section text - about a fifth of the time. Usually a re-load will fix it. This is present in Mozilla, Firefox, and Camino.
It is this that makes me want to not support this guy or his game.
For one, I use Mac OSX. For two, some people don't *like* having to tweak their computer to get it to run(ala Linux). For three - some people HAVE to use Windows (for work or some lame reason like that...). For four - no one doubts the merits of Open Source until they go on tirades like this one.... It's like extremo Democrats who protest violently - they only ultimately hurt the cause.
It could be that our definition of "yuppie techno elite" is different... I would say that "techno elite" use linux. And I would say that "yuppies" no longer exist in the way they were when the name was coined... Now there are probably more "yuppies" in the Suburbs than anywhere "urban", and "professional" has changed in the past couple decades as well. Not to mention the spread of traditionally "yuppie" things to the mainstream - like Starbucks and cell-phones...
But I think the Unixness of OSX is attracting more non-traditional-Apple customers to Apple.

Remind me not to go where you come from, then.
This could go on forever. What the hell could anyone besides Eminem have against Moby?

Dan Rather says so.

How many "Gordon Gekko"s with columns/sites named "Enter Stage Right" can there be?

Oh, so THATS what PIRACY is... All this time I thought they meant copying things... Glad to have that all cleared up... ;)
It is always nice when people criticize movies they have not even seen. Kind of like people commenting on articles they have not even read.

First off, MS hasn't even been *around* for 25 years.
Wrong.
Microsoft was founded in 1975. That makes it 29 years old, by my math.
Look for example, at Sendmail. It's 25 years old
Wrong.

Here is a clickable link for Total Recorder, a Windows app.
If you use a Mac you can try Audio Hijack.
I live in Minnesota. The winters are mild compared to places like Antarctica.

I second the VueScan recomendation. It is very good software, well worth it's price.
Because the WiFi users on the street is a Majority.
The guys site is called "oracleguy", but from his site:
"It supports Access, Microsoft SQL Server, and MySQL databases."
Where is Oracle?
