But don't you have to buy all those same things with other companies as well? How is Apple any different? We bought my sister a HP laptop about 3 months ago (her school provides support for their teachers and they won't support anything but Windows). We paid $1400 for the laptop, $200 for the extended warranty (it came with 90 days), it only came with 256 RAM so I upgraded it to 1GB, and we paid $100 for a basic laptop satchel. All in all it was about $1800 total cost.

Apple actually STARTED with virtually ALL of the PC market share (Apple II years), and has been losing market share every year since then. We don't need to rehash the market share vs. installed base and related arguments. Apple does not cater to yuppie techno elite, however they *are* more popular with artist types. But I am a software developer who switched when Apple OSX hit the market because it is the nicest *nix I have ever used. And I'll tell you what - I have had many many fewer issues with the 5 Macs in my home than with the PCS that I had prior. I was constantly tinkering and fixing with my Windows/Linux PCs. I decided - I do that all day - I want to have computers that are nice to use when I come home. And now I do, thanks to my Macs and OSX.

But the claim was that Apple only sells > $3000 computers. That is false.

  7. Re:No, Apple won't benefit. on Real Feels iTunes Backlash · · Score: 1

For the billionth time. Apple didn't use a propietary FORMAT. iTunes by default rips CDs to AAC which is not propietary. In fact, it is part of the MPEG 4 standards. iTunes and iPods also support MP3 and uncompressed music. The iTunes music store exclusively sells music encoded using AAC, again - MPEG 4 STANDARD. Apple's FORMATS are not propietary.

Apple DOES use a propietary Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme for songs purchased at the iTunes Music Store , and ONLY for songs purchased at the iTunes music store. These songs can be used on up to 5 computers and along with that up to 5 iPods (one connected to each computer - not exactly but basically this is the idea). Apple HAD to include the DRM to sell music online, or they would not have been given the license to sell the music. The DRM requirement is NOT from Apple, in fact the Apple didn't want to use DRM in the first place. But it is a necessary evil for legal online sales from the big record labels.

There is nothing propietary about that. AFAIK there is no DRM standard that works across all platforms and players. If there is ever a DRM standard developed I would bet Apple would support it the same way they support MPEG 2, MPEG 3, and MPEG 4 standards.

No, you make a signifcant overgeneralization. You make it sound like poor people are dying on the street from lack of health care. The US has Universal health care. ANYONE can walk in to a hospital off the street and get heath care if anything serious is wrong with them and the hospital MUST take them and MUST give them the same treatment and it comes out of the American taxpayers wallet.

Not true. Emergency rooms must take you in and treat your SYMPTOMS enough to STABILIZE you then they can throw you out.

But that does nothing to solve the problem.

Emergency room visits are much more expensive than Dr. visits. Why not give people the Dr. visits and keep them out of the emergency rooms? I would hate to be in a car wreck and die because the ER was full of people with the flu...

And what happens to the health care system once the government takes over? In places like Canada it the average time it takes is 2 weeks to see a doctor. How motivated will the nurses and doctors be to take care of you? Ever been to motor vehicles in the US? That is what you can expect if the US government takes over health care. It's been proven time in and time out, taking away choice and handing an industry over to government never works as well as letting the free market decide things.

I am glad that you have good personal experience with all of the other countries medical care. But Since all I have is strictly anecdotal evidence, I can only give that... I have two Canadian friends who work here in the states, and both have health coverage in the US. For most things they drive back to Canada for health care because they like the system there better, and our HMOs suck. I work with 5 people from the UK and one from Germany. All 6 prefer their former health care to our "managed care" options. And I have had GOOD health coverage for my entire career, and it still takes me two weeks to get in to the Dr. In fact, even if I paid CASH I couldn't get in to see my Dr. in two weeks... And forget about dental coverage....

Oh, and I have never had a problem at the DMV either - except it took quite a while to get a slot to take a test once, but nothing major...
