See .04? That's the radius of the central mass in meters. Convert is to furlongs, multiply is by 2 to get the diameter, then convert it to centimeters. You'll get approximately 8 cm.

Isn't this how eBay already works?
No, eBay auctions are not "blind". Everybody can see the winning bid at any time. When buyers see the winning bid grow, they can increase their maximal amounts and thus the winning bid amount. Sniping avoid contributing to the growth of the winning bid by delaying the bid to the time when other buyers don't have time to revise their maximal bids.

Merritt Parkway is one of the most beautiful roads I've seen, and it could be argued that the short ramp are part of the experience, just like trees on the median and the funny looking font on the road signs. The turns and the short ramps force the drivers to drive slower and enjoy the road covered by the canopy of trees. Besides, Merritt Parkway is not a part of the Interstate system. I believe it's Connecticut's route 15.

It seems to me that the "format war" Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD will remind the ATM vs Gigabit Ethernet as couple of years ago. People will stay with things they know (Ethernet, DVD) as long as they are seen as reliable (unlike e.g. floppies), and the technologies seeking to supplant (rather than upgrade) them will seek refuge in the server rooms next to SCSI and Fiber Channel.

Because Word format is not guaranteed to work on future computers. Microsoft can switch to a different format or go bankrupt. An open standard is open for everyone to implement on any OS.

As for "de-facto standards" - even de-facto standards are supposed to be documented and open to competitors. Standards exist for more than one entity to adhere to. Otherwise it's a "de-facto monopoly".
