I tried out Jabber a while ago, but grew frustrated with it and switch to Trillian. (www.trillian.cc) The downside to Trillian is that it's Windows-only for now.
ha! ain't that the truth. yeah, my little rant was and is off-topic but still...the parent of my original response was also marked troll for a while. I really wish more legit people would meta-moderate to help get this crap under control. Though, I have the sinking feeling that someone's found another way to exploit the system with bot and it won't do a lot of good...
This is exactly correct. There's no reason to back up what one already has on disk. In the event of a disk failure on, say, a Windows machine, there's no reason to need a backup of the whole disk when one has the install disks for the OS, Office, and whatever games you have.
My backups consist of web design work, and that's basicly it. I have a rolling backup on a CDRW and it works great.
and not any longer hours than any other profession (shorter than most, in fact).
This is complete bullshit. Teachers work a ton of extra hours at home and at school. If not grading papers it's in after school activities because there's no budget to hire more employees.
Teachers work more hours per week than anyone I know.
The thrust of money towards computers and "technology" in the education system is one that has bothered me for some time as well.
It's done with the claim that US kids will get "left behind" if they're not wired in and wired up 24-7. The claim is that we're educating kids on how to use computers for tomorrow.
Have you ever seen a kid who didn't know how to work a computer after a few short sessions? Most of these kids are already on their way to becoming l33t hax0rz in a matter of weeks.
We don't need computers for education we need education for education.
Just because little Johnny didn't have 802.11(n) when he was a kid doesn't mean he's going to be working in the mill for the rest of his life. But forgo the hard sciences and the English books for laptops and you've given him a crutch forever.
Clifford Stoll, the man who wrote "The Cuckoo's Egg" wrote, not too long ago "High-Tech Heretic." It deals with exactly this issue. He questions the "...relentless drumbeat for 'computer literacy' by educations and the computer industry..." His arguments on this issue are well thought out and did indeed change my mind about the roll of computers in the education system here in the US.
The current round of moderation (stretching as far back as this summer) is clearly designed to undermine/. moderation. Very valid posts are getting modded into bizzare places.
I just got back into metamoderation because of this.
A digital SLR camera would be nice but not likely. Blowing a couple $K on a digital camera would be good and geeky and I know I would actually use it, but without any return on the investment, it would be difficult to justify.
Since this summer (or winter if you're below the equator) there has been a concerted effort to completely f the moderation system. Someone(s) or something(s) are specificly targeting good posts and modding them down. Individual posters have been targeted as well.
The only thing to do about it is to metamoderate and make sure lame behavior like modding your parent post "Flamebait" get's marked "Unfair"

Well yes. There's always going to be "the stupids" moderating....but it seems that lately, there seems to be a more concentrated effort to mod down good quality posts. I don't know if it's just me seeing things (or wanting to see things) but the concentration seems "higher" somehow.
Anyway, at least there still are some intelligent people with mod points to balance...
I think the FBI should keylog trolls like you.

troll? jesus christ. I give up bandwidth and get marked as a troll?
the moderation system here is so fucked up.
Not that there's much to it, but here's a mirror of the image mentioned in the post:

"doesn't contain" is very much an option.
/any/ info from an email header to allow or deny.
There's also a "customize" option where you can enter in
Email filters work fine for me, but for usenet, I don't even see where the option to filter is available. Aside from "ignore this thread" that is.
But as for email, I'm not sure what more can be done. You can set up as many filters as you want for each account...
I did say "basicly" it. ICQ lists take up what? a few k? I don't game so no worries there, and config settings are easily re-instated.

Your argument could apply to JPG's as well if you see enough 500K imagemap driven pages.

I stuck around and got a second degree as well. Only needed to stay an extra year. It's a great thing to do if you can afford it or can get the loans.
:)
Plus you can put down 2 degrees in your resume

I did, for quite a while, metamoderate every day...but I fell out of the habit of doing it...this is a good reason to come back to it.
