Guerrillas armed mostly with small arms forced my country out of Afghanistan in 1989. And the Red Army wasn't as keen on keeping civilian casualties low. During WW2 (which as far as weapon destructiveness is concerned I consider a part of the modern era) resistance in Nazi occupied Eastern Europe and Russia successfully disrupted Nazi operations, especially in places where terrain obstructed large scale armor movement.

The freshman curriculum for a math major (you pick your major when you submit your application) is (per week) 1) Mathematical Analysis: 4 hours of lectures, 4 hours of problem solving seminars 2) Higher Algebra: (Algebraic structures, vectors spaces and so on) 4 hours of lectures, 4 hours of problem solving seminars 3) Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry: 2 hours of lectures, 2 hours of problem solving seminars 4) Number Theory: 2 hours of lectures, 2 hours of problem solving seminars 5) Theory of Algorithms: 2 hours of lectures, 2 hours of problem solving seminars 6) Introductory CS: 2 hours of lectures, 2 hours of labs 7) History of Russia: 2 hours of lectures, 2 hours of seminars 8) Physical education: 2 hours I've been to the US and I've never seen anything like that. And picking a math major is considered "slacking", if you are unfortunate enough to pick Physics major you get almost as much math + physics + killer LABS every day. During your third year you're supposed to find a working scientist and under his guidance produce a thesis. This is why the parent said that the degree is equivalent to US Masters.

Impressive but useless, that's not how you demonstrate if you want to achieve something. And I'm not talking about resorting to violence. Prolonged hunger strikes are effective too. But I guess noone cared enough to really put their heart into it.

You are unfair to him, he used to do just that - rewriting the code he disagreed with from scratch: The book "Free as in Freedom" talks about a curious episode that happened during the Symbolics War.

When Symbolics stopped sending over its source-code changes, Stallman responded by holing up in his MIT offices and rewriting each new software feature and tool from scratch. Frustrating as it may have been, it guaranteed that future Lisp Machine users had unfettered access to the same features as Symbolics users. It also guaranteed Stallman's legendary status within the hacker community. Already renowned for his work with Emacs, Stallman's ability to match the output of an entire team of Symbolics programmers-a team that included more than a few legendary hackers itself-still stands has one of the major human accomplishments of the Information Age, or of any age for that matter. Dubbing it a "master hack" and Stallman himself a "virtual John Henry of computer code," author Steven Levy notes that many of his Symbolics-employed rivals had no choice but to pay their idealistic former comrade grudging respect.

The reason he doesn't do this anymore is that having gained the notariety he can more effectively advance his causes by traveling around the world and giving lectures and interviews than by spending all his time reimplementing every cloised source programme. That would be dumb indeed.

Just like VMS of yesterday, Solaris of today is the best option to handle the data load of today, and yes the market is growing and there is no shortage of data.
