well it's not all they do heh... but in terms of using the computer thats what they do... kids today are really dumb... they might be using their computer to write something... but most of the time it's movies and music.
People always seem to point to free art... and claim the "beethoven" model works. Okay friend.. it's not the middle ages... it's the 21st century... that model "doesn't work" anymore.
I saw a free song called "poop in the pool".... I have no interest in that.
I do have a lot of interest in "good music" like Pink Floyd.
One of them is free... the other one is not.
I understand where everyone is coming from regarding extreme laws... but honestly I've been to college...
and all most people do in their dorms is sit around and 'steal' movies and music.
It would be nice if movies and music were free... but they cost a lot of money to make and a lot of work goes into them... older methods of distribution just aren't effective... and at the same time everyone (including the artists) is basically losing money... and if they just let that happen one day they won't have much money.
So whats the solution? Come up with a solution...
It doesn't do anyone any good to say "that doesn't happen"... because I'm here to tell you that yes it does... a lot.
The only reason I was against any laws holding people responsible (at least to some degree) for copyright infringement is because the government was fascist and the punishments were extreme... and because they were trying to use the courts/criminal charges to force people.
The real solution is for technology experts on both sides to come up with a way to deter it. It will never be completely erased... and the average person isn't even smart enough to use all the tools currently available... but giving everyone the ability to just log on to a p2p program and download whatever they want instead of buying it will lead to a bankrupt industry for music and movies.
I don't know about you but most of my favorite movies weren't made in someones garage with a new mac. It's nice when people do that... but no I don't want to see professional art disappear in favor of someones amateur attempts.
I feel that both GE's weak attempt at politically influencing a delay in the inevitable transition to CFL's and the spin on this 'story' by slashdot staff; are more about greed and desperation then anything else. CFL's use way less energy, last longer, and are just plain better all around; from almost every perspective..... people nowadays just aren't careful, motivated, or smart enough to act on it.
Look, you may need to take a few hours some week and find out for yourself exactly what the deal is. Read, Interpret, Decide, Act RIDA, suka.
These prostitutes outta really get out there. Make some signs, do some marching, yell and scream. Get out there and join your Anti-GTA brothers in blue.
If all this anti-video game crap can bring prostitutes and cops together at least we will garner some entertainment out of it.
I smoke, drink, do drugs, use computers/internet, watch tv/movies, drink coffee, eat red meat and do a variety of other practices certain segments of american society deem "bad" or "wrong" or "evil" or whatever you want to call it. I call it freedom but thats another discussion.
What are my thoughts on addiction? The only activity of all those named(and some I might have missed) that I've personally found to be "addicting" are cigarettes. Though having briefly smoked herbal cigarettes in college when I was strapped for cash I found that far less addicting.
Legalize cannabis, keep beer free, eat red meat over McDonalds, and watch all the non-crap tv/movies you can find (firefly etc.) but god damnit make big tabacco stop putting all that shit in their cigs.
The bottom line is MMOGS have had a lot of time to grow up. Yet most of the games coming out are fairly a like. Their are small differences in content but the gameplay is the same. This is just going to be another attempt to maximize a franchises' profits a la Star Wars Galaxies and Star Trek Online by creating a game modelled after a successful convention show/movie with an instant userbase.
While some mmogs have done more of the same "very well" (world of warcraft comes to mind) it's still not next generation. MMOGs have been around for almost 10 years now...I mean seriously, Ultima Online still holds the place as best MMOG to date IMO...
That rant aside, I'm still not sure how MMOGs could go about being radically different. I mean until I see something truely next generation I'm not going to be all that excited as I would be towards something like, say.. Fallout 3. I've heard a lot of crap about permadeath "not working" but the bottom line is until a developer with balls comes along and tries we won't know and taking the easy way out to do more of the same is lame.
Yeah I thought Frequency and Ampltitude were both equally good though Amp did fix some annoyances.
I'm not a game developer so I don't know if it's unrealistic or not but I always thought it would be cool to have an Amplitude style game that could analyze any song and create a level based on it. My main beef was the limited soundtrack and also I liked Frequency because it focused more on Techno....Amplitude seemed more like a showcase for all kinds of genres and songs for the RIAA. Who needs stuff like Pink...
now all we need to do is build a giant ark, move the seeds in with every species on the planet.
"The NOAH 2000 is THE technological ark of the future!"
It's probably a good idea after the public controversy over "whats his name". On one hand no matter what changes are endorsed their will always be vandalists. I don't like to imagine the kind of people that get their kicks changing wiki articles but they are and always will be "out there". On the other hand it being free and open allows it to grow much faster than traditional methods. I suppose the trick is to find a balance of protections to deter vandalists as much as possible while leaving the foundation of wiki alone.
Allowing only registered members to edit articles is a good policy. As is disallowing or requiring special considerations for editting pages that are common vandlist targets, like Michael Jackson.
Personally I think editting should take longer, even if all the information isn't required. I think if you had to fill out a form before making an edit it'd keep some vandal from swinging by and making abunch of changes across multiple articles. If they had to fill out abunch of crap they wouldn't bother. Those types tend to be lazy and not all of them are willing to fill out an extra page of info just to make a few potty humor changes. People that genuinely want to add an article or edit one probably won't mind filling out an extra page considering they just did some "work" editting the page.
Personally I think this case was seeded in racism. This is a classic of example of a big American company coming in to push a big Asian one around. Marvel obviously had no case to begin with but they thought "hey, here's a vaguely similiar part of a product put out by a big asian company our lawyers could target!!! lets take them to court!"
I think we should all take a moment and analyze a few of these responses:
Scott: So we gave our most loyal customers the ability to destroy everyone else in the game.
Thats a very angry statement. Where is all this deep rooted hatred coming from? Why must we be violent to each other just to have a good time. Terrible message and I'd be ashamed to promote such activities.
On a personal note I'm not surprised to hear something like this coming out of Scott "Lum the Mad" Jennings. It's just another MMOG scandal and another in a long list of recent controversies surronding SJ. The e3 Shadowbane vice bust when the California arrested the wolfpac gang for being the pimps that they are. Second hand reports claim SJ was standing naked next to two midget twin interns and a jr programmer named larry. Bending over and rubbing sour ketchup all over them.
Yet he has the nerve.... to say that gaming cafe's in Korea is bad. PFFFT. I'll tell you go find a picture of Scott Jennings then compare it to a photo of a cool slick yuppie korean gaming cafe and tell me who you'd trust.
when will they realize that people don't want to play games or watch tv on cell phones and that more importantly corporations don't want people losing productivity on company paid cellure time playing mario and the like.
I think it was brilliant of wikipedists to revise moral responsibility with that long boring drawn out sentence like this as when it keeps going maybe now i should stop.
Everyone will start reading that and get bored. Some will shoot themselves.
Well at least we can all sleep well knowing the "wikipedia hoax bandit" is caught...he won't be going around destroying wiki's anymore. Thats a great use of resources and tax money/sarcasm
I'm addicted to games, drinking & drugs, pornography, women, music, and playing with myself.
I do all of these activities almost everyday as part of my day to day schedule.
I find I'm a pretty happy person.
If thats bad,...i'm happy to be evil(tm.)
For once I'd like to see an article like this about something thats actually harmful. For example, say something that involves hurting other people and oneself (in a noticeable way, drugs/drinking/porn/etc. do not count in the least) like "being 'addicted' to beating up old people and taking their money." or "'addicted' to murdering people because they cut you off at the gas station".
Those are some "addictions" worth regulating and talking about.
On a side note by drugs I generally mean drugs we all know are harmful and outta be legal. I don't smoke or consume crack nor do I generally associate with such people. That being said I have meant two functioning crackheads. Both had good jobs and niether seemed to let crack overwhelming control their life. They definitely seemed to be in the habit of consuming it and I assume it'd be hard for them to break that habit. However I seriously question the whole idea of universal "addiction".
I really have a hard time envisioning the type of people who actually spend a Saturday night watching one of scifi's horrid B-Movies. I have never even given any of their movies a chance, it's hard enough to stomach the adverts they run during their few good shows.
"Snake Man" , "Shark Attack", "Mutant Alien Warriors", "Over Thrust: Ghosts on Board" etc. etc.
The fact that they've spent 21 million on that crap is just insane. They could have done any number of things with that money.... used it to fund great shows that had devoted followings or clumped it together to make bigger budget higher quality films once every 3 months instead of every saturday.
I would really like to see an HBO scifi based show and/or a subscription scifi channel that was forced to treat people intelligently as they would be the ones footing the bill.
Most of their stuff is just insulting to me as film lover and part time actor.
Considering these industries (movies/music) have screwed more people than any other known to man I can't help but not feel bad that the technology today allows us to collectively screw them out of some monies.:)
the problem with these types of measures is they don't take into account idle time (as in maybe going to the bathroom and leaving it on or pausing for some reason) and also I know from experiance playing 2 hours of a game when you are close to the end or completing an important part and then getting booted off would be discouraging at best.
Somebody already invented a car that was cheap and lasted a lot longer than conventional parts. He died broke when all the car companies lobbied against him because of the economic consequences.
Their was also a movie by Francis Ford Coppla about him with Jeff Bridges:
well it's not all they do heh ... but in terms of using the computer thats what they do... kids today are really dumb... they might be using their computer to write something... but most of the time it's movies and music.

As it stands now, it's just pathetic.
I smoke, drink, do drugs, use computers/internet, watch tv/movies, drink coffee, eat red meat and do a variety of other practices certain segments of american society deem "bad" or "wrong" or "evil" or whatever you want to call it. I call it freedom but thats another discussion.

no pun intended on comparing Scott Jennings (relation to Kenneth? the jeopardy wiz mormon?) to a building. *laughs evily*

just my two grams.
I love it when major corporations fight large battles against each other instead of the consumer. ...Oh wait.

leading the public to believe cannabis is bad.....it's inexcusable.
