According to http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/200405/04- 026E/, Sony has developed a optical head that can output 3 difference wavelengths. So, no, reading burned CDs/DVDs shouldn't be a problem, since the optical head will be able to use the 'native' wavelength of each format.
It's appropriate to put scare quotes around "free" software... but the same thing applies to "purchased" software. "free" isn't completely free, but neither is "purchased" completely paid for.
You obviously don't understand what the "Free" in "Free software" stands for. The "Free" stands for Freedom "Freedom", and not price. Free software is not always free in price, but it is always Free as in Freedom.
Care to post that config file? Zsh is sounding really cool. I would like to try it...

You can install things in your home directory. Honestly, why should we Bash users wait for everyone else? It's not like the writers of those scripts owed it to you to write them your way.
Yes. My favorite is GiFT which can connect to Gnutella, OpenFT, and FastTrack (if you want). It has some excellent front ends, Apollon being my favorite. There is also GTK-Gnutella, a good GTK Gnutella client. aMule is nice, too, though I think the client needs more work.
There's a ton of other Gnutella clients for Linux, and some are really quite good.
No. Bug 163767 simple warns that should there ever be a Windows exploit with the shell: protocol handler, Mozilla will be vulnerable. At the time there was no such Windows exploit, but even then they made it so that you would have to manually invoke the shell: protocol handler (by clicking a link). When an exploit in Windows was found, Mozilla finally decided to fix it for MS, by completely disabling shell:.
I have a better idea... how about we have no laws on copy protection? That way, they can have their copy protection, and we can crack it (faster than they can come up with copy protection, I might add) and distribute the cracks freely. There's no need for extra legslitation that removes rights from either the distributer or the owner.
You can do that easily with OpenOffice. Just type in your title, hit tab (just space won't work), then type in your name. Now all you have to do is select your name and hit the right-align button.
I've been curious about what the -mm patches actually do. I know that they introduce some experimental stuff into the kernel, but that's about all I could get from Google about them. Do they improve preformance? Implement new features?
Yes, Caps Lock is useless and annoying. Infact, I find it so annoying when I accidentally hit my Caps Lock that I added this to my xorg.conf (XF86Config for those still using XFree86):
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps"
There are quite a few other things you can do with your Caps Lock key in Xorg/XF86, just Google for them.
IMHO, it would be best for dun to dual license Java under the GPL and their own license (like Trolltech does to QT). That way Linux distros and KDE/GNOME can hav it their way, while Sun can still include it in Solaris and such.
Um, no. The US government never banned anything about the Iraqi war that they disagreed with. Here, the Chinese government is doing just that.
Oh, and IIRC the prisioners at Guantanamo are being treated in ways acceptable under that Geneva convention, which is a lot more than any sane person can say about the Chinese prisions.
Did you know that languages like English are constantly evolving and can be changed? If everybody says virii as the plural of virus, then the plural of virus is virii, if you like it or not.
Just a heads-up, you may want to try Mandrake 10 (I'm not sure if it's at public mirriors yet, if not wait until it is). It has a new version of X, which IIRC does support Radeon cards.
"When they came for the communists, I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist. When they came for the Jews, I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. When they came for the Catholics. I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me... and there was no one left to speak up."
I'm sorry to say that a lot of the western world thinks of the East as backwards. Maybe it's American cockiness, but we like to think of ourselves as more advanced. It's nice to see that notion being chipped away. It's great remind people that we're all on this Pale Blue Dot together.
Maybe we think that the East is backwards because it is atleast patially true:
I don't know about the Arab world, but here in egypt it is basically true we are very much backwards.

A tip for you: use Google to confirm something you think is correct.
Usually people who's cars are that dirty are more worried about all those big rust holes than a little scratch in the paint...

Yeah, because the first time you cheat everybody instantly knows about it...

Personally, I would hope the (American, at least) schools work on teaching math, english, and science properly first.
Or you can just use sha1sum(1)...

You exemplify this type this quote was aimed at:
"When they came for the communists,
I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist.
When they came for the Jews,
I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
When they came for the Catholics.
I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me...
and there was no one left to speak up."

Winamp 3 did have the media library, and Winamp 3 is older than iTunes.
We already do. It's called XviD.
Because the world does not revolve around Mac OSX users.
