It's not that we are smarter, it's that we treat ourselves better. We don't put up with the same level of shit that windows users put up with, and that probably extends to efficiency in other areas of our lives.
If we could put Big Brother cameras on Bush and Cheny 24 hours a day, I would be much more comfortable with being watched myself. It's worth it to put the spotlight on those with the power to really cause trouble.
AppleCare is the one extended warranty that is ALWAYS worth it. Seriously. I'm not an apple emloyee, just a fanatic. Who has bought 3 machines with AppleCare, and each time saved at least twice the AC cost in repairs. Things like getting my powerbook's HD replaced because later models were much quieter. Getting 85% of the machine replaced two years into owning it due mainly to a dim screen and some power issues. With a little creative timing of repair requests, AppleCare is an AWESOME deal.
dude, stand up for yourself. i mean, outside of slashdot. you are supposed to have a partnership in a marriage, if you feel stepped upon (the way you describe it, that appears to be the case), speak up and get it out in the open and deal with it.
I'm going to give this _one_ try and vote democrat despite my being a lifelong libertarian. Every other election I've supported the Libs. But this fuckhead needs to get out of the white house at ANY cost, including my idealistic views of what voting is for. Please vote anti-bush (i.e. Kerry) for the sake of the future of humanity. I may be wrong about this, and I realize 3rd partys need support more than the dems, but the dems suck a lot less ass than the current regime. Think about how bad things could get if bush acts like himself for the next four years.. with him knowing that this time, he actually got elected. He could easily declare all 3rd parties to be terrorist orgs or some other kind of crap. BTW, if you want to get people to vote for Aaron Russo, why not give a reason?

Seriously, MJ is the best cure for laziness that I've ever tried. Just realize that set/setting matter. If you expect it not to work, it won't. But if you genuinely desire to get a lot done, and try it, in _small_ doses, you just may find things much easier to get a handle on both intellectually and emotionally. I have ADD, I have medication for it, and what I'm prescribed doesn't hold a candle to it, and is much worse in terms of wear and tear on the body.
Seriously. If I have to pay $17 for an album I have to share it just to justify the cost. I'm not much of a music downloader, but shit like this makes me resolved to become one.
So I'm an American who also has noticed these problems. And I also strongly object to the political climate here. I want to go somewhere better, where intelligence, research, and science are promoted and respected, rather than being bashed over the head with consumerism at every turn. Any recommendations on where to go? Please explain your answers, I can't exactly try out each suggestion. And btw, I can't afford to move for probably a couple of years. But I'm anxious to start planning it out. If America feels it must act like it is (electing morons, attacking helpless countries for resources, bullying the UN, ignoring treaties and the internat'l court, censoring tv and radio, declaring endless war on undefeatable concepts such as drugs and terrorism, etc..), where is a good, sane place to go?
America is not a very nice country these days. I grew up here, and I can't fathom the idea of staying and living here as long as a third of my salary is going to a government that seems bent on world domination and coercion of militarily weaker states. I am ashamed of where my tax dollars go, thus I feel morally compelled to leave. I am NOT the only one. Imagine how non-natives must feel!
It's about time a mainstream site give some props to a business which, although offensive to some (in my experience, a small minority), are in my opinion at least, damn cool and deserving of more credit (especially considering it makes more money than industry x and y combined | x and y varying widely). This link turns out to be a decent portal site in and of itself. I don't know how it compares to it's competitors, I don't have time to do a study or anything, but I'm glad to see porn going more mainstream. If it were offensive to as many people as the news seems to imply, I don't think it would be making as much money as it is, tending to use the newest technologies first, etc.. This is a moment in history which frankly rocks. Long live Lycos.
BTW, I am not in the porn business nor a shill for them. I'm a fan who is damn sick of the prejudice I see in most of [american] media. They appear to be disproportionately influenced / controlled by a bunch of rather arrogant religious groups who act like porn is some huge evil destroyer of souls. If they can't handle it, they should avoid it. But many people can, and enjoy it, and there is nothing wrong with those people.
Trust me, this is not what we want to be doing. Next thing you know some guy will be firing this thing through a system of lenses at your house and popping enough popcorn inside it to break all the windows and destroy the foundation. You'll end up being pushed out the door by an ocean of popcorn. And you HATE popcorn!
OMG this is so stupid. How fucking hard can it be to make a distributed database and client software to increment a couple hundred variables? You don't see these kind of problems with web polls. Sure there are different candidates in different elections, but if you split the problem along the lines of particular races, other than the shiny happy interface to use a snazzy hi-tech touch screen to touch the face of your fav candidate, it really comes down to a VERY simple database call to increment a count for each candidate. I could do this whole system with one single database table for results.
Seriously, I could put together a system to increment a couple hundred variables in non-realtime over a weekend reliably enough to stake my life on it's accuracy. Most of us could.
The classic example of stable, solid transactions would be the ATM machine. Maybe if some of the rocket scientists at Diebold would talk to someone who had actually worked on an ATM machine they would know how addition works in computers, even across globally distributes databases, and learn how to do things like paper receipts, reliable atomic transactions...
I had the same signal strength until I read this comment thread, and I kid you not, I lost 25% strength the moment I finished the page. How could it know? Oh wait, it's back up to full now. No, now it's back to 75%. BEWARE.

Seriously, who makes up these retarded names for MS operating systems? A password generator concatenating two random words? You would think at least one person would be reviewing them before announcing them publicallly. At least Apple can have a consistent series of Big Cat names that sound somewhat cool. I can't wait to see what comes after Blackcomb.. My suggestions (MS, contact me for licensing details):

Sorry to break the news to you, but porn does not hurt kids.
Actually the best game I have for my PS2 __is__ a PS1 game: Nitrous Oxide. It beats anything I've seen for ps2. I wish they'd remake it.
uh, you do know that this LED waving phone has a camera, don't you?

if you want respect, act respectably.
I didn't think it was legal to single out particular companies for laws to apply to.. it shouldn't be, at least.
Dude, you sound like me every other election.

Brilliant!
But how can anyone work on it if the project lead is an AC?
Good post. I totally agree.

Legally elected? No. Try again.

you can't export what you don't have.
So add a paper trail, dude. That's _why_ it's open source.
