While you bring up an important point there is also another point - that of DNS. If you have a server called "internal" that you can acces anywhere on your network by using that name you have a DNS server running someplace (or a hosts file) on the machines in question. You are going to be able to override the rest of the internet if you do this BUT now these websites will be inaccessible from your own private network since they direct to someplace else.

So though you are right this will cause problems it will be more from trying to reach the websites, not with trying to reach an internal site. So while I am against this because it is going to cause a lot of problems the breaking on intranets is not as big of a deal.

While it is true you can save some money by purchasing used textbooks they are always changing around the texts so you have to purchase a new version of that $200 book. That being said I would like to see you just try and read one page from a textbook on that little screen, it would take forever as you have to scroll every other sentence. It would also be pretty hard to display any pictures or diagrams, especially those that require color. Laptops are pretty common at most colleges today and with the cost of textbooks if they did start moving to all online textbooks you might as well just use your laptop and save your eyes!

I am all for little devices running linux but I do not see this exact device being used for anything like textbooks. With a lot schools (high school and college) implementing WIFI it will however be a great distraction from what is being taught...

Firewalls are still important in the entire security model. I do a lot of working on shared servers that host websites and have found a firewall can stop a lot of headaches. When some users script gets compromised and a script kiddies goes to send out a DOS of some sort the firewall can block it. I have found that the firewall is more important for exgress monitoring for this type of market but it is very valuable.

While it is true people have the wrong image of a firewall they are still very useful when used correctly. Security is not just a single thing you do to a system but many different layers and the firewall plays into that field. It is also a lot easier to just block some script kiddie at a firewall if they keep trying to brute force a server. I think I am going to keep my firewall for a little longer :)

In todays world it is just one more tool that can be added to the computer security arsenal. Hell it would not even be a bad back door to your own box. SCO might already have alot of money but if they keep getting payoffs like that they will be able to go after anybody. I wish ev1 had not done this. That being said it was a business decision and we all have to trust that HS made the correct decision. In the past he has broken many barriers and helped bring down the prices in the dedicated server market, he has to be doing something correct as they finish the new datacenter tomorrow. So even though I am against it I can see that from a business standpoint they were doing it to just end the debate now and get it over with...while helping sue another poor company that will not have the resources that ev1 has. The root of the matter is the legal system, such friviolus lawsuits need to just get thrown out. Germany just stopped SCO from doing anything else in their country, now we just need to do that here. That is why today you are not allowed to turn on anything electronic until ~10 minutes after take off and have to turn it off before landing...the pilots want to be able to use the instruments. I have heard stories of how some instruments have screwed up during landing but nobody has ever confirmed what caused it, the pilots have enough backup instruments its not a big deal. They might as well prevent it though since its simple enough to tell everybody to turn all the electronics off.
