I cannot remember who said that the greatest threat to freedom is a contented slave.
My hope is that Microsoft manage to really nail product activation for both Vista and Office. Too many people pirate their shackles rather than pay for them. Millions of new users be a shot in the arm for Linux, BSD etc.
This is an actual case which was explained to me in some detail by someone who was quite convinced he had beaten the system
a) require you to use numbers only for your ATM PIN
Have a "numbers only" card.
1234
b) require you to use no special symbols (I wince in pain every time I see this one)
Have a "letters and numbers only" card.
Password1
c) REQUIRE you to have at least one number, or one upper + one lower case, or one symbol (not every string in the table above has a number, or a symbol, etc)
Password1
Pick a good keyword.:-)
Password1
And where a cunning designer insists on a special character he uses Password1+
He continued to explain how his bank insists on a monthly change of password and that they store the last three to make sure that you do not just rotate them. At the end of the month he changes it to Password2, then Password3 then Password4 and back to Password1
There is no security system that I have seen that cannot be broken by stupitdity.
if I remember right, amazon has been doing the same thing too for quite some time.
And I guess that Amazon will be next on their hit list. Lawsuits nowadays seem to be less about righting an injustice than harrassing a target with deep pockets. Settling for a few tens of millions is an attractive proposition compared with spending years fighting and winning a suit.
They would never bother to sue me!
I could probably hack my car to get better fuel economy and more power, but turn it into something that emits a lot more NOx and CO2. I own the vehicle (it's actually paid for, a 2002 model). Should I have the right to do this? I cannot say that I have an answer to that.
THere should be no problem with that, play away to your heart's content. The end result may or may not be legal to use on the roads, may not comply with your insurance policy and may not be safe. That is all besides the point - you should have the right to play around with what you have bought.
Need? Want? In the modern style you use them interchangeably. I suspect that what you mean is that people will buy a Mac even if they do not need one. Want is the motivation and that is manipulated by marketing and the Masters of Fashion.
The BBC use Macs not Windows. This would be obvious to anyone who ever watched the TV news where the newscasters each have an iBook in front of them. The Apple log is blanked out of course - no advertising.
Do you mean a telephone? I am one of the few around here old enough to remember Maxwell Smart the TV detective. The CIA were obviously fans. http://www.cia.gov/spy_fi/item15.html
On second thoughts it might look a bit obvious these days - a mobile phone is less noticeable than a shoe!
I suppose I should expect any comment the slightest bit critical of Apple to be modded as flamebait but this is a serious point. I could plug in a mouse but I work with a laptop on my knees a lot of the time and an external mouse is not an option for me.
The control button is better that nothing but I often have another use for my other hand hand: holding coffee, a pencil, paperwork, picking my nose... and I have not even mentioned watching pr0n!
It may be hard to accept but Apple does not have a 100% record when it comes to design and ergonomics.
Now mod me down again, I can take it.
I have the money and I am ready to buy a Power Mac - but first Apple will have to give me at least one more mouse button. And don't tell me to plug an external mouse into a laptop!
Are you including the time to load (Open) Office?
Why must it be either/or? When Oo is open I would do what you suggest. When it isn't I would use the command line.
Most Mac users could increase their productivity by learning to use a few commands and a few keyboard short cuts. Closed minds cling to the point and click solution to any problem.

Most people upgrade far too often. Unless they have specialist needs a PC should last at least 6 years - mine do.
I run a clamshell iBook, a AMD 750 and a Pentium 400 and have no plans to replace any of them. Plenty of memory and a minimum of bloat helps.

What sucks even more is that until we can exceed the speed of light the police speed cameras are still going to catch us :)
Queen: What is this iPod thingy?
Courtier: It is a device that allows you to hear your favorite music whenver you want.
Queen: You mean something like a military band?
And if it does, do they have an infinite supply of typewriters?

This is a personal disaster, guys like you are going to be hunting me down and trying to steal my face.
Many of the policemen I have known think that they should have no interference from judges, juries, lawyers, politicians, citizens, constitutions, press or anyone else.
If you think I am exaggerating consider:
the death sqads in Brazil
London shoot to kill policy
Police brutality in the US
and the endless list Google can provide.
You mean SPAM is mad of rats legs?

... there is a definite kind of web/mob (wob?) mentality here. ...
I thought he meant sob

Of course they do support Windows users as well.

We tease you because we love you ... and are grateful that we are not you.
It is a well known fact that 58% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
Fireproof box? What is wrong with putting it in your freezer?
When you are in a hole just stop digging.

Thanks for that, I always thought that Darpa was Al Gore's middle name.
...is this a suprise? A mega-corporation trying to make money by expanding it's IP portfolio.
I thought it was the TCP/IP portfolio they are expanding.
woo whom!!
