>I can't help but think that we often help the wrong people
We probably do but but do you have a method of accurately identifying the ones who do deserve help? One of the problems is that people at the bottom fo the pile are often there because they consistently make bad decisions. Maybe your Big Issue vendor earns a fortune and can afford the shoes. Maybe he stole them? Maybe he was given them? Maybe he had £101 in the world and spent £100 on shoes. Who knows. I do know that this should not automatically prevent him from receiving help.
You may be correct but you are only talking about current technology. When you are dealing with the most sensitive data involving governments and the miilitary you have to be pretty sure that the data cannot be reconstructed in five or ten or even fifty years time. Some of the more extreme suggestions for destruction of disks do not seem so silly in that context.
so if SCO does not accept the GPL, isn't all the GPL'ed code they're using in this distro is being used illegally?
No. Fortunately it is not SCO who decides what is illegal. The question is no more logical than asking if, because you do not accept the Microsoft licence it is not illegal to pirate it
Inconsistent, illogical, farcical and pathetic: yes. Illegal no.
I would guess that whoever moderated this post as a troll is one of the persistent Wikipedia vandals the poster is talking about. It is a perfectly legitimate opinion, on topic and relevant.
Maybe if the geeks brushed up on their social skills and personal grooming more women might apply. But I suppose that is part of what makes them geeks:)
Adobe Reader 7.0 is much faster than Adobe Reader 6.0.x, so if you're using Windows 2000 or later, the first thing to try is upgrading to Adobe Reader 7.0.
Adobe Reader 6.0 can be dreadfully slow. You can speed it up by disabling unused Adobe Reader plugins. To do this, move all files and folders that are in the Adobe Reader plug_ins folder to the Adobe Reader optional folder, except for the following:
* eBook.api
* EWH32.api
* Search.api
It has been reported that without the additional plugins, Adobe Reader can start up in as little as 15% of the original startup time. If you need functionality provided by other plugins, simply copy them back from the optional folder to the plug_ins folder.
In addition, you can disable the splash screen and checking for updates in the Startup section of the Adobe Reader Preferences.
1. boot off install dvd...if you have a DVD-ROM. Of course, where do you get the install DVD? One doesn't exactly find Linux on store shelves most places.
I am not sure what most places around you are like but around here it is dead easy. Any decent newsagent will have a choice of Linux Magazines all with a free DVD; you will be spoiled for choice of distro. If the mag cover price is too much for you go to the Ubuntu web page and they will post you a CD free of charge. If that takes too long get in touch with your nearest Linux User Group. Someone will give you a disc and will probably offer to help you install it.

This whole thread seems to be based on the assumption that everything just works under Windows and every Granny can go into a store, pick up a new computer and be up and running without a care in the world. Anyone who has ever worked on a help desk will know how painfully hard so many people make it. Having set the bar at that height they demand that Linux clears it.
Using a computer is a skill that needs to be learned, developed and practiced. Most people do not do that and struggle on the half dozen tasks that they do repetitively. They then turn white at the thought of throwing away half of their scanty knowledge and having to learn something new.
The plain truth is that neither linux, Windows nor OS X are very easy for a beginner to use without help or study. Given that help Linux is no harder than Windows. Microsoft is way in front of the game as its product usually comes preinstalled. Until that changes (unlikely) people will bitterly resist switching.
The joke is funny but not really accurate. In some societies you have no right to free speech. A posting on/. may be modded down but still be available to be read. Sometimes there is confusion between the right to speak and the right not to listen. They can co-exist without any contradiction.
And as for modding down: my Reason Modifier is set at +3 for trolls and flamebait. I would hate to miss some fo the funniest posts.
Some people will never get it, they don't want to. Of course you can redistribute the source code . That is the whole point.
Instead of thinking that it is madness and could never work they should try looking at some of the many large open source projects and work out why they are so successful. Start with Apache, Samba and Perl then take3 a look at IBM and Sun.

When Windows is unstable, 99% of the time it's either because the hardware and/or drivers are crap (causing BSODs) or lack of basic maintenance (regular defrags, etc.)....snipped....
I have 3 machines that run 24/7, cuz otherwise I'd spend the whole day turning 'em on and off. Ouch!
It is a while since I used Windows but I seem to remember that you had to reboot to run defrag and scandisk on the windir. Which makes me wonder how your can run 24/7 and do your basic maintenance.
Insightful? He makes vague assertions as though they were fact that bear no examination at all
The worst thing is that we will never know what actually happened, what this guy did, how he did it, why he did it..
We may not know why he did anything but the charges (discussed in this thread) specify what and the trial will examine the detail and method.
There will not be a trial, the guy will be shipped off to some godforsaken place and be held forever under who knows what kinds of aweful conditions getting regular "pressure" from the CIA or the egyptian intelligence or whatever.
Nonsense. There have been worrying reductions in human rights and liberties under the Blair government but the British legal system is still operative. It is possible that parts of the trial could be held behind close doors to protect national security but, if the Director of Public Prosecutions thinks that there is a good case the trial will proceed as normal. If not he will be released.
I know two people who have no favorites and never use the address line. If they want to go to example.com they click the icon for their home page to arrive at MSN and then search for "example.com" and then click on the result. They even bring up Google this way.
I have told them how to do it better, shown them, nagged them and every time I do a little shoulder surfing I see them up to their old habits. They are not stupid but sometimes they dont think very much:)
However, I suspect what's happening here is that the exhibit curators are trying desperately to remind people that now-Muslim peoples are not just terrorist monsters.
I might be more persuaded by those curators if they could have come with a few examples of Islamic discovery and invention that were less than a thousand years old. The civilisation has a strong whiff of decay.
It must be said that I only looked at the top 20 listed by the Independent articl.

Well, if eating your own boogers is so good for you, just imagine how much better it would be to eat other people's.
> If they could do all this in 50 megs, imagine what they could do in more space.
The OP seems to have missed the whole point of DSL. There are plenty of other choices of distro if you take away the size limit.
> They are getting paid very little in comparison to bloated unionized factories How long can China carry on like this without a communist revolution?
Stop driving my car? Heck, now that my sight is failing it is one of the few pleasures left.

I doubt there are many world leaders you could get a meeting with in less than two weeks.
:)
Bet you could get a meeting with RMS in less than two weeks
Getting rid of all the plugins that you do not use will make it load very quickly indeed. Below I paste from http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/acroread.html

Are Symantec doing Microsoft a favour so that they have a really good excuse for the next postponement of Vista?
