Charter does this too.. It's standard practice lately for cable providers. It makes them look better and it helps out the end user by allowing them to "burst" small amounts of data (like websites). This is a function of traffic shaping, I dont see any harm in it.
Just test your connection speed with real world application instead of these speedtest sites. You will get a lot better picture of how fast and "stable" your clients connection is if you download a 100mb file from an ftp site and then put it back up there. You will be able to see how much jitter they have in their connection and work out an average speed.
Hold on a second, There are some threads of truth here...
Yes commercial level support is not freely available for Free versions of linux, But neither is it available for Windows. If you need Microsoft to fix a problem for you it will cost $250.00 if memory serves. Now this is a good price but it does cost you something.
If you expect commercial level support you need to pay for it no if ands or anything else of that nature, The support staff and infrastructure needs to be paid for, do you expect people to work for free?
Also in this particular situation we are talking about linux as a server not as a desktop solution. Linux is a GREAT server solution especially in conjunction with oracle as a database system. Apache for windows always has been iffy at best, it runs OK but it's still a UNIX based web server project ported over to windows "just for fun". It is not intended to run any mission critical operations (that is just a catastrophe waiting to happen).
I think the fault here has to lie with the application vendor (dc stars?). In the end it's normally the application vendor that says "our software will work in an x+x+x environment and we support it as a whole. I don't know if that is what happened here but if the "chief accountability officer" didn't make sure the solution being provided worked properly and for that matter worked properly in their environment then this is a non issue, Off with whoever signed the contracts head, poof done..
Just get yourself one of those ultra fast AMD servers and put exchange on it with a 1,000,000 user license. I have been told by countless AMD fans that the new AMD processor is XX times faster than anything on the planet.
I think 1 server will do it for you, but you might want to raid the server just in case!
I just talked to them on the phone, Great staff very helpfull with all the bits that go together to make the whole solution work, Thanks for the info I was having trouble finding it myself.
I am currently looking for a way to project a movie onto glass for a retail store.
Anyone got a good solution that flips / reverses the image to it looks correct from the outside?
How does project on glass work do you tint the glass of put some type of special film on it?
Let the Terra Forming begin, what is the idea behind this? Are the plants going to release oxygen?
I 'm curious about this but I know nothing about the subject someone please enlighten me.
That is just absurd. Your saying that if people cannot write their own CMS they shouldn't have a website? Some people spend less than 6 hours a day in front of a computer, does that entitle them to anything less on the internet?
Just Fricken great, Were all going to DIE now because we knocked the comet off course and it's going to hit some planet inhabited with aliens..
You see the aliens were ignoring us, because until we pulled this stunt we were only destroying our own planet. But now we have become a threat and WERE ALL GOING TO DIE!
They are coming for us with their death rays and their biological weapons. There Is no place to hide and it's all NASA's fault.
If you need me I will be in my home made fallout shelter for the next 50 years.
So my Datacenter has started offering Windows 2003 dedicated server for application / web hosting. This scares the hell out of me.
Why? Because my datacenter may now sucome to the many many insecurities associated with windows.
This is a problem that has been discussed on many dedicated hosting forums. Here's my stand.
I don't want servers that are prone to security / infection issues adminstered by people who need a point and click interface because they don't read manuals and will most likely not administer their boxes properly destroying the network that is currently in place.
Datacenter's normally do not offer hardware firewalls thus an attack like msblast will most likely completely infect almost every windows machine on this network slowing everything to a crawl.
This is an issue for the Whole Internet! Datacenters like this normal issue up to 65gb's of bandwidth. Imagine 500 machines on this network attacking some point on the internet due to a worm/trojan/virus!
I'm looking for input, I'm not trying to say people should not use Windows 2003 servers. I am worried about the issues I have stated and wonder how the/. community feels about it.
It's ok, Yes they did...
I have thought about this and if that's what it takes to get people to the site to learn about adrian that's fine by me!
It's about Adrian, not my ego
The whole reason we have Robots is because the military wants robots that kill people!!
AIBO the honda robot is really a Stealth assasin between the hr's of 2200 hrs and 0600, and a media icon in the downtime..
If I were subject to an attack like this I would gather all information possible and Force my isp's hand by posting any and everything on Sites like Slahsdot, security focus, dtnn.net, dslreports.com..
Once you ISP finds out about this you can bet they will take care of it and try to prevent it from tarnishing their reputation in the future by actually fixing the problem..
But how would your ISP find out about this? SIMPLE! call up the tech support desk and tell them you saw this post about their service on all mentioned websites and are worried about the security of your own personal computer..

Michael's Minute: How to Buy Microsoft Windows XP for $50
After my expose piece on Microsoft last week, I promised one reader that I wouldn't write about Microsoft again for awhile. Unfortunately, I think I have to break my promise and here's why: As I've written about previously, the real key to desktop Linux gaining momentum is to get retailers to sell computers with Linux preinstalled. Sure, some people are smart enough to download software from our web servers then burn a CD and install it, but the majority of people want to buy a computer, plug it in and have it ready to go. Getting Linux computers onto store shelves sounds easy -- what store wouldn't want to stock computers for $200-300? (I just bought a computer for $249 and upgraded the RAM from 128MBs to 256MBs for 30 bucks and it is a solid little performer!) Consumers really want affordable computers and any retailer who stocks them sells large quantities of them. It seems like it would be an easy decision, right?
There's one additional dynamic that comes into the equation - Microsoft's money to discourage retailers who start selling large numbers of LindowsOS computers. Microsoft routinely offers financial inducements to computer companies to not carry LindowsOS computers. With $40 billion in the bank, it's an easy decision for them to use a few million dollars to block Lindows.com from major retailers. Every month that Microsoft keeps their monopoly position, it is another billion or so in profit. You've probably heard rumors of such behavior in the past and maybe you're skeptical because the tales are, not surprisingly, light on facts. So allow me to give you the facts from one such retailer to convince you.
LindowsOS computers have been available from TigerDirect, a popular mail order technology business, run by a savvy CEO, Gilbert Fiorentino. After selling thousands of LindowsOS computers in the last few months, TigerDirect describes their experience with LindowsOS in their most recent catalog, saying they have found it to be "faster, leaner, and more stable than Microsoft Windows," mentioning how "...LindowsOS never crashed, even in extreme testing situations," and then go on to say that they are "more enthusiastic about the LindowsOS than ever."
We've met with TigerDirect in the past and they've remarked what great sellers the LindowsOS computers have been for them and how they were surprised at the demand for Microsoft alternatives. However, at these same meetings, they talked to us about e-mails and phone calls from Microsoft attempting to bribe them to stop selling LindowsOS computers.
While TigerDirect has resisted Microsoft's pressures in the past, recently Microsoft has stepped up orders to their staffers to increase the financial incentives to impede LindowsOS sales at TigerDirect. At some point, Microsoft's monetary inducements become so large that it makes economic sense for just about any retailer to abandon LindowsOS - no matter how many computers they might be selling. TigerDirect is in the business to make a profit and if Microsoft will guarantee them a profit, nobody can begrudge them for taking it.
Microsoft's latest offers to TigerDirect are extremely lucrative and I wouldn't be surprised if they ultimately cave to Microsoft's pocketbook. Microsoft is giving TigerDirect unheard of discounts on Microsoft software, allowing them to sell Microsoft Windows XP for just $50 to all of their customers who have purchased LindowsOS computers. TigerDirect is paying less for some copies of Microsoft Windows XP than even the largest Microsoft customers like Dell. Besides radically discounting their software, Microsoft is agreeing to spend a lot of marketing dollars to advertise their products through TigerDirect and more spe
Redhat's Site states >2 CPU's meaning Greater than 2 cpu's.. All linux's will support 2 cpu's but when you step up to an enterprise computing level consisting of servers with 4 cpu's or more then you need to go with Redhat's advanced server product.
It's effectivly the same thing as win2k Datacenter edition in terms of CPU support.
Windows 2000 server through advanced server support up to 2 cpu's.
In order to support more than 2 cpu's you need to use windows 2000 data center server.
It's the same Schema with redhat.
Redhat 7/8/9 support up to 2 cpu's.
In order to support more than 2 cpu's you need to use Redhat Advanced Server.

I'll buy that I was trying to remember as I was typing and figured my statement was good enough for the current thread..
yeah, sorry I should have said "Supported Configurations".
