Worked at a startup.com that thought it was going to make billions selling cult/foreign movies. My boss was a flaming 300lb male crossdresser who hired other 'developers' who barely knew front page. I was under pressure to make this amazingly creative super site while the Big Gay Al constantly changed his mind about what he wanted.. I had to be frisked before i went to my office because the rest of the employees often stole stuff (our office was above one of their video chains in nyc). And if things wernt working out, my boss would threaten to "fuck our asses.".
but it seems a little ridiculous to indict someone for pointing out a security hole. Exactly. What if the magazine Consumer Reports was reviewing their product and found this defect? Could the magazine then be indicted? How does this bode for private entities doing public reviews of a product?
Exactly!! This is what ive been telling people for years now! All we gotta do is start living in Walmart! They already got the optometrist, why not tack on some 'clean, well-lit' apartments? We wouldnt even have to walk, in this instant access shoppers paradise we could just motorize our Laz-E-Boys to roll our fat asses around in your bargain hunters paradise.
We NASA linux'ish employees had this in our inbox this morning:
On March 11, 2004, the NASA Records Officer notified Center Records Managers about a lawsuit filed by SCO Group, Inc, asserting the "enterprise" use of Linux (R) operating system violates SCO's intellectual property rights in Unix technology. If court rulings are favorable to the SCO, there may be subsequent claims against Government agencies.
Effective immediately, NASA is to preserve and prevent destruction of all records pertaining to the procurement and use of Linux (R) software per direction from the agency General Counsel and CIO. These records must be preserved until the NASA Headquarters, Office of General Counsel, lifts the destruction freeze.
We are asking each Directorate to review its technical and contract records and identify any that may be relevant to the subject litigation. A record is defined as papers, reports, photographs, or any documentation used to record the work of your office regardless of the physical form. Records can be created by your office and/or document an action, activity, or decision taken by your office. If records are discovered, you are requested to segregate them and immediately notify Ms. Patricia Southerland, the GSFC Records Manager, at extension 6-xxxx, or by email xxxxxx.
The big problem as i see it is in order to handle the boom boom 90s, schools made significant investments to expand their CS departments (I know my school did- new building, new proffs, new labs). Now that enrollment is down guess who pays for all this new bullshit? The students. Tuition will definatly rise to pay for this and anyone who knows academia knows that unlike a corporation, you cant just fire all the new proffs and retire your new facilities.

The only thing shown in this graph are people who rated there happiness as a "10 out of 10" according to the article. A graph/bellcurve of responses for each job would have been alot more useful. Of course pharmacists arnt going to say theyre amazingly happy with their position because well, they all probably want to eventually be practicing doctors/nurses and isnt that a bit better than working at rite aid? Even if they averaged 8 out of 10 on the happiness scale, they end up with few 10/10s and everyone assumes they hate their life.
Bah.. i hate badly presented statistics. Im always yelling at the radio/tv. Americans should have to take and pass a course in basic physics and statistics in order to be allowed a cable subscription.
Ahh but what about Fatshoe.com? where they had a listing of tons of ads, surveys, etc you could click on thru the site and the money would go right to a debit card you were issued. Amazing! Brilliant!.. well.. apparently no one wanted to sit clicking around for an hour to total up $1.50. Long live the 90s!!! In any event they cleaned house by selling the software that allows the system to work.
Yea this is a New York Press article. For those outside NYC, the NYP isnt really a news paper as an entertaining collection of memoirs and other funny things by the writers with some minimal investigative reports around town about city officials. Most of the articles are things like "today i was riding to work and a homeless woman grabbed my laptop and pissed on it!" etc. I love the paper but this story is over its head I would expect before reading this.
First of all the study from Johns Hopkins which concluded the following:
"Ecstasy acts primarily on the serotonergic and dopaminergic neurons in the CNS, and appears to irreversably harm the former (documented pathologically in animal studies, and observationally in humans). "
was found to be total bullshit as the researchers accidentally used methanphetamine instead of MDMA in the study. They themselves have issued a statement debunking their paper.
As a heads up, Prozac use often tags people with seratonin imbalances. Seratonin is in the MDMA equation and intensifies positive and negative effects of the drug on these people
Lastly, ecstacy tablets bought on the street are almost never ever pure and are often cut with speed, cocaine, heroin,DXM (this causes major overheating),drano or other nasties which are responsible for ER visits, imho.
God what an alien nightmare california is this doesnt suprise me.. i just got back from my first trip ever out there on business. I work for NASA and wanted to call in some astrobiologists to figure out the fauna of LA. Coming from the east coast, my justifications for quarantine and dissection include:
1: Theres a chain of smoothie places that sell "grass" health shakes. As in they cut the grass right there and blend it. Its fucking grass. I point this out and the girl said "no its Special Healthy Grass".
2: Due to some alien photosynthesis processing 'booths', the white females have darker skin than their latino counterparts.
3: Didnt they try to ban "master" and "slave" as computer hardware terms? I think they are trying to newspeak these words from the dictum over there so no one will know they are enslaved by some sunscreen botox composite antichrist.
Summary: If youre from the east coast, LA is like Worcester,MA/Newark,NJ/Arlington,VA with palm trees and grass drinking devil freaks. Beware.
Yeap back in 1987 i was the only 7 year old to have a 16bit arcade quality machine in my bedroom.. Nintendo? Pha.. pedestrians. Kids around the 'hood would line up just to bathe in its glory! I road the wave of triumph and was the object of fawning for miles and miles! Auugghh oh what happened!? come back! I have snacks! Free snacks for all! Ooohh lord who am i.. I am cold.. so cold..
Of course a whole heck of alot of military money goes directly to research which is not all "top secret" and we all benefit from. Like "the internet" (greatest social impact since Apollo?) for instance.
I think if they suddenly eliminated the military and we all owed 25% less tax, inflation would just suck most of that up and the other chunk would go into CEO bonuses and SCO funding.
Bah.. The whole 'im anti-establishment because i dont go to starbucks' is such horse shit. If you ever eat at Subway or Taco bell or you buy any product in a chain grocery store youre a total hypocrite. If local coffee has cheaper coffee thats good then theyre all set for the free market battle and more power to them.. if they think they can charge 4 dollars for a fucking cup of coffee but somehow 'deserve' your money more than starbucks than i got a present for them, a lifesize poster of myself with my balls dunked in a tasty cup of iced caramel mochiatto with a big thumbs up, smile and wink from yours truley.
I know this is slashdot and none of us will be satisfied until we can immerse our brains in media 24/7 while having an AI walk our bodies to and from our cars and work.. but honestly, i think you should all learn the value of sitting in silence and thinking for a few minutes a day without distraction. I know our society of advanced capitalism is pushing to cram entertainment into every femtosecond of our lives and eventually that plugging of holes will be complete, but seriously.. take a step back, and take some deep breaths and please do it often.. for the rest of us:)
Yea ive been trying to do the same.. someone should start a message board on tactics to get your wife/girlfriend into video games or other nerdy persuits.. I played simcity3k for awhile with my g/f where we would both plan the city but i would move the mouse until it was later revealed that she would just slyly say 'sure' to my suggestions and was just bored. D0h!.. but i bought her Uru (Myst 4) and she likes that.. puzzle games.. who woulda thought.
Yea this will be a marvel to the 3rd world. I tend to forget how totally blind i am without my contacts.. If i could not afford glasses/contacts, i would be easily considered incredibly handicapped and unable to take care of myself. It was that damn amiga 500 monitor that did me in when i was 7 years old!! i swear.
Yea i remember that kid. He dominated Joust, and when i was like 8 years old or something i played him. He said "they call me Master Blaster".. ahh still the funniest thing ever.
Agreed. First of all we have to realize this is america: if we dont spend the 500 billion on space, you think it will be spent on health care? gimme a break.
Second: This is a direct investment in americas technological dominance. On the Hill, thats how NASA is now justified to all the folks who really dont care about space. We sink 15 billion back into the US tech sector every year. Yes its welfare for the tech sector but I would argue that its the tech sector that now supports the US economy and its the best investment we can make. What do you all think will grow the US economy/markets in the coming years? Steel?? Corn?? Manufacturing? "Services"?? All those are on the out and "services" is simply not sustainable if you reflect on it for a moment. Technology people. Yea Yea its a 4-letter word right now but only because the las vegas that is wall street stopped rolling 7s.
Heheh yea i guess it must because at my school CE was def the hardest and aerospace was for frat boy meat heads who i always had to help with their math. (flame on):)
Well alot of huge engineering places will offer you up these massive starting salaries to entice fresh outs. However its often basically a ruse and you have no opportunity for advancment and your job security is questionable. I graduated with all my friends 2 years ago with a comp-eng/ee degree. They all started making 55k right off the bat at the big defense companies, woohoo. I started out at 45k in a much different place. (I went through ALOT of soul searching trying to decide what would be the better option). Now im making 55k and guess what, so are they. I have my next raise in promotion in site already and they are realizing now that their job sucks.
When youre in your interview, put the guys on the coals. What is the promotion potential? How long did it take you to get promoted mr interviewer? Don't settle for a one sentence answer like "you'll be rewarded down the road" because thats BS posturing. Get numbers. Get dates. Get specific accomplishments. The place that can give you those things is a good place to work, otherwise youre basically going to las vegas.
Yeap my friend graduated with a comp-eng degree and because the job market really isnt that good he ended up writing code at IBM. Job sucked and he was there for 2 years before quitting. Hit a brick wall looking for engineering degrees because employers regarded him as a coder. So he ended up taking another programming job.
Yeap my dad was a green beret in vietnam and he said they would do the same things to the viet-cong. They would manufacture up some perfect replicas of soviet military rounds, leave boxes of them here and their on the ho-chi-minh trail for them to find. Or they would sneak into the arms depots of the vietnamese and replace say one out of every 10 mortars with an explosive dummy so the VC would not trust their own ammo. Same with rifle rounds or whatever other potentially explosive equipment they could find.
